Ship recycling at the end of its useful life presents significant environmental and health challenges due to the presence of hazardous materials, such as asbestos and synthetic vitreous fibers (SVFs). This study aimed to convert SVFs and asbestos into safe, reusable co-products by incorporating them into a glassy matrix. The materials were melted at 1200 °C for 1 h with utilization of niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) to lower fusion temperatures. Samples collected from an offshore vessel and platform being recycled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing the presence of SVFs but not asbestos. Seven types of glass were produced, with their non-crystalline, glassy nature confirmed by the presence of an amorphous halo in X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a glass transition observed in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These findings demonstrate the potential to transform hazardous waste into value-added products, advancing a circular economy in ship recycling operations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in Brazil are factors of great economic importance, for they represent employment for more than fifty six million people. When we consider the country's overall population of two hundred million inhabitants we can understand the magnitude of such economic segment, and it means that it is responsible for the sustainability of the employment structure. As in any economic activity, it depends on efficiency and that means specialized management, low costs, low waste, high competitiveness: these factors assure the sustainability of such enterprises in the market. Apart from these factors, which are internal to the management, there are external factors that influence the enterprises' performance, such as policies to foster development, financial cost, qualified work force, the tax burden, value of local currency weighted against foreign currencies, and other factors. Management compliant with this matrix of factors is dependent upon the managers' vision. This comprehension by the managers about the different internal and external factors that influence the enterprise shall define the organizational culture that will prevail in this type of enterprises. For this study, we have researched the vision of SME's managers as far as internal and external factors that influence the management of enterprises. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014.

The program Support Plan Restructuring and Expansion of Brazilian Federal Universities (REUNI) allowed the expansion of course offerings and the number of university students in Brazil. In this sense, the participation of the Federal University of Santa Catarina allowed the creation and installation of new campuses Araranguá, Curitibanos and Joinville in 2009. The engineering Center for Mobility (CEM), installed on campus in the city of Joinville, had based their design limitations related to infrastructure in Brazil. Mobility engineering is a field of knowledge that deals with the development of technical systems and vehicular transportation infrastructure whose function is to transport people, products and information. This is a qualitative study, with analysis of documents and searches the sites, papers. In Political Pedagogical Project are offered three cycles of knowledge, the first two years of basic training and disciplines of engineering, the second course of a year, with disciplines that enable specific skills, and the third two-year cycle and how engineers in seven specialties (Naval and Oceanic engineering, Aeronautics and Space, Automotive, Railway, Mechatronics;Traffic and logistics, and transportation infrastructure). The objective of this paper is to analyze the innovative aspects of the political pedagogical project of CEM/UFSC, one of the organization in cycles with the training of engineers at the end of the fifth year of study, and also allows an exit for intermediate students who do not most want to complete engineering, at the end of the second cycle. In this case they can apply for graduation Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Mobility emphasis on training: vehicular or transport. Thus formed technicians and engineers, these professionals in underserved areas and with strong impact on the country's development.

