In the contemporary digital era, individuals face an overwhelming challenge of searching for personalized content from a seemingly infinite pool of available options such as books, videos, articles, and movies. Simultaneously, digital content providers strive to attract and retain as many users on their platforms as possible for extended periods. This has led to the evolution of recommender systems, which aim to enhance user engagement and satisfaction by recommending content based on their preferences and interests. These systems employ sophisticated algorithms and data mining techniques to analyze user behavior and feedback, enabling them to make personalized recommendations to users, thereby improving their overall experience. In this paper, an investigation is conducted in which different models in machine learning with their combinations are evaluated to evaluate which model could give the best accuracy with actual ratings given by users. The models used are Lasso regression, XGBoost, K-nearest neighbor, surprise baseline only, SVD, SVDpp, and their combinations. The proposed ensembled model of XGBoost + surprise baseline + surprise KNN baseline + SVD + SVDpp, with the minimum value of RMSE as 1.111410 and MAPE value as 39.261054, is our best model and can serve as a reference for any future recommender system. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

The use of educational technologies is an important part of the learning process. The development of educational apps and software is one of the pillars of this evolution in teaching. Material selection is one of the most important subjects in professional engineering education. Regarding materials used to manufacture products, the stainless steels are the most commonly used materials after traditional steels. In the industrial environment, fatigue, corrosion-fatigue, and stress corrosion cracking are three very important considerations in the selection of materials. This study evaluates the usability of educational software developed in Java using object-oriented programming using the System Usability Scale and compares it with results obtained from other educational technologies. © The Author(s) 2024.

NaNbO3 doped with Zn (0.00, 0.02, and 0.05 mmol) was synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Photocatalytic and antibacterial activities were investigated. X-ray diffraction revealed the coexistence of two orthorhombic symmetries (P21ma and Pbma), with doping promoting a progressive increase in the Pbma fraction. All samples exhibited a fiber-like shape (diameter of ∼200 nm), which remained unchanged with doping. The low Zn content (0.02 mmol) reduced the band gap energy from 3.08 to 2.95 eV. As a result, this sample exhibited superior photocatalytic activity, achieving 100 % RhB dye degradation within 45 min, under UV light. Scavenger tests revealed that hydroxyl radicals, holes, and superoxide radical anions were the main active species involved in the photocatalytic reaction. Additionally, the photocatalyst demonstrated excellent recyclability over three consecutive cycles. Pure NaNbO3 exhibited strong antibacterial activity, completely inhibiting the growth of S. aureus, E. coli, and K. pneumoniae at the tested concentrations. Although the Zn-doped sample also demonstrated antibacterial action, the response was concentration-dependent. This study is the first report on Zn doping in NaNbO3, as well as the first investigation of its antibacterial activity against K. pneumoniae and S. aureus. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Grape processing generates residues rich in bioactive compounds with potential application in the meat ***,these substances are unstable and needs to be treated to allow their action during the processing and storage of meat *** this sense,a phenolic-rich extract from grape pomace was microencapsulated and evaluated for its potential to inhibit the oxidative process in raw and precooked beef burgers during cold *** hamburger formulations containing lyophilized extract(LEB),microencapsulated extract(MEB)and synthetic antioxidant sodium erythorbate(SEB)were prepared,pre-cooked,and evaluated for lipid and protein *** microencapsulation,with 95.0%efficiency,provided a material with a crystalline structure,rich in phenolics and with high antioxidant potential,showing 377.4±0.01,1768.1±0.07 and 1185.0±0.20μmol TEAC.100 g^(−1) for DPPH,ABTS and FRAP,*** values of malonaldehyde were found in LEB and MEB(2.9±0.3 and 1.4±0.5 mg ***^(−1),respectively)at the end of storage,with emphasis on for the hamburgers that received the microencapsulated *** behavior was observed for the analysis of carbonyl compounds,with values of 11.1±1.1,8.7±1.4 and 6.8±1.0 nM ***^(−1) in SEB,LEB and MEB,***,the freeze-dried and microencapsulated grape extracts showed superior results when compared to the synthetic antioxidant,increasing the oxidative stability of hamburgers,and avoiding significant color changes during the cold *** results indicate the high potential of the microencapsulated material to be used as a natural antioxidant in the meat industry.

This study investigated the action of proteolytic enzymes in the production of goat viscera hydrolysates,and their flavoring *** study focus the production of flavor precursor molecules and the formation of volatile compounds resulting from four hydrolysis treatments:HA-Alcalase®,HF-Flavourzyme®,HN-Neutrase®,and HFN-Flavourzyme® and Neutrase®.The highest degree of hydrolysis (26.74%),number (23 volatiles) and concentration of volatile compounds (274.0 μg/L) were obtained with the action of *** main classes of volatile compounds identified in hydrolysates included acids,aldehydes,pyrazines,terpenes and Streacker *** acids,sugars and fatty acids were identified with higher concentrations in HF and HFN hydrolysates due to the low participation of these precursors in the formation of volatile ***,the use of Alcalase in the proteolysis of goat viscