One of the principles of Smart Grids is to have a communication network that will integrate equipment allowing the monitoring and operation to be performed in real time in order to improve the quality indicators. However, this migration to an automated and monitored environment will demand many resources that will be used to perform the migration gradually. Therefore, this work proposes a methodology for allocation of meters with the function of improving the accuracy of state estimation algorithms, but also considering other selection criteria, given the fact that many of automation equipment such as reclosers, automated switches, voltage controllers also perform the function of meters. The paper demonstrates the implementation of a state estimator based on the WLS method, which serves as the basis for the analysis of quantitative criteria such as the accuracy of the estimator, losses, voltage levels and reliability. Thus, the criteria are analyzed considering the needs defined by experts through the Analytic Hierarchy Process, so alternatives of locations and equipment can be prioritized. Finally, the methodology is demonstrated by experimental evaluation on a real feeder.

This paper presents a parallel implementation approach of selective harmonic compensator for active power filters. This approach uses field programmable gate array (FPGAs) in order to reduce the compensator computational time. To compensate for even a small number of harmonics digital filters require multiple calculation instructions involving multiplications and additions. Thus, to improve the performance of the computer system it is proposed the digital compensator implementation using parallel structures in FPGA devices. Experimental results are presented to compare the speedup of the proposed parallel approach with the DSP sequential execution time conventionally used in active power filters applications.

This paper presents a FPGA based approach for a modular architecture of Fuzzy Neural Networks (FNN) to embed with easily different topologies set up. The project is based on a Takagi - Hayashi (T-H) method for the construction and tuning of fuzzy rules, this is commonly referred as neural network driven fuzzy reasoning. The proposed architecture approach consists of two main configurable modules: a Multilayer Perceptron - MLP with sigmoidal activation function that composes the first module to determine a Fuzzy membership function; the second employs an MLP with pure linear activation function to define the consequents. The DSPBuilder ® software along the Simulink ® is used to connect, set and synthesize the Fuzzy Neural Network desired. Other hardware components employed in the architecture proposed cooperate to the system modularity. The system was tested and validated through a control problem and an interpolation problem. Several papers proposed different hardware architecture to implement hybrid systems by using Fuzzy logic and Neural Network. However, there is no approach with this specific neural network driven fuzzy reasoning by T-H method and the aim to be embedded. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation were used to train the FNN proposed off-line.

This work proposes the application of a battery or plug-in electric vehicle powertrain on the mitigation of possible residential electricity network power quality problems by means of the integration of a shunt active power filter into its power electronics circuitry. The integration of additional functions to an electric vehicle is a very desirable feature, since it can result on cost reduction (in comparison to the separately implementation of the integrated functions). Simulation results provide evidence of the possible employment of power electronics converters, inherent to the vehicle propulsion system, in order to reduce harmonic content and improve power factor in single-phased electric networks.

This paper proposes the use of an explicit dynamic predictive control which is a PWA (PieceWise Affine) function of the dynamic model states of a robotic wheelchair. The optimization algorithmic is based on Multi-parametrical programming, allowing all calculations of this controller be performed off-line, before starting the system operation, resulting in a reduction of online computational time. This paper presents the description of a DC electronic load based on an interleaved chopper converter to determine the biasing and dynamics characteristics of either fuel cells (FCs) and photovoltaic panels (PVs). Variable loads are used for experimental data acquisition of I-V power supply characteristics in a way that several operating points can be easily obtained. Laboratory load current tests using ordinary power resistors are not an easy solution due to their size, cost and overall weight. To resolve that it is proposed in this paper that the current through electronically varying loads can give better resolution to the I-V characteristics of FC and PV sources. The interleaved operation of the chopper converter ensures an input high frequency current ripple, reducing so the input LC filters size and converter volume. The converter transfer function is analyzed and controllers are designed to obtain a fast dynamic response and insure good stability in steady state operation. It is presented the converter operating principles, operating states and design. The simulated and results are compared to each other in order to prove the electronic load effectiveness in acquiring the I-V biasing curves of fuel cells and photovoltaic panels.

The present work describes the simulation to be used in the control of a mechanical arm using a Visual Evoked Potential to drive a Brain Computer Interface system. The signal processing and classifying was done using the Multiple Coherence K 2 N . The proposed classifier was able to detect the difference between four different frequencies presented at the same time. The Multiple Coherence classifier had a hit rate of 95%.
