There is a growing concern about food production, the rational use of energy, and the impacts caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions on transport systems. With this concern in mind, the objective of this paper is to discuss the economic and environmental performance of different combinations of cargo vehicles. To do so, we explored the flow of soybean from Mato Grosso state to the ports. The results show that the combination of the stump semi-trailer presented the best economic performance, while the combination of the 'rodotrem' semi-trailer presented the best environmental performance. Moreover, this work points out the importance of the quality of the highways on the economic and environmental performance of soybean transportation. © Interconnected Supply Chains in an Era of Innovation - Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, ILS 2020. Proposal of a Hotspot-based Approach to Identifying Social Impacts along the Product-Service Systems Life Cycle in the Early Design Phases

The potential for sustainability has been highlighted as one of the most important characteristics of product-service systems (PSS). Nevertheless, a PSS is not intrinsically sustainable. Methods and tools for PSS sustainability assessment should be developed to be integrated into the design process, especially in the early design phases, in order to conceive sustainable solutions. In addition, a PSS should be planned considering the three sustainability dimensions, from a life cycle perspective. However, PSS design and assessment considering the full life cycle is scarcely addressed in the literature, especially concerning the social dimension of sustainability. In this sense, this study proposes a streamlined life cycle assessment based approach to identify potential social impacts along the PSS life cycle that can be integrated into the early PSS design stages. The proposal is based on a hotspot analysis, which identifies where in the life cycle the most significant issues may occur. The proposal was developed in three main phases, anchored in both hotspots analysis and PSS literature. After developing it, 10 experts in PSS and sustainability assessed the proposal strengths and weakness. Some suggestions were offered by the researchers and improvements were introduced to the proposal regarding PSS life cycle phases and the social impact subcategories. The experts considered the hotspot analysis suitable to be applied in the early design stages when there is not much information yet regarding the system to conduct a complete life cycle assessment. The next step of this research is the proposal assessment by practitioners in industry. Further work will also integrate the environmental dimension of sustainability into the proposal.

Bicycle sharing systems (BSS) arise as a proposal to respond to the challenges of urban mobility as a healthy, efficient, and relatively inexpensive mean of transportation. Although these systems are widespread, BSS still present challenges for implementation. In this context, this paper aims to identify the barriers to implementation of this kind of product-service systems (PSS) and to analyze which ones most impacted the failure of two BSS. The main results demonstrate that resistance to change both by users and those involved with the project hinders BSS implementation. Besides involving several actors, the system needs an adequate projection of the demand and costs. Some alternatives are: the integration of stakeholders in the development of the solution and the promotion of policies for the diffusion of sharing systems and education to conscious consumption. The results could be used in future PSS implementations to support overcoming the barriers.

Public health problem is associated to eating habits, such as higher consumption of fast food and popular snakes. Excessive consumption of these foods can cause health problems such as obesity due to its high energy densities. These foods have become commonplace in world culture for their low price and the easy-to-eat foods mass production. It is known that fruits are essential in balanced diets and an important part of the nutrition strategies programs by contribute to a healthy life. Some works has shown a consumer's global trend demand for product and the life quality and between fresh food and healthy. The Brazil are the third in the word in fruit supply chain and one of the biggest problems facing is fruit loss. It is estimated that mean of fruits losses occurs in households. The present study aimed to determine Brazilian preference towards fruit and the Brazilian consumer behavior influence which might contribute to losses during consumption stage. We explored the literature and created a survey with 275 participants, 46% of men and 53% of women, to identify the perception of Brazilian consumers that may contribute to fruit loss. The results shown the consumer preferences in buying mature fruits is associated with habits and can contribute to food losses and waste, because according best practice to fruit preservation is recommended that the majority types of mellow fruits should be stored in refrigerator and some of them should be consume as soon as possible. © ILS 2018 - Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, Proceedings. Food Losses and wastes can become a major social and economic problem if not managed properly. Over the last decades, some research has focused on the waste and loss of fruits and vegetables due to the population growth, which makes essential to find out ways to reduce these wastes and losses. However, few studies dealt with the amount of fruit and vegetables that are wasted by consumers. The purpose of this study is to identify the main causes that affect the generation of wastes in household's consumer behavior. A structured survey was applied to 275 Brazilian consumers, where 53% were female and 47% male, restricted a region of Brazil to identify these causes. The results show that a high education level does not imply a low food waste. Moreover, it indicates that, despite the low volume waste by family, the sum of these wastes represents a huge volume affecting logistics and supply chain management, waste disposal areas and environmental pollution. © ILS 2018 - Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, Proceedings. The complexity of the challenges in the water sector means that innovative solutions are required. These solutions include not only new sustainable technologies for water treatment, but also complementary innovation in business models to support the adoption of these technologies in urban areas. This paper aims to explore the role of sustainable business models in supporting technological innovations such as decentralized approaches for water quality and quantity improvements in urban areas. The private sector involvement can be valuable in overcoming the barriers and challenges to implementation of those approaches as well as to achieve the sustainability. A case study of the product-service system as a sustainable business model in an emerging economy was conducted to deliver insights into the role of new ways of value proposition, value creation, and value capture in supporting innovative technologies in the water sector and in contributing to sustainability. The results demonstrated that consumers' acceptance, risk perception, and confidence in decentralized approaches can be improved with the support of business models through a close integration with customers. The close integration among the actors can also lead to better management of the system. Further research can focus on how different types of sustainable business models could contribute to supporting water technologies in urban areas and increase social acceptability. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Although several studies have discussed from various perspectives the market-change dynamics of consumption and how consumers impact them, only a few have looked at consumers who act as producers themselves and how they affect the market with their self-production practices. Using data from netnography, participant observation, introspection, and in-depth interviews, this study aims to understand the strategies used by the consumers of DIY (do-it-yourself) cosmetics, which affect the market dynamics and foster a specific market apart from mainstream. We identified three approaches: the strategies such consumers use to make their products;the sharing of consumption experiences;and the disclosure of these products and practices, thereby legitimating them. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

