Background: Scleroderma-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) is often observed in patients with systemic scleroderma (SSc) and its diagnosis contributes to early treatment decisions 1,2 . Objectives: The present study aims to automatically quantify SSc-ILD from high-resolution chest-computed tomography (HRCT) and to evaluate the association between interstitial lung disease (ILD) extension and lung function impairment. Methods: Ninety-four patients with SSc and 27 lung-healthy subjects matched for gender, weight, height, and age underwent HRCT, spirometry and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (DL CO ). SSc-ILD was determined as the tissue mass present between -500 and +100 Hounsfield Units normalized by the total lung tissue mass (TLM). Cut off was the highest value obtained in the control group (25% of TLM). All data are presented as mean and standard deviations (Table I). An ANOVA test followed by Bonferroni post-hoc correction was used for comparisons among groups. Results: From 94 patients with SSc, 64 were classified as having pulmonary involvement (SSc-ILD) and 30 as not having pulmonary involvement (SSc No-ILD). In SSc-ILD subjects, there was a significant reduction in forced vital capacity (FVC), carbon monoxide diffusion capacity (DL CO ) and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity normalized by alveolar ventilation (DL CO /A) when compared with SSc No-ILD and control group. During coagulation, blood changes from liquid to gel, and the clot viscoelastic properties continue modifying until fibrinolysis. Ultrasound (US) was used in this work to trace the time-changing shear modulus, μ, during plasma clotting, based on the vibration signature induced by an impulsive acoustic radiation force (iARF) on a sphere embedded in a plasma sample along its clotting process induced based on the aPTT (activated partial thromboplastin time) assay. An US push system transmitted bursts of US pulses (2.03 MHz, 1000 cycles and 1.25 Hz of pulse repetition frequency) to generate an iARF on the glass sphere (4.0 mm in diameter and density of 2500 kg/m3), which displacement was monitored by a 5.0 MHz US pulse-echo probing system. The relative delays between the rf-echo signals from the sphere yielded the signal representing the sphere damped oscillation that was fitted with a theoretical-model displacement function whose unknowns are the iARF amplitude and the medium μ and shear viscosity, η. The method was repeated five times and the time-changing mean μ was determined along 2100 s of the clotting process. During the first 15 s μ remained at 20 Pa and then varied rapidly until 60 s, at a rate of 1.9 Pa/s. Between 60 and 800 s, μ varied at a rate of 0.2 Pa/s. From 800 to 2100 s μ remained stable at about 280 Pa. The interval of fast changing μ corresponds to the fibrin formation period and comprehends the clotting time of 25s typically obtained with the aPTT assay for control plasma. © 2017 IEEE.

Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions’ effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior—several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors. © 2024 American Association for the Advancement of Science. Early diagnosis still represents the best approach in the prevention and control of breast cancer, the second most frequent form of cancer worldwide. In this context, mammography has been largely used as a major method for disease early detection, as it aids the early identification of calcification clusters that can be or can later become tumors. This paper discusses the use of Wavelet Transforms to help highlight calcification areas in combination with digital image morphological techniques for feature extraction from regions of interest in digital mammography. The results obtained in this work are being upgraded to a next step, which will use a MultiLayer Perceptron artificial neural network to classify calcifications according to the most applicable category in the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BIRADS). © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) applied to the teaching of breast anatomy and pathology, more specifically of the breast cancer, the type of cancer that kills more women in the world. This paper aims to elucidate the importance of using these systems, lift requirements for the development and designing of an architecture of ITS. Through resources and applications of Artificial Intelligence techniques this ITS has the capacity to acquire the profile of its user and define teaching methodologies to build interactive and dynamics environments, based including in the use of Virtual Reality. The architecture of this ITS consist on four modules: Tutor Module (Artificial Neural Network), Student Module (Expert System), Domain Module (Ontology) and Interface Module (Adaptive Hypermedia Systems). The use of this ITS provides a didactic help to students and health professionals to the understanding of the explanations and practical applications needed to this domain of knowledge. © Copyright IARIA, 2013.

The Promoting Cognitive Performance - ProDC system was created for serving like an instrument for therapeutic intervention by health professionals working with cognitive rehabilitation. The ProDC seeks to train cognitive functions by means of computer games with graded levels of difficulty. The target audiences are the elderly aged 60 or more who have a deficit cognitive impairment diagnosis. So, nine games have been implemented for therapeutic intervention. The ProDC is being evaluated in the Institution Long-Permanence in Distrito Federal, Brazil. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This article presents some topics that have been developed by the authors on the development of a model of posture and behavior control of a Active Transtibial Prosthesis, i.e., applied to individuals with amputation below the knee. It is intended to use a Neuro-Fuzzy ANN as the basis of this control. Specifically, we intend to use an FCMAC ANN Neuro-Fuzzy type. Such ANN has the ability of memorizing a region of operation and allow that for similar entries to those known in memory, know outputs may be generated. It is intended to show an early version of this work whose application was the modeling of the inverse kinematics of a leg in the sagittal plane. © Copyright IARIA, 2013.

AIM:To evaluate the potential use of colonoscopy and endoluminal ultrasonic biomicroscopy(eUBM)to track the progression of mouse colonic ***:Ten mice were treated with a single azoxy-methane intraperitoneal injection(week 1)followed by seven days of a dextran sulfate sodium treatment in their drinking water(week 2)to induce inflammationassociated colon *** was performed simultaneously with colonoscopy at weeks 13,17-20 and21.A 3.6-F diameter 40 MHz mini-probe catheter was used for eUBM *** ultrasound mini-probe catheter was inserted into the accessory channel of a pediatric flexible bronchofiberscope,allowing simultaneous acquisition of colonoscopic and eUBM *** image acquisition,the mice were anesthetized with isoflurane and kept in a supine position over a stainless steel heated surgical waterbed at 37℃.Both eUBM and colonoscopic images were captured and stored when a lesion was detected by colonoscopy or when the eUBM image revealed a modified colon wall *** the procedure,the colon was irrigated with water that was injected through a flush port on the mini-probe catheter and that acted as the ultrasound coupling medium between the transducer and the colon *** the acquisition of the last eUBM/colonoscopy section for each animal was completed,the colons were fixed,paraffin-embedded,and stained with hematoxylin and *** images acquired at the first time-point for each mouse were compared with subsequent eUBM/colonoscopic images of the same sites obtained in the following acquisitions to evaluate lesion ***:All 10 mice had eUBM and colonoscopic images acquired at week 13(the first time-point).Two animals died immediately after the first imaging acquisition and,consequently,only 8 mice were subjected to the second eUBM/colonoscopy imaging acquisition(at the second time-point).Due to the advanced stage of colonic tumorigenesis,5 animals died after the second time-point image acquisition,and t

This paper presents the concept of a new platform used to simulate surgical procedures in health field. Jchai3D is a tool which allows easy developing of virtual reality applications. Using this framework is possible to build simulations systems which can be used as educational/training tools. Jchai3D is totally open-source and it is available online for download. In addition, Jchai3D is multiplatform, and it can be executed in several environments like Windows, Linux or Mac OS. © 2012 IEEE.
