The input of SARS-CoV-2 or its fragments into freshwater ecosystems (via domestic or hospital sewage) has raised concerns about its possible impacts on aquatic organisms. Thus, using mayfly larvae [Cloeon dipterum (L.), Ephemeroptera: Baetidae] as a model system, we aimed to evaluate the possible effects of the combined short exposure of SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides (named PSPD-2001, PSPD-2002, and PSPD-2003 – at 266.2 ng/L) with multiple emerging pollutants at ambient concentrations. After six days of exposure, we observed higher mortality of larvae exposed to SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides (alone or in combination with the pollutant mix) and a lower-body condition index than those unexposed larvae. In the "PSPD" and "Mix+PSPD" groups, the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and the total thiol levels were also lower than in the "control" group. In addition, we evidenced the induction of nitrosative stress (inferred by increased nitrite production) and reduced acetylcholinesterase activity by SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides. On the other hand, malondialdehyde levels in larvae exposed to treatments were significantly lower than in unexposed larvae. The values of the integrated biomarker response index and the results of the principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed the similarity between the responses of animals exposed to SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides (alone and in combination with the pollutant mix). Although viral peptides did not intensify the effects of the pollutant mix, our study sheds light on the potential ecotoxicological risk associated with the spread of the new coronavirus in aquatic environments and therefore, recommends that this topic be explored in other organisms and different experimental contexts. © 2022, The Authors. Polypropylene-based medical devices significantly increased production and usage in COVID-19 pandemic states, and this material is very resilient in the environment. Thus, rapid action is needed to reduce this pollution now more than ever. This study focuses on the degradation of polypropylene microplastics (PP MPs) by unique marine bacterial strains obtained from the Thoundi (Bacillus tropicus, B. cereus, Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila, and Brucella pseudintermedia) and Rameshwaram coasts (B. cereus). Those above five bacterial strains were chosen after preliminary screening of their hydrophobicity, biofilm-forming capabilities, and responsiveness to the zone of clearance technique. During the biodegradation process (28 days), these five isolates' growth, metabolic activity, and viability were all raised. After the post-biodegradation process, the weight loss percentages of the mentioned bacterial strains treated with PP MPs were gradually decreased. UV-DRS and SEM analysis confirmed that bacterial strains adhering to MPs cause cracks and cavities on their surface. The degradation of PP MPs can be inferred from alterations in the FT-IR spectrum, specifically in the carbonyl group range of 1100-1700 cm-1, as well as changes in the 1H NMR spectrum, including chemical shift and proton peak pattern alterations. Bacterial strains facilitated the degradation of MPs through the secretion of enzymes. The findings of this study indicate that marine bacteria may possess distinctive characteristics that facilitate the degradation of plastic waste and contribute to environmental conservation. © 2023, The Authors. Although several studies are confirming the ubiquity of microplastics (MPs) in environments, our knowledge about their effects on human health is still very limited. Therefore, while we have not gathered definitive information on their consequences, studies that aim to identify the MPs sources constitute subsidies to better understand the various exposure pathways to these pollutants. Thus, we investigated the possible presence of MP-like particles in five brands of commercial sugars and two unpacked, unbranded, and unlabeled sugars (hereinafter referred to as "non-branded"), obtained from different supermarkets in Dhaka (Bangladesh). Surprisingly, MPs-like particles were identified in all analyzed samples and taken together, our data demonstrated similar variations (between branded and non-branded samples) in terms of number, size, shape, color, and polymer composition. The combined effect of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) and abamectin (ABM) pesticides on organisms through oxidative stress and apoptosis is a growing area of research, with potential implications for environmental and human health. Although the combined toxicity effect of MP and pesticides has recently been described, there is minimal evidence of ocular region damages due to PE and ABM combined. Thus, this study focuses on determining the toxicity level between the single and combined exposure of PE-MP and ABM in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) model. After five days, the combined exposure of PE-MP and ABM decreased the survival rate compared to a single exposure. A significant increase in oxidative parameters such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, apoptosis, and a decrease in glutathione level was observed in zebrafish larvae. Also, the superoxide dismutase and catalase activity were impaired. Additionally, the morphological changes in the eyes of zebrafish, such as damaged lens, loss of ganglion cells, disruption of inner and outer plexiform, and photoreceptor layer damage, were noticed more in the combined exposure group than the individual exposure. Furthermore, the Bax and P53 expression (specific apoptotic genes) was significantly upregulated after the combined exposure of PE-MP and ABM. So, the synergetic effect of PE-MP and ABM pesticides cannot be ignored their toxicological effect, and further research on other higher models is required to confirm its consequences. © 2023, The Authors. The gene pool of a spermatozoon is its main contribution to fertilization, and the integrity of the DNA is fundamental for the