An audiogram is not sufficient to indicate cochlear dead regions. Aim: To investigate cochlear dead regions in sensorineural hearing loss subjects using the TEN test. Site: CEDALVI/ HRAC-USP-Bauru/Sao Paulo/Brazil, August 2003 to February 2004. Study Design: A contemporary cross-sectional cohort study. Material and Methods: The TEN test was applied in three groups: G1(5 women with pure-tone thresholds within normal limits);G2(4 women and 5 men with moderate sensorineural flat hearing loss);G3(19 women and 24 men with mild to severe sloping sensorineural hearing loss). Results: In the G1 group the TEN value required to eliminate the test tone was, on average, close to the absolute threshold for all frequencies. No dead regions were found in the ears tested in group G2. 76 ears were tested in group G3, and six showed no evidence of dead regions in the cochlea. Conclusions:The TEN test was an effective test to indicate a dead region in the cochlea of subjects with sloping sensorineural hearing loss. There is evidence that pure-tone detection is different for subjects with high frequency sensorineural hearing loss and flat hearing loss;we observed a significant difference between the masked threshold and the absolute threshold only in sloping hearing loss and not for flat hearing loss. The chloroplast (cp) is an essential organelle in higher plants. The genes of the plastome are well suited to infer phylogenetic relationships among taxa. In this study, we report the assembly of the cp genome ofArtocarpus altilisand its phylogeny among species from Moraceae family. The cp genome ofA. altiliswas 160,822 base pair (bp) in length, comprising one large single-copy region of 88,692 bp, one small single-copy region of 19,290 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,420 bp. A total of 113 different genes were predicted, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30tRNA genes, and fourrRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis of 19 species belonging to the Moraceae family confirmed the phylogenetic proximity of the genusArtocarpusandMorusand the genetic similarity ofA. camansiandA. altilis.

Saturated hydraulic conductivity (KSat) is a key soil attribute that influences hydrological processes at multiple scales. It is well known that KSat is difficult to measure in the field. Field KSat measurement requires time and expensive equipment, skilled labor, and due to the variability of KSat, many samples are required. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are powerful non-linear mathematical models that can estimate KSat from different soil and environmental input variables as well as using dimensionless variables generated using database resizing techniques via principal component analysis (PCA). Our main goal is to construct artificial neural network models for predicting KSat using soil and different land uses as input variables at a watershed scale. The study area is the Eller Creek watershed of about 0.7 km2 in southern Brazil, in which we established an experimental grid of 178 sampling points. Data of soil bulk density, total porosity, microporosity, macroporosity, soil organic carbon content, sand, silt and clay, and KSat were determined at each point in the 0-20 cm layer. A land-use map was derived from satellite images and used to identify the land use around each soil sampling point. PCA was applied to the original dataset and two selected PCs were included as input variables for ANN modeling. Our results suggest that PC inclusion as input parameters, collectively or individually, combined with the original data, increased the performance of the analyzed ANN models, when compared to similar models using only the original data and without PCs. The use of ANN models showed that the variation of KSat in the ECW watershed is not only associated with soil hydrological and environmental covariates, but also to PCs which are orthogonal linear recombinations that encapsulate the main sources of variation of the original datasets. © 2024, The Authors.
