Aims. Mrk 421 was in its most active state around early 2010, which led to the highest TeV gamma-ray flux ever recorded from any active galactic nuclei (AGN). We aim to characterize the multiwavelength behavior during this exceptional year for Mrk 421, and evaluate whether it is consistent with the picture derived with data from other less exceptional years. Methods. We investigated the period from November 5, 2009, (MJD 55140) until July 3, 2010, (MJD 55380) with extensive coverage from very-high-energy (VHE;E > 100 GeV) gamma rays to radio with MAGIC, VERITAS, Fermi-LAT, RXTE, Swift, GASP-WEBT, VLBA, and a variety of additional optical and radio telescopes. We characterized the variability by deriving fractional variabilities as well as power spectral densities (PSDs). In addition, we investigated images of the jet taken with VLBA and the correlation behavior among different energy bands. Results. Mrk 421 was in widely different states of activity throughout the campaign, ranging from a low-emission state to its highest VHE flux ever recorded. We find the strongest variability in X-rays and VHE gamma rays, and PSDs compatible with power-law functions with indices around 1.5. We observe strong correlations between X-rays and VHE gamma rays at zero time lag with varying characteristics depending on the exact energy band. We also report a marginally significant (∼ 3σ) positive correlation between high-energy (HE;E > 100 MeV) gamma rays and the ultraviolet band. We detected marginally significant (∼ 3σ) correlations between the HE and VHE gamma rays, and between HE gamma rays and the X-ray, that disappear when the large flare in February 2010 is excluded from the correlation study, hence indicating the exceptionality of this flaring event in comparison with the rest of the campaign. Aluminum is one of the most abundant metals in the earth's crust. Although it shows no known biological function, it is recognized as an adjuvant in vaccines for human and veterinary uses. This study aims to evaluate the role of lifestyle and environment in the promotion of chronic disease. In it, we associated two factors: chronic exposure to aluminum and high-fat diets. Thus, we aimed to determine whether the association of long-term exposure to aluminum and high-fat diets affects the NTPDase and 5′-nucleotidase activities in the blood platelets and lymphocytes obtained from the mesenteric lymph nodes of young rats. In fact, the ectonucleotidase activities were shown to be upregulated upon exposure to aluminum plus high-fat diets. As a result, we can suggest that the progressive upregulation of ectonucleotidase activities that we observed could be controlling the extent of inflammation and immune response. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Local wisdom of Aek Latong society for mitigation and adaptation of soil movement disaster in North Sumatra, Indonesia

Lately, due to advance technology, some of natural disasters could be forecasted, therefore the people can decide where to go to avoid the disasters. However, people in Aek Latong North Sumatra did different thing. They just stayed in their villages or regions without moving to anticipate the impact that might happen. This research was aimed to identify the local wisdom of Aek Latong society in facing, mitigating, and adapting the disaster, especially soil movement disaster in their region. This research was conducted through 3 steps (preparation, main survey, and data analyses). At the first step (preparation) was conducted to get secondary data about Aek Latong, such as geographical position, natural condition, type of natural disaster, society and the tradition. The second step (main survey) was conducted by directly interviewing the people in Aek Latong how they face, mitigate, and adapt the disaster happening. The third step was data analyses. Based on data resulted, Aek Latong society has a strong belief inherited from their ancients that everything come from the almighty God, therefore they have to face it. They believe that God has specific purposes to do so for them, they do not have to easily give up. Then, they also mitigate and adapt the disaster by earlier checking the signs of disaster and following the advice given, besides they did not construct building and do farming activities in sloping area and in the river bank. It could be concluded that Aek Latong society was able to face, mitigate, and adapt to the natural disaster in their region by their belief, knowledge, as well as by following the advice given.

Drying was one of the primary processes in essential oil production. Time factor in drying affects both the content and chemical compositions of essential oils. This study aims to evaluate the influence of the drying time of kaffir lime leaves on the yield at room temperature and the major volatile compounds in the essential oils by observing day-to-day treatments. As a key odorants in essential oils, the quantity of citronellal was determined by Gas Chromatography (GC) using the standard compound. Based on the daily observation results, a long-time drying gave a significant effect on the yield and the major volatile compounds. The highest yield 1.26±0.07 % (w/w) was obtained on the fourth day, while the highest content of citronellal compounds, 87.58±0.33% was achieved on the fifth day of drying,. A prolonged drying time resulted in a negative effect on not only the quantity, but also the quality of essential oils. Accordingly, this study suggests that the drying technique at room temperature best lasts for four until five days to obtain the most favorable quality and quantity of essential oils.

