The growing use of synthetic chemical compounds/substances in vector control of mosquitoes, associated with their adverse effects on the environment and non-target organisms, has demanded the development of eco-friendly alternatives. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the larvicidal action of different cellulose microcrystalline (CMs) concentrations and investigate their toxicity mechanisms in Culex quinquefasciatus fourth instar larvae as a model species. Probit analysis revealed that the median lethal concentrations (LC50) for 24 h and 36 h exposure were 100 and 58.29 mg/L, respectively. We also showed that such concentrations induced a redox imbalance in the larvae, marked by an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as a reduction in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Furthermore, different alterations in the external morphology of the larvae were associated with the ingestion of CMs. On the other hand, exposure of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to LC5024h and LC5036h for seven days did not induce any behavioral changes or alterations mutagenic, genotoxic, biochemical, or in the pro- and anti-inflammatory response. Thus, taken together, our study demonstrates for the first time that the use of CMs can constitute a promising strategy in the control of C. quinquefasciatus larvae, combining insecticidal efficiency with an "eco-friendly" approach in the fight against an important mosquito vector of several human diseases. © 2023, The Authors. We aimed at the ecotoxicity of CNFs (at 10 and 100 mg/kg) in Lumbricus terrestris earthworms naturally infected with Monocystis sp. After 28-d of exposure, treatments did not affect the survival rate. However, we observed a significant loss of body biomass, and Monocystis sp. infection in seminal vesicles was potentiated by exposure to CNFs. Earthworms exposed to CNFs showed a redox imbalance in the seminal vesicle, muscle, and intestine and an alteration in nitric oxide production in these organs. In muscles, we also noticed a significant reduction in AChE activity in earthworms exposed to CNFs. The histopathological analyses revealed the treatments' significant effect on the structures of the different evaluated tissues. When taken together and after applying IBRv2 and PCA, we noticed that the response of earthworms to CNFs at 100 mg/kg showed a more significant deviation from the unexposed group. Thus, we demonstrate that CNFs increase the parasite load of Monocystis sp. of adult L. terrestris earthworms and induce biochemical changes and histopathological changes, especially at 100 mg/kg. Our results point to the additional impact these nanomaterials can have on the health of earthworms, signaling the need for greater attention to their disposal and ecotoxicological effects on soil organisms. © 2023, The Authors. Although the ecotoxicity of carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) is known, the potential effect of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on edaphic organisms has not been evaluated. Thus, we aimed at the ecotoxicity of CNFs (at 10 and 100 mg/kg) in Lumbricus terrestris earthworms naturally infected with Monocystis sp. After 28 days of exposure, treatments did not affect the survival rate. However, we observed a significant loss of body biomass, and Monocystis sp. infection in seminal vesicles was potentiated by exposure to CNFs. Although we did not notice a concentration-response for several of the biomarkers, when taken together and after the application of IBRv2 and principal component analysis (PCA), we noticed that the response of earthworms to CNFs at 100 mg/kg showed a more significant deviation from the unexposed group. This was mainly determined by inhibiting antioxidant activity in the seminal vesicle, biochemical biomarkers assessed in muscle and intestine, and histomorphometric muscle biomarkers from earthworms exposed to CNFs at 100 mg/kg. Thus, we demonstrate that CNFs increase the parasite load of Monocystis sp. of adult L. terrestris earthworms and induce biochemical changes and histopathological changes, especially at 100 mg/kg. Our results point to the additional impact these nanomaterials can have on the health of earthworms, signaling the need for greater attention to their disposal and ecotoxicological effects on soil organisms. © 2023, The Authors. Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) has been receiving increasingly more attention all over the world as a special way for accessing new ideas and innovative opportunities through minor-share investing in established companies. The purpose of CVC investments may either be purely financial or to pursue strategic goals. Organisations often seek to take actions that impact positively on sustainability by assembling related knowledge and technologies. These resources may come from invested startups through the use of a CVC programme. This research aims to measure and analyse the Corporate Venture Capital programmes of companies listed in the ISE B3 Corporate Sustainability Index. To this end, a three-step methodology was conducted. First, a systematic review of the literature took place, followed by a review of companies based on secondary sources such as their websites. Finally, a survey was developed and was opted to survey companies through their Investor Relationship (IR) public channels. Results show that 27 of the companies listed in the ISE B3 Index have CVC programmes that contemplate organizational initiatives besides investment. In this sense, one can claim that at least 70% of the ISE B3 Index companies are somehow involved in CVC operations. The results contribute to the literature on corporate venture capital and sustainability by showing that companies spend from 10% to 15% of their capital in sustainable businesses in order to remain competitive. © 2022 by the authors.

Differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) is an extremely complex process that has proven difficult to study. In this research, we utilized nanotopography to elucidate details regarding iPSC differentiation by developing a nanodot platform consisting of nanodot arrays of increasing diameter. Subjecting iPSCs cultured on the nanodot platform to a cardiomyocyte (CM) differentiation protocol revealed several significant gene expression profiles that were associated with poor differentiation. The observed expression trends were used to select existing small-molecule drugs capable of modulating differentiation efficiency. BRD K98 was repurposed to inhibit CM differentiation, while iPSCs treated with NSC-663284, carmofur, and KPT-330 all exhibited significant increases in not only CM marker expression but also spontaneous beating, suggesting improved CM differentiation. In addition, quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed to determine the gene regulation responsible for modulating differentiation efficiency. Multiple genes involved in extracellular matrix remodeling were correlated with a CM differentiation efficiency, while genes involved in the cell cycle exhibited contrasting expression trends that warrant further studies. The results suggest that expression profiles determined via short time-series expression miner analysis of nanodot-cultured iPSC differentiation can not only reveal drugs capable of enhancing differentiation efficiency but also highlight crucial sets of genes related to processes such as extracellular matrix remodeling and the cell cycle that can be targeted for further investigation. Our findings confirm that the nanodot platform can be used to reveal complex mechanisms behind iPSC differentiation and could be an indispensable tool for optimizing iPSC technology for clinical applications. © 2024 The Authors. Brazil is currently the sixth world largest lubricating oil consumer,as a result,the sixth largest used lubricating oil (ULO) producer,with an annual ULO production of about one million ***,due to the environmental consequences and also to the large amount of this waste,it becomes necessary to quantify and qualify the impacts resulting from ULO management *** study evaluates,through the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology,the current ULO management system in southern *** comparisons regarding the environmental performance scenarios were defined with the use of eight impact categories: land use,nonrenewable energy,global warming potential,aquatic acidification potential,aquatic eutrophication potential,human toxicity potential,terrestrial ecotoxicity potential and carcinogens *** LCA was conducted based on Simapro,using the "IMPACT 2002+ for ULO v2.12/IMPACT 2002+" *** scenarios comprised the two ULO management models currently used in *** first,which is designated in the study,by TTrR scenario and the second,regarded as TsTR *** LCA results showed that the re-refine phase,in the TsTR scenario,presents lower impact when compared to the corresponding TTR scenario *** TsTR scenario presented the greatest impacts in seven categories (carcinogens,terrestrial ecotoxicity,land use,eutrophication,global warming,use of nonrenewable energy and acidification),corresponding to about 87.5％ of all the *** the contrary,the TTR scenario presented lower impacts in these seven categories,impacting more on only one category (human toxicity).In relation to transportation,the opposite occurs,transport in the TTR scenario presents a larger contribution,impacting 100％ more than transport in the TsTR *** presence of the transshipment center decreases the amount of re-refining impacts in 87.5％ of the categories in the TTR *** in the TTR scenario contributes relatively more to the fact that

6G networks require ultra-low latency and intelligent resource management in IoT environments. Compute-First Networking (CFN), integrating distributed computing and edge caching, addresses backhaul congestion. This paper proposes CaRL, a DRL-based caching framework using TD3 algorithm. CaRL optimizes cache placement at edge nodes by incorporating real-time network state, content popularity, and resource utilization. Simulations show CaRL improves cache hit ratio, reduces latency, and enhances bandwidth efficiency, and ensures secure caching decisions under dynamic network conditions. Unlike existing methods, CaRL adapts to dynamic network conditions by integrating latency, CPU, and memory metrics, demonstrating scalability and adaptability in CFN-driven 6G environments. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Machine learning applied to forecasting the manufacturing time of new products prototypes and ETO products: An exploratory study

Industry 4.0 is a transformative initiative that integrates various technologies and reshapes industrial processes, production methods, and business models. However, forecasting future events within this paradigm shift presents significant challenges. Predicting the cycle time for new product development (NPD) in a dynamic and competitive environment, especially in a highly globalized market driven by innovation, is crucial. Previous research has shown that prototype manufacturing lead times are key parameters for predicting NPD times-to-market. This study investigates the predictive capabilities of artificial intelligence algorithms in estimating manufacturing lead times under varying part geometries and materials at an aerospace and medical equipment company. By leveraging predictive analysis and machine learning techniques, specifically Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) algorithms, the proposed methodology demonstrates its efficacy and variations. The results show that top-performing models achieve an accuracy rate exceeding 87 % and an average absolute error of less than one day, which have significant practical benefits for project production planners. They can utilize the most popular AI frameworks on easier-to-use programming platforms to estimate the time required to manufacture their prototypes, predict their new product development (NPD) cycle times, and negotiate lead times for in-house and third-party manufacturing more effectively, thereby improving project planning and delivery.