The University is considered as playing a relevant role in the local context, as well as collaborating for the regional development due to its plural character. The Federal Universities are formal institutions that follow specific rules and regulations and are present in all Brazilian states aiming at educating professionals to meet the country's needs. Although being country-wide organizations, their action is local. A Federal University may be considered as a driver for local and regional development. Additionally, the institution has innovative principles and follows them, as is the case of UFSC (Santa Catarina Federal University) campus in Joinville-SC/BR. The aim of this paper is to analyze the creation of the Inovaparq in the light of the Triple Helix (TH) since the implementation of the Mobility engineering Center at UFSC. To this end, we adopted a qualitative approach as a method, with bibliographical and documental research, being configured as a case study. As a result of this action, there are the establishment of an Technological Innovation Park in Joinville and Region (Inovaparq), two public notices and some companies that had already working at Inovaparq platforms. The success of the incubated companies in Inovaparq is also an important outcome of this venture.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology to support the Hoshin Kanri (HK) process taking into account the variance of senior managers’ perspective regarding the relationships among objectives, key performance indicators and continuous improvement (CI) projects. Design/methodology/approach: A four-step methodology incorporates the A3 report into the HK, whose deployment was weighted by the variability among managers’ perception about the importance of each decision. This methodology was applied in a market-leader Mexican auto parts manufacturing company that is undergoing a Lean Manufacturing (LM) implementation. Findings: The results indicate that the proposed methodology provides an easier approach to consolidate different perspectives and weight the importance of CI projects. Moreover, it minimizes the possibility of managerial conflicts or the influence of a determined senior manager on others’ opinions during the deployment and prioritization. Practical implications: This work may be of great interest to managers, consultants and professionals who deal with the implementation of LM and wish to prioritize the importance of CI projects within the perspective of HK. Originality/value: HK provides a systematic approach to integrate strategic management with daily routine management through an adequate deployment of organizational policies to all levels. However, companies usually struggle with several issues such as the style of senior managers and consensus establishment among different opinions, which emphasizes the relevance of the proposed methodology in this study. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate a proposal on product portfolio management for the development of new products in a textile company. The research methods address the application of real data from the studied company. This work is characterized both as conceptual and field-based research. It constructs a proposal based on existing theory and involves an empirical application of that proposal. By using the portfolio selection and prioritization proposal, the company was able to select new products for development in a structured way. As continuity for this work, the paper suggests the application of product selection and prioritization for other organizations. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Faced with a scenario where the growth of urban centers is increasing, the BRT system comes as a viable solution to this, enabling the development of functional bus corridors, serving to meet the demand of rapid shifts, especially in areas with high population density. However, to characterize as a system, it is necessary to measure their level of performance in the face of various aspects that are part of his characterization. For this, the article aims to study the main criteria influencers for the development of a performance measurement system for the BRT systems in Brazil, using for this the bibliographic research, technical manuals and expert opinion about the subject, focusing, at the end of this, to reveal these criteria, aiming at the future the elaboration of indicators to facilitate its performance evaluation.

The purpose of this article is to introduce the reference model architeture used in the development of a reference model for pharmaceutical Product Development Process. The model was created founded on renowned methods as Concurrent engineering, Stage Gates and Product Based Business. It was developed using legislation and information from interviews with professionals of Brazilian pharmaceutical companies and information from Project Management. This architeture supported the development of a reference model for the pharmaceutical PDP management, which is adjusted to the Brazilian companies' reality and demand. © 2007 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

This study proposes to identify and select indicators contributing to the evaluation of the levels of sustainability in the family agriculture production of castor beans in the state of Paraíba. To achieve these objectives, we used the Pressure-State-Impact-Response (PSIR) model, which describes the human activities, processes and standards that impact on sustainable development. The methodology was based on Descriptive and Exploratory research applied in a case study of an agricultural cooperative. The primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews with representatives of public organs and agriculturists. Based on the reality and the problems that affecting the production system, a total 47 indicators were set, classified and tailored to the specifics of the activity, considering the different dimensions of sustainability. The results showed that the indicators selected enabled the systemic analysis of agricultural activity, facilitating the identification of the positive and negative aspects that influence the productive sector, and also propose possible solutions and improvements to stimulating the local oleaginous production.

Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) with Variable Speed Limits (VSL) is a freeway traffic control method which aims to maximize throughput by regulating the mainstream flow upstream from a bottleneck. Recent studies in a macroscopic simulator have shown optimal and feedback MTFC potential to improve traffic conditions. In this paper, local feedback MTFC is applied in microscopic simulation for an on-ramp merge bottleneck. Traffic behavior reveals important aspects that had not been previously captured in macroscopic simulation. Mainly, the more realistic VSL application at specific points instead of along an entire freeway section produces a slower traffic response to speed limit changes. In addition, the nonlinear speed limit-flow relation observed in the microscopic model is more pronounced than what was observed at the macroscopic level. After appropriate modifications in the control law significant improvements in traffic conditions were obtained. © 2013 IEEE.