Context. TOI-396 is an F6 V bright naked-eye star (V ≈ 6.4) orbited by three small (Rp ≈ 2 R) transiting planets discovered thanks to space-based photometry from two TESS sectors. The orbital periods of the two innermost planets, namely TOI-396 b and c, are close to the 5:3 commensurability (Pb ∼ 3.6 d and Pc ∼ 6.0 d), suggesting that the planets might be trapped in a mean motion resonance (MMR). Aims. To measure the masses of the three planets, refine their radii, and investigate whether planets b and c are in MMR, we carried out HARPS radial velocity (RV) observations of TOI-396 and retrieved archival high-precision transit photometry from four TESS sectors. Methods. We extracted the RVs via a skew-normal fit onto the HARPS cross-correlation functions and performed a Markov chain Monte Carlo joint analysis of the Doppler measurements and transit photometry while employing the breakpoint method to remove stellar activity from the RV time series. We also performed a transit timing variation (TTV) dynamical analysis of the system and simulated the temporal evolution of the TTV amplitudes of the three planets following an N-body numerical integration. Results. Our analysis confirms that the three planets have similar sizes (formula presented) and is thus in agreement with previous findings. However, our measurements are ∼ 1.4 times more precise thanks to the use of two additional TESS sectors. For the first time, we have determined the RV masses for TOI-396 b and d, finding them to be (formula presented), which implies bulk densities of(formula presented), respectively. Our results suggest a quite unusual system architecture, with the outermost planet being the densest. Based on a frequency analysis of the HARPS activity indicators and TESS light curves, we find the rotation period of the star to be Prot,★ = 6.7 ± 1.3 d, in agreement with the value predicted from log R′HK-based empirical relations. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) pose a growing global health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where limited surveillance capacity and under-resourced healthcare systems hinder timely detection and response. Migratory birds play a significant role in the transboundary spread of AIVs, yet data from key regions along migratory flyways remain sparse. To address these surveillance gaps, we conducted a study between December 2021 and February 2023 using fresh bird guano collected across 10 countries in the Global South. Here, we show that remote, uninhabited regions in previously unsampled areas harbor a high diversity of AIV strains, with H5N1 emerging as the most prevalent. Some of these H5N1 samples also carry mutations that may make them less responsive to the antiviral drug oseltamivir. Our findings documented the presence of AIVs in several underrepresented regions and highlighted critical transmission hotspots where viral evolution may be accelerating. These results underscore the urgent need for geographically targeted surveillance to detect emerging variants, inform public health interventions, and reduce the risk of zoonotic spillover.

Motivation Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R package (BioTIMEr) to facilitate use of the database. Main Types of Variables Included The database is composed of one main data table containing the abundance records and 11 metadata tables. The data are organised in a hierarchy of scales where 11,989,233 records are nested in 1,603,067 sample events, from 553,253 sampling locations, which are nested in 708 studies. A study is defined as a sampling methodology applied to an assemblage for a minimum of 2 years. Spatial Location and Grain Sampling locations in BioTIME are distributed across the planet, including marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms. Spatial grain size and extent vary across studies depending on sampling methodology. We recommend gridding of sampling locations into areas of consistent size. Time Period and Grain The earliest time series in BioTIME start in 1874, and the most recent records are from 2023. Temporal grain and duration vary across studies. We recommend doing sample-level rarefaction to ensure consistent sampling effort through time before calculating any diversity metric. Major Taxa and Level of Measurement The database includes any eukaryotic taxa, with a combined total of 56,400 taxa. Software Format csv and. SQL.

Context. Among the blazars whose emission has been detected up to very-high-energy (VHE;100 GeV 14 δD cm to the size of the emission region responsible for the γ-ray flare, δD being the relativistic Doppler factor of the region. During the 2020 high state, the average spectrum became harder in the HE γ-ray band compared to the low states. A similar behaviour has been observed in X rays. Conversely, during different activity periods, we find harder-when-brighter trends in X rays and a hint of softer-when-brighter trends at HE γ rays. Long-term HE γ-ray and optical correlation indicates the same emission regions dominate the radiative output in both ranges, whereas the evolution at 15 GHz shows no correlation with the fluxes at higher frequencies. We test one-zone and two-zone synchrotron-self-Compton models for describing the broad-band spectral energy distribution during the 2020 flaring state and investigate the self-consistency of the proposed scenario. The cryptic lifestyle of most fungi necessitates molecular identification of the guild in environmental *** the past decades,rapid development and affordability of molecular tools have tremendously improved insights of the fungal diversity in all ecosystems and ***,in spite of the progress of molecular methods,knowledge about functional properties of the fungal taxa is vague and interpretation of environmental studies in an ecologically meaningful manner remains *** order to facilitate functional assignments and ecological interpretation of environmental studies we introduce a user friendly traits and character database FungalTraits operating at genus and species hypothesis *** the information from previous efforts such as FUNGuild and FunFun together with involvement of expert knowledge,we reannotated 10,210 and 151 fungal and Stramenopila genera,*** resulted in a stand-alone spreadsheet dataset covering 17 lifestyle related traits of fungal and Stramenopila genera,designed for rapid functional assignments of environmental *** order to assign the trait states to fungal species hypotheses,the scientific community of experts manually categorised and assigned available trait information to 697,413 fungal ITS *** the basis of those sequences we were able to summarise trait and host information into 92,623 fungal species hypotheses at 1%dissimilarity threshold.
