Herein, we report, for the first time, the reduction reaction kinetics of ciprofloxacin organic molecules based on structural and micromorphological conditions of an electrocatalytic system of Bi05Na05Ba(TiO3)2 (BNT-BT) thin films. XRD analysis showed the coexistence of rhombohedral and tetragonal structures for the BNT-BT thin films annealed at 600, 650, and 700°C, showing that the first one had a greater number of surface defects, which was confirmed by Raman Spectroscopy. Analysis of the 3D micromorphological evaluation showed that an annealing temperature increase from 600 to 700 °C does not induce significant changes in the topographical profile. However, BNT-BT thin films annealed at 600 °C displayed more anisotropic surface microtexture, high spatial complexity, and low spatial frequencies. For the reactive surface of BNT-BT films, the electroanalytical assays showed that electrons from the conduction band are captured by oxygen adsorbed on the film surface, forming superoxide radicals that attack ciprofloxacin molecules, promoting their degradation. The best performance observed for the BNT-BT thin films annealed at 600 ºC is attributed to their unique structural and micromorphological properties compared to the films annealed with higher temperatures. Our results prove that the proposed thin film deposition process is a promising approach for developing new electrocatalytic devices. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Due to their enhanced tribological properties that contribute to an increased useful life of components, martensitic stainless steels are an excellent option for industrial applications such as hydroelectric, petrochemical, civil construction and mineral processing plants. In the present investigation, the erosive wear of AISI 410 martensitic stainless steel is evaluated after thermal treatment by quenching and tempering by mass loss, under erosive attack at 30° and 90° incidence angles, using a self-made jet slurry erosion equipment controlling parameters such as speed, volume of fluid, temperature and concentration of erosive particles of erodent. The characterization of the eroded samples was carried out in terms of the microstructure (SEM) and microhardness as well as the particle size distribution (LG) and morphology of the erodent. It was possible to establish the relationship between the slurry erosive wear and the physical properties inherent of stainless steel for this particular experimental configuration, concluding that the steel presents better resistance to jet slurry erosion wear when compared to austenitic steel commonly used in the industry. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Although numerous drugs are practiced to control malaria and its vectors, more recently, eco-friendly control tools have been proposed to battle its etiologic agents. Thus, using green bionanotechnology approaches, we aimed to synthesize palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) from the macroalgae Sargassum fusiforme (Sf), its potential antiparasitic activity against P. falciparum, as well as its possible cytotoxicity, in HeLa cells. After the biosynthesis of the PdSf NPs, their characterization was carried out by UV-Vis, FESEM, and EDX analyses, and their hydrodynamic size, zeta potential, and surface area were determined. Furthermore, the functional groups of the PdSf NPs were analyzed by FT-IR and GC-MS. While PdSf NPs had an IC of 7.68 μg/mL (Chloroquine (CQ)-s) and 16.42 μg/mL, S. fusiforme extract had an IC of 14.38 μg/mL (CQ-s) and 35.27 μg/mL (CQ-r). With an IC value of 94.49 μg/mL, PdSf NPs exhibited the least toxic effect on the HeLa cells. The Lipinski rule of five and ADMET prediction were used to assess the in silico models of caffeine acid hexoside and quercetin 7-O-hexoside for the presence of drug-like properties. Pathogenic proteins, primarily responsible for motility, binding, and disease-causing, were the target of the structurally based docking studies between plant-derived compounds and pathogenic proteins. Thus, our study pioneered promising results that support the potential antiplasmodial activity of eco-friendly synthesized PdSf NPs using S. fusiforme extract against P. falciparum, opening perspectives for further exploration into the use of these NPs in malaria therapy.

The growing use of synthetic chemical compounds/substances in vector control of mosquitoes, associated with their adverse effects on the environment and non-target organisms, has demanded the development of eco-friendly alternatives. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the larvicidal action of different cellulose microcrystalline (CMs) concentrations and investigate their toxicity mechanisms in Culex quinquefasciatus fourth instar larvae as a model species. Probit analysis revealed that the median lethal concentrations (LC) for 24 h and 36 h exposure were 100 and 58.29 mg/L, respectively. We also showed that such concentrations induced a redox imbalance in the larvae, marked by an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), as well as a reduction in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Furthermore, different alterations in the external morphology of the larvae were associated with the ingestion of CMs. On the other hand, exposure of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to LC24h and LC36h for seven days did not induce any behavioral changes or alterations mutagenic, genotoxic, biochemical, or in the production of cytokines IFN-γ and IL-10. Thus, taken together, our study demonstrates for the first time that the use of CMs can constitute a promising strategy in the control of C. quinquefasciatus larvae, combining insecticidal efficiency with an "eco-friendly" approach in the fight against an important mosquito vector of several human diseases.

