The synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) from plants is a viable eco-friendly approach with applications in different sectors. Thus, we aim to synthesize and characterize zinc oxide NPs (ZnO NPs) from Ficus racemosa L. leaf extract and to evaluate their larvicidal potential against Aedes albopictus larvae, their efficacy against human clinical pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli). Furthermore, we evaluated its use in photocatalytic rhodamine B (RhB) dye degradation and its possible acute toxicity to a non-target organism (Artemia salina). The biosynthesized ZnO NPs were characterized using UV-Vis, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, and FT-IR. UV-vis absorption spectrum indicates that the green synthesized ZnO NPs absorb at the wavelength centered at 365 nm, corresponding to the band gap of 3.2 eV. We reported that A. albopictus mosquito larvae were highly susceptible to ZnO NPs, especially when exposed to 250 µg ZnO NPs/mL. The reduction of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and the carboxylesterases phosphatases evaluated was concentration-dependent, constituting a possible mechanism of larvicidal action of NPs. Biosynthesized ZnO NPs also significantly inhibited the growth of the bacterial species evaluated, suggesting good bactericidal activity. Furthermore, the ZnO NPs efficiently degraded RhB dye in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation, proving promising in dye remediation in wastewater. Finally, ZnO NPs suspension exhibited lower acute toxicity of A. salina after 48 h of exposure. Therefore, our study pioneeringly demonstrates that biosynthesis of ZnO NPs from F. racemosa leaf extract can be a great approach to developing versatile and environmental products. © 2023, The Authors. We aimed to test the hypothesis that the association of polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs) to a mix of emerging pollutants induces more adverse genotoxic, mutagenic, and redox unbalance effects in zebrafish, after 15 days of exposure. Although the accumulation of MPs in animals was greater in animals exposed to PE-MPs alone, erythrocyte DNA damage and the frequency of ENAs evidenced in zebrafish exposed to PE- MPs alone were as pronounced as those observed in animals exposed to the mix of pollutant (alone or in combination with MPs). Moreover, we noticed that such effects were associated with an imbalance between pro- and antioxidant metabolism in animals, whose activity of SOD and CAT assessed in different organs which was not sufficient to counterbalance the production of reactive oxygen species and nitrogen evaluated. The main component analysis (PCA) also revealed that while the antioxidant activity was more pronounced in the brain and liver of animals, the highest production of H2O2 was perceived in the gills and muscles, suggesting that the biochemical response of the animals was organ-dependent. Thus, the present study did not demonstrate antagonistic, synergistic, or additive effects on animals exposed to the combination between PE-MPs and a mix of pollutants in zebrafish. © 2022, The Authors. The present study aimed to assess the Bacillus cereus SDN1 native bacterium's ability to clean up contaminated, polluted water. This bacterium was identified by its morphological and biochemical characteristics, which were then confirmed at the genus level. Furthermore, the isolated B. cereus (NCBI accession No: MW828583) was identified genomically by PCR amplifying 16s rDNA using a universal primer. The phylogenetic analysis of the rDNA sequence was conducted to determine the taxonomic and evolutionary profile of the isolate of the previously identified Bacillus sp. Besides, B. cereus and the bacterial consortium were treated using sewage wastewater. After 15 days of treatment, the following pollutants were reduced: total hardness particles removal varied from 63.33% to 67.55%, calcium removal varied from 90% to 93.33%, and total nitrate decreased range from 37.77% to 22.22%, respectively. Electrical conductivity ranged from 1809 mS/cm to 2500 mS/cm, and pH values ranged from 6.5 to 8.95. The outcome of in-situ remediation results suggests that B. cereus has a noticeable remediation efficiency to the suspended particles. A root tip test was also utilized to investigate the genotoxicity of treated and untreated sewage-contaminated waters on onion (Allium cepa) root cells. The highest chromosomal aberrations and mitotic inhibition were found in roots exposed to contaminated water. The study can thus be applied as a biomarker to identify the genotoxic impacts of sewage water pollution on biota. It may be concluded that employing bacterial consortia for domestic wastewater treatment could be a suitable strategy for chemical contaminants removal. Additionally, based on an identified bacterial consortium, this work offers a low-cost and eco-favorable method for treating household effluent. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The water bodies in Bangladesh thrive from plastic pollution. Estuaries are pools of environmental contaminants, and the world’s largest mangrove forest, Sundarbans’ estuary, is no exception. Thus, for the first time, we investigate MPs abundance in the muscle and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of twenty estuarine species of fish and shellfish of the Sundarbans, as well as the human health risk. MPs abundance was evident in all the samples ranging from 5.37±1.07 to 54.30±16.53 MP items/g wet body weight (dw) in muscle samples and 7.33±1.89 to 205.61±136.88 MP items/g (dw) in GIT samples. The estimated health risk from MPs is substantial, where the average human intake will be 85,710.08 items of MPs per year per capita for the population of Bangladesh. The dominant polymer types observed using ATR-FTIR are PP and PE (17.5 %), PA (17.5 %) in the muscle tissues, and PP and PE (11.11 %), and EVA (11.11 %) in the GITs. Bottom-feeding species, such as demersal and benthic species, are more contaminated. However, the level of MPs in the species shows a negative correlation with the length and weight of the species. This study reveals that MP pollution is widespread and concerning in Bangladesh's Sundarban mangrove estuarine zone. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
