In this paper we proposed an approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) and digital image processing (DIP) to deal with the problem of cutting identical items (pieces) with irregular shapes in metal plates (objects). The goal is to maximize the number of items to be cut in the available area of the object. In this approach both object and the items are depicted as color images. The GA is responsible for generating the solutions, each one represented by a vector containing a set of translations and angles that indicate the positions and orientations for cutting the pieces. The evaluation of each solution generated by GA is performed by an image analysis algorithm that basically detects overlapping among the items placed on the object. Preliminary experiments indicate that the use of GA combined with DIP is a good alternative for solving the investigated problem. © 2015 ACM.

Renal failure is a condition characterized by the progressive loss of the renal function of blood clearance. One of the treatment options is by hemodialysis sessions, where a machine performs the kidneys' functions such as filtering and cleaning the blood. In the machine, there are air bubbles ultrasonic sensors, as also as optical sensors for detect blood leakage and presence. Many times the ultrasonic sensor detects false positives causing the procedure to pause. These pauses stops patient's blood circulation and can cause blood coagulation. Moreover, the abrupt restart of the blood external circulation can cause the appearance of air bubbles not detected by the ultrasonic sensor causing air embolism. The use of more efficient sensors might result in decrease of the number of complications during hemodialysis and thus, improve the patients' quality of life. This work presents the development of an optical sensor prototype for air bubbles and additionally for clots detection. The sensor could be applied in the blood circuit of hemodialysis machines.

The following paper introduces a parallel approach to a social variant of the Genetic Algorithm, called Parallel Genetic Algorithm with Social Interaction (PSIGA). The algorithm is based on social games involving game theory, and it is implemented using the OpenMP API, which is based on the shared memory programming model for multiple processor architectures. The main contribution of this approach is the parallelization using the Shared Memory of the Social Interaction Genetic Algorithm (SIGA) in order to achieve faster and better optimality than its nonparallel counterpart for global optimization problems with restrictions. For means of performance assessment, the algorithm is tested on four instances of engineering design problems and the obtained results compared with the Genetic Algorithm with Social Interaction (SIGA) implemented in sequential programming model.

Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. programmability is one of the key factors on software defined networks (SDN), once it allows to decouple between data plan and control plan. However, in such context, managing several applications' inputs and outputs is a little explored task on controllers field, which are not in a controlled and organized environment. This article proposes a method to make SDN applications to reach the administrator, allow him to manage his use in the network. This proposal is validated through performance tests in the repository, which stores the applications, along with developed modules to help its management and control, making the organization and coordination method safe, efficient and adjustable to any controller on software-defined network.

The literature identifies a trend of new vehicles development at global level resulting in a global product development (GPD). In this context, this paper aims at analyzing the decentralization of GPD in an assembler of commercial vehicles. Factors that contribute to the decentralization of GPD are considered in this investigation as well as their causes. Case-based research is adopted as the research methodological approach, conducted in a Brazilian assembler and its headquarters in Germany. The results indicate that the organization reacts similarly to other economics industrial sectors (e.g. telecommunications) when facing the decision of decentralizing GPD. Unlike other studies, it was also found that modular design has influence on the GPD decentralization process. The interest of the local market and historical aspects of the evolution of the subsidiary were found to be relevant. From these results a proposed structure for GPD and adoption of modular design is suggested. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a methodology for roughness analysis based on surface characteristics of images obtained from optical and electronic microscopes. Texture analysis has been widely used in different fields, such as medical image analysis, visual interpretation of remote sensing images, image search and industrial quality inspection of manufactured products, which is the focus of this paper. We present a novel method of analysis based on texture characteristics. The Haralick descriptors are used to describe the surface texture and to classify its roughness. The primary roughness standards are evaluated and classified according to several features considering these descriptors. The set of values is the input of a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network. The obtained results show that it can be possible to advance this methodology in order to develop a roughness digital measurement system for the evaluation of surface ending process. © 2012 Institute of Telecommunica.

This work presents a combination of the Model-View-Controller pattern with the Evolutionary Acquisition Interdisciplinary Research Project Management for web services *** intends to promote an increase in productivity and to facilitate interdisciplinary web services *** consists of an independent database for users' feedback that together with technological opportunities and evolving threats considerations may start a new release of the system allowing a dynamic evolution through acquiring new features or correcting errors,but the new release decision is not *** other words,web service evolution is accomplished adding requirements analysis into the Model-View-Controller pattern,which is incorporated into Interdisciplinary Research Project Management.
