This paper presents the development of aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHZ to 64 GHz), with square and circular shapes, for on-chip application. The aperture-coupled antenna proposed is composed by a transmission feed line, an aperture and patch element built in aluminum with 10 micrometers of thickness lying on two layers of silicon with height of 200 micrometers. Dimensions of the square and circular antennas were calculated according to the effective wavelength for resonance frequency at 60 GHz in order to match at 50 Ohms. The proposed antennas have been simulated using the commercial software ANSYS. Both antennas show omnidirectional radiation pattern, with half power beamwidth greater than 149 degrees. Square patch presented a more compact structure, with dimension less than 1.55 mm, return loss of -55 dB, and bandwidth of 3.98 GHz, however the circular antenna, with a greater metallic area, achieved a better gain of 5.88 dBi.

This paper purposes the development of an isolated battery charger. In energy storage systems, these devices are essential, performing batteries charging in the way to maintain their lifecycle and safety since they are main responsible for the costs associated with these systems. In many works theses circuits are implemented through bidirectional Full-Bridge converters. These converters require auxiliary circuits to reduce their switching losses. However, circuits such as snubbers or voltage clampers are not adequately addressed in these works since their use is undesirable for bidirectional operation. To eliminate these circuits in isolated converters, this work presents a switching technique applied in a Full-Bridge converter with the objective to reduce overvoltage in semiconductors and make it suitable for use in bidirectional converters, as in the charge of battery banks.

A switch machine is an electromechanical device that allows railway trains to be guided from one track to another. Among all possible faults that can occur in a switch machine, the three mains ones are: lack of lubrication, lack of adjustment and malfunction of a component. Aiming to classify these faults, an important contribution of this work is to address the height type-reduction and interval singleton type-2 fuzzy logic system derivatives. The computational simulations are performed with real data set provided by a Brazilian company of the railway sector. The obtained results are compared with other models reported in the literature (Bayes theory, multilayer perceptron neural network and type-1 fuzzy logic system), demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed classifier and revealing that the proposal is able to properly handle with uncertainties associated with the measurements and with the data that are used to tune the parameters of the model. In addition, the convergence speed and performance analysis show that the proposed interval singleton type-2 fuzzy logic system is attractive for classifying faults in a switch machine.

Beamforming front-ends are an attractive technology because it concentrates its radiated power in one direction, which can improve energy efficiency and reduce undesirable interference. In this context, electronic beamforming systems have lower cost than mechanical ones. Knowing the uses of directive antennas and power dividers in electronic beamforming systems, this work aims at the design, simulation and measurements of these components at 5.8 GHz. Measurements with Power Divider showed very good return and insertion losses at 5.8 GHz: S 11 = -23.5 dB and S 21 = -3.8 dB. A printed dipole antenna was then fabricated, presenting -14.6 dB of return losses and a 2.82 dBi gain. Later, a 2-antenna beamforming front-end was implemented, proving the beamforming capability with the proposed devices. It also presented S 11 = -15.7 dB, and a high directive gain (10.3 dBi). Since this is still a preliminary work, the results presented are very promising.

Additional losses in transformers due to harmonic distortion cause further heating in their structural parts, and damage their suitable operation, thereby reducing their lifetime. This paper proposes an energy efficiency study in transformer, by comparing the temperature measurements obtained from a 10 kVA three-phase dry transformer under sinusoidal voltage and current conditions, and under power supply voltage with sub- and interharmonic. It is also performed a comparison between experimental and simulation results obtained from a model 3D transformer developed in COMSOL Multiphysics software.

Wireless communication devices such as tablets are increasing and developing rapidly. The effects of the electromagnetic (EM) waves in the human body from the wireless communication devices have been paid attention. It is well known that the absorption of electromagnetic waves on the human head for a certain period of time may lead to health problems such as headaches, or even worse, significantly increased risk of brain cancer. In this paper, the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) in the head of tablet user's is simulated for three different head models and compared with available international recommendations. The models used are the Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin (SAM) and two realistic models of human head (a 34 years old adult and a 6 years old child). The simulations were performed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and the frequency used to feed the antenna was 2.45 GHz. All the results are below the safety recommendations set up by the International Commission Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the Federal Communications Committee (FCC). Among the heterogeneous models, the highest peak spatial Specific Absorption Rate (psSAR) values are estimated for the children. For 1 g psSAR the child heterogeneous model shows highest value in comparison to the SAM model. Copyright © 2015 for the individual papers by the papers' authors.

This paper presents a comparison of sensorless vector control strategies for Induction Motor (IM). The strategies includes an Indirect Field Orientation Control (IFOC) and a Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS). Several studies have been proposed in the literature concerning different approaches of MRAS estimators. In this work, an evaluation is performed of three MRAS approaches for estimate the rotor speed from different models: rotor flux, back electromotive force (back-EMF) and instantaneous reactive power. Matlab simulations are performed to test the proposed strategy for different speed and sensitivity of such drives to parameters variations. To verify the approach to sensorless techniques with variations of speed in real conditions a drive for the prototype was assembled and experimental results are presented.

PV Grid-connected inverters must fulfill the standards specifications of current harmonics injected to the grid. In order to satisfy these grid requirements, passive filters are connected between the inverter and the grid. This paper compares the response characteristic of the traditional inductive (L) filter with the inductive-capacitive-inductive (LCL) filter. It is shown that the increasing the inductance L leads to a good ripple current suppression around the inverter switch frequency. The LCL filter provides better harmonic attenuation and reduces the filter size. The main drawback is the LCL filter impedance, which is characterized by a typical resonance peak, which has to be damped to avoid instability. Passive or active techniques can be used to damp the LCL resonance. To address this issue, this paper presents a comparison of passive and active damping strategies. Experimental results are given to support the theoretical analysis and to illustrate the performance of grid connected PV inverter system.

The LCL filter is one of the most used filters in grid connected distributed generation. It is mainly due to its efficiency and reduced physical size when compared to a typical L filter. However, the LCL filter has an inherent resonance frequency that can lead the system to instability or power quality degradation. The converter or the grid current can be used as controlled variable in the current controller. Based in this context, this paper analyzes the stability and studies the control issues brought by the dynamics of the LCL filter. A comparative analysis of the results provided by the use of different controlled variable in the current controller is presented. An evaluation of PI and PD control is done to verify which one is the better option to be used in the current control. A theoretical analysis is carried out based in the pole-zero map of the system, Bode diagrams and numerical simulation.

This work aims the implementation of a system to support decision-making to buy and sells share on the São Paulo Stock Exchange. To do that it was used a genetic algorithm with the help of technical analysis indicators. The Indicators allow us to detect trends, being widely used in the prediction of prices. The prediction of high or low at the stock market is a complex problem that involves a wide range of factors, ranging from the feeling of each market participant to a natural disaster. Thus, this system is not intended to be a crucial tool for decision making, but rather a supporting tool that if in a combination with other methods of analysis (such as fundamental analysis for example) and privileged information, can provide a higher accuracy for a solution of this problem.