embryo’s development. The comet assay (single-cell gel electrophoresis) is a sensitive tool to assess DNA damage. Still, despite its widespread use in some mammalian species, there was no protocol adapted for cats in the literature. Thus, the present study aimed to standardize comet assay protocols, in alkaline and neutral versions, for species of the genus Puma and to evaluate whether semen cryopreservation per se would cause changes in DNA. Semen samples were collected from captive animals (P. concolor n=2;P. yagouaroundi n=7) at Associação Mata Ciliar, Jundiaí, Brazil, and the test was conducted on fresh or refrigerated semen samples for five hours. The findings showed that both assay versions effectively detected DNA damage in both species, but the alkaline version was the most sensitive. Baseline damage levels in fertile individuals of the species were, on average, 24.43% ± 15.80 and 23.68% ± 9.37 by the alkaline comet and 1.91% ± 2.32 and 2.54 % ± 0.70 for neutral, respectively, in P. concolor and P. yagouaroundi. Cryopreservation of semen samples induced an increase in sperm mortality. In conclusion, the protocols used for the comet assay and the data obtained can contribute to evaluating the fertility of species of the genus Puma and developing assisted reproduction techniques. © 2023, The Authors. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a plasticizer commonly used in the plastics industry to manufacture plastic materials. It is abundant in aquatic ecosystems, resulting in increased contamination and lower concentrations that may represent a significant threat to the aquatic system. Hence in the present study, an Indian major carp, Labeo rohita , was exposed to two different BPA concentrations (1 and 10 µg/L) for 30 days. Compared to control, the chronic effects resulted in significant alterations in red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cells (WBC) count. The exposure to BPA caused significant changes in antioxidant activity in gill, liver, and kidney tissues (inferred by catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase activity) in L. rohita . Regarding lipid peroxidation (LPO), we observed an increase in liver and kidney alteration, while LPO was noted in gill tissue compared to control. Furthermore, increased Na + /K + -ATPase activity was observed in gills at the end of the 10th day and a gradual decrease at the end of the 30th day. These results indicated that exposure to BPA alters the RBC and WBC levels, antioxidant enzyme activity (gills, liver, and kidney), and Na + /K + -ATPase activity in t gill of L. rohita exposed to BPA (at 1 and 10 µg/L). Therefore, our findings will help us gain better insight into the toxicity of BPA in aquatic environments. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Curculigo orchioides rhizome explants were employed to develop a rapid and effective strategy for increased plant regeneration using somatic embryogenesis. Direct somatic embryo development was shown on rhizome explants cultivated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) making with 2, 4-D (1.0 - 3.0 mg/L). Rhizome explants cultivated on MS media supplemented with 2.0 mg/L 2, 4-D yielded the highest frequency of embryogenesis (87.5 %) and the maximum number of somatic embryos (1596.7/explant). Somatic embryo germination was accomplished using MS media with 2.0 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). With an 80% survival rate, the germination plantlets were acclimated in the greenhouse. The current study is the first evidence of the efficacy of in vitro produced plants and C. orchioides somatic embryo callus cultures of stable gold nanoparticles. The UV- Vis spectrophotometric absorbance, at 510 nm, revealed the absorption spectra of the AuNPs. The FT-IR revealed functional groups and reaction processes in green AuNP formation. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) was used to assess the surface morphology and structure of the AuNPs after their elemental composition was determined using a dispersive energy X-ray (EDAX) spectrum. The average size of AuNPs was around 35 nm in diameter. The crystalline nature of the AuNPs was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The highest growth inhibition was found for C. orcthioides against Klebsiella pneumoniae (17.5 mm) and Serratia marcescens (16.5 mm). The AuNPs exhibited antioxidant activity against free radicals such as DPPH and ABTS. Furthermore, cytotoxicity of AuNPs was assessed, and inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 20µg/mL and 80µg/mL for breast carcinoma (MDA-MB-231) and Vero cell lines. The degradation of methylene blue measures the photocatalytic activity of the manufactured AuNPs when subjected to visible sunlight (MB). Plasticrusts manifest as a coating on intertidal rocks due to environmental exposure. They refer to crushed plastic debris that blankets rocks found along intertidal shorelines. This study significantly contributes to a better understanding of the occurrence of these novel plastic formations, shedding light on their potential pathways of formation during the Anthropocene era. The research provides comprehensive insights into the composition, origins, challenges, and effective management strategies for removing coastal plastic litter. The findings of this investigation offer valuable evidence regarding the formation and impact of these recently discovered plastic items in coastal regions, prompting discussions about their formation processes and their effects on the marine ecosystem. Recognizing that these newly emerged plastic litter pose a considerable threat to the marine environment is crucial. With their emergence, we face an environmental challenge, especially concerning the health of coastal ecosystems. Plasticrusts, when degraded, can release microplastics (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) into the surrounding environment. These micro- and nano-sized plastic particles pose significant ecological risks as they persist in ecosystems, potentially harming wildlife and entering the food chain, causing widespread environmental contamination.
