The following paper introduces a parallel approach to a social variant of the Genetic Algorithm, called Parallel Genetic Algorithm with Social Interaction (PSIGA). The algorithm is based on social games involving game theory, and it is implemented using the OpenMP API, which is based on the shared memory programming model for multiple processor architectures. The main contribution of this approach is the parallelization using the Shared Memory of the Social Interaction Genetic Algorithm (SIGA) in order to achieve faster and better optimality than its nonparallel counterpart for global optimization problems with restrictions. For means of performance assessment, the algorithm is tested on four instances of engineering design problems and the obtained results compared with the Genetic Algorithm with Social Interaction (SIGA) implemented in sequential programming model.

This paper presents a methodology for roughness analysis based on surface characteristics of images obtained from optical and electronic microscopes. Texture analysis has been widely used in different fields, such as medical image analysis, visual interpretation of remote sensing images, image search and industrial quality inspection of manufactured products, which is the focus of this paper. We present a novel method of analysis based on texture characteristics. The Haralick descriptors are used to describe the surface texture and to classify its roughness. The primary roughness standards are evaluated and classified according to several features considering these descriptors. The set of values is the input of a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network. The obtained results show that it can be possible to advance this methodology in order to develop a roughness digital measurement system for the evaluation of surface ending process.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

The inventory control systems has an important role to monitor the condition of the goods at the supply chain stage of goods distribution from the central warehouse to retail in accordance with consumer demand. The research aims to develop inventory control systems on the supply chain distribution of goods from suppliers to retail through the central warehouse with minimal supply chain costs. Minimization of supply chain cost using martingale model of forecast evaluation, and the result as the basis for calculation of safety stock and reorder point. The results of research are the system that can be used to control inventory and renewal of goods in the central warehouse by calculating the minimization of supply chain cost based on consumer demand. Case studies were conducted on the supply chain distribution of goods from the central warehouse to the retail in Semarang. The observation data derived from the goods distribution from central warehouse to retail for certain products over 4 time periods. Through such inventory control system, can minimize supply chain cost, and product inventory level can be maintained in time and amount of inventory that must be fulfilled. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper proposes a multiobjective heuristic search approach to support a project portfolio selection technique on scenarios with a large number of candidate projects. The original formulation for the technique requires analyzing all combinations of candidate projects, which is unfeasible when more than a few alternatives are available. We have used a multiobjective genetic algorithm to partially explore the search space of project combinations and select the most effective ones. We present an experimental study based on four project selection problems that compares the results found by the genetic algorithm to those yielded by a non-systematic search procedure. Results show evidence that the project selection technique can be used in large-scale scenarios and that GA presents better results than simpler search strategy. The development of real-time quality estimator schemes for emerging Internet videos with different content types remains a significant challenge and is crucial for the success of wireless multimedia systems. However, currently in-service assessment schemes fail in capturing subjective aspects of multimedia content related to the user perception. Therefore, this paper proposes an on-the-fly parametric video quality estimator approach (called MultiQoE) for real-time video streaming applications. Experiments in a Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) scenario were carried out to show the accuracy, benefit, and impact of MultiQoE compared to widely used Quality of Experience (QoE) subjective, objective and parametric methods.

This paper tackles the short-term hydro-power unit commitment problem in a multi-reservoir system - a cascade-based operation scenario. For this, we propose a new mathematical modelling in which the goal is to maximize the total energy production of the hydro-power plant in a sub-daily operation, and, simultaneously, to maximize the total water content (volume) of reservoirs. For solving the problem, we discuss the Multi-objective Evolutionary Swarm Hybridization (MESH) algorithm, a recently proposed multiobjective swarm intelligence-based optimization method which has obtained very competitive results when compared to existing evolutionary algorithms in specific applications. The MESH approach has been applied to find the optimal water discharge and the power produced at the maximum reservoir volume for all possible combinations of turbines in a hydro-power plant. The performance of MESH has been compared with that of well-known evolutionary approaches such as NSGA-II, NSGA-III, SPEA2, and MOEA/D in a realistic problem considering data from a hydro-power energy system with two cascaded hydro-power plants in Brazil. Results indicate that MESH showed a superior performance than alternative multi-objective approaches in terms of efficiency and accuracy, providing a profit of $412,500 per month in a projection analysis carried out. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Manufacturing maraging steel components using laser-based powder bed fusion (LPBF) presents an attractive proposition for industries due to the material's combination of mechanical properties such as hardness, wear resistance, and toughness, and the capability to produce parts with complex geometries and high precision. Despite these advantages, the LPBF process induces defects such as distortion and residual stress associated with the complex thermal cycles, compromising final part quality. Numerical simulations have been developed to predict these defects. However, LPBF simulations remain challenging due to the complexity of the process and the substantial computational resources required. For maraging steel, for example, the occurrence of phase transformation promotes compressive stress that interferes in results and makes simulations inaccurate. This research aims to simulate a geometry with a circular inner channel and investigate distortion, volume fraction of martensite and equivalent stress results. Modeling was performed by varying phase transformation rate parameters to assess the impact of transformations on simulation outcomes. Results showed minimal impact of these parameters on distortions and equivalent stress. Equivalent stress results were compared with literature findings, while distortion results were validated against experimental data to validate the accuracy of the model. © 2024, The Authors. His early assignments were with the General Engineering Laboratory and the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady. N. Y. He joined the Marine Turbine and Gear Department in 1968 as Manager Engineering Administration. and assumed his present assignment as Manager Engineering Resource Planning & Administration in 1976. Mr. Gingrich was instrumental in procuring the Interactive Graphics System for the Medium Steam Department. having headed up the Study Team and is now responsible for the Interactive Graphics Systems management including new procurements. He is a member of the American Institute of Design Drafting and is currently the Chairman of the Computer-Aided Drafting Committee in that organization. Mr. Reinhold L. Winter is a graduate of the General Electric Apprentice Program and Salem State College from which he received his B.S. degree in Business Administration. He has nineteen years experience with the General Electric Company including eight years in Business Systems and Programming two years in Computer Operations Management and six years in his present position as Manager Engineering Business Systems. He was a member of the original Study Team that investigated and selected the present Applicon Interactive Graphics (IAG) equipment and currently is responsible for the management of software and hardware support for the ZAG Facility.

This paper discusses the Interactive Graphics System used by the General Electric Company, Medium Steam Turbine Department (engineering & Manufacturing) for designing, drafting, and manufacturing applications. A brief overview of the hardware malting up the system is described, followed by a more detailed description of the actual applications. Two-dimensional applications described include a Heat Balance Analysis, Flow Diagrams, and Electrical Schematics. A more fruitful area for increased productivity gains is described in the three-dimensional or mechanical applications including turbine design & layout and bucket design. coordination of the design with manufacturing for numerical control tape generation is described through CAM and Plate Frame Cutting applications. Finally, a short review of the engineering design work using Interactive Graphics is discussed. Productivity gains of 2.6 to 1 are being realized, and the overall savings to the Medium Steam Department are outlined.