Evaluation of service-life prediction model for reinforced concrete structures in chloride-laden environments

Reinforced concrete structures are subjected to several degradation processes that often occur early, especially due to reinforcements corrosion. Therefore, the use of representative models for an accurate service-life prediction of reinforced concrete structures becomes indispensable. Thus, this study is aimed at evaluating the model proposed by Andrade to efficiently predict the chloride penetration in concrete structures. In addition, the input variables of this model, as well as the challenges in obtaining them are analyzed. Andrade’s model was applied in some case studies to verify their efficiency in predicting the chloride penetration in reinforced concrete structures in marine environments. The results indicate that for data with small exposure times, the model yielded similar responses to the chloride penetration in situ, with good results within an error range of 35%, associated with a maximum difference of only 4.6 mm between observed and calculated values. For the data with higher exposure times, the differences were significant, indicating the need for an alteration in order to best determine the increase in surface chloride concentration over time. Thus, it is suggested that the model undergoes modifications, mainly in relation to two fundamental aspects, (i) adopt the growth of the chloride surface concentration over time and (ii) consider the variability of the concrete characteristics and exposure conditions through a probabilistic approach. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents Koch fractal aperture-coupled patch antennas operating in industrial scientific and medical band at 60 GHz (57 GHz to 64 GHz), for on-chip application. This work is the continuation of the development of aperture-coupled antennas with aperture and patch element built in 2 μm-thick aluminum lying on two layers of silicon with a height of 200 μm. The use of Koch fractal allowed the development of aperture-coupled antennas of greater perimeter with more metal in the patch elements, which promoted an increase in the gain. The observed gain for Koch fractal level 2 was of 10.55 dBi, with a bandwidth of 7.23 GHz, covering the ISM 60 GHz Band, and an increase of less than 10% in total patch dimension. For Koch fractal levels 0 (square), a polarization close to circular was achieved, with an axial ratio less than 6 at resonant frequencies. © 2018 IEEE.

Invisible microplastics (MP) have become a significant problem worldwide in recent years. Although many studies have highlighted the sources, effects, and fate of MPs pollution on various ecosystems in developed countries, there is limited information on MPs in the marine ecosystem along the northeastern coast of the Bay of Bengal (BoB). Coastal ecosystems along the BoB coasts are critical to a biodiverse ecology that supports human survival and resource extraction. However, the multi-environmental hotspots, ecotoxicity effects, transport mechanisms, fates, and intervention measures to control MP pollution initiatives along the BoB coasts have received little attention. Therefore, this review aims to highlight the multi-environmental hotspots, ecotoxicity effects, sources, fates, and intervention measures of MP in the northeastern BoB to understand how MP spreads in the nearshore marine ecosystem. This study critically evaluates the hotspots and ecotoxic effects of pollution from MP on the coastal multi-environment, e.g., soil, sediment, salt, water, and fish, as well as current intervention measures and additional mitigation recommendations. This study identified the northeastern part of the BoB as a hotspot for MP. In addition, the transport mechanisms and fate of MP in different environmental compartments are highlighted, as are research gaps and potential future research areas. Research on the ecotoxic effects of MP on BoB marine ecosystems must be a top priority, given the increasing use of plastics and the presence of significant marine products worldwide. The knowledge gained from this study would inform decision-makers and stakeholders in a way that could reduce the impact of the legacy of micro- and nanoplastics in the area. This study also proposes structural and non-structural measures to mitigate the effects of MPs and promote sustainable management.

Composites based on poly (trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) blend with maleic anhydride grafted PTT (PTT-g-MA) as a compatibilizer and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcers were prepared via melt-mixing, and the mechanical, electrical, and barrier properties of the as-fabricated composites were evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of the cross-section of the composites after tensile test showed improved phase stability in the presence of the compatibilizer PTT-g-MA. The toughness of the composites was also improved with the addition of the compatibilizer and CNTs. Electrical conductivity tests were carried out and the results showed that CNT-reinforced composite exhibited significantly increased conductivity. Since barrier properties are very sensitive to structural changes, the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the composites was measured and the results showed that the composites possess a much high oxygen barrier compared to that of the neat PTT or ABS. © 2019 Kingfa SCI. & TECH. Bioactivity, Efficacy, and Safety of a Wound Healing Ointment With Medicinal Plant Bioactives: In Vitro and In Vivo Preclinical Evaluations

Chronic wounds have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life, necessitating the management of pain, infection, bleeding, and emotional challenges. Debridement, which involves the removal of nonviable tissue, is crucial for promoting wound healing. In addition to surgical methods, cost-effective alternatives such as local solutions and ointments with biological properties have been explored. The use of natural compounds with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and collagen-synthesizing abilities holds promise for wound healing. This in vitro and in vivo preclinical study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of a wound healing ointment containing bioactive ingredients derived from medicinal plants (extracts, essential oils, and vegetable oils). The chemical composition of the ointment was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to gain insights into its synergistic action. Preclinical tests were conducted following standardized protocols. FTIR analysis revealed similarities between the product’s spectrum and that of bioactive compounds. The in vitro tests demonstrated that all formulations of the ointment induced no cell death, DNA damage, or acute toxicity in cell cultures (p < 0.05). No lethal dose was observed, indicating the safety of the ointment at all concentrations. The ointment also stimulated a notably more organized, significantly higher collagen production compared to control groups (p < 0.05). In vivo preclinical analyses also demonstrated no adverse responses being effective in the healing process compared to the control group (silver sulfadiazine) in terms of wound contraction and ulcer re-epithelization (p < 0.05). Significantly higher means of wound contraction were observed in the groups treated with the bioactive-containing ointment when compared to both the positive control group (sulfadiazine) and the control untreated groups (p < 0.05).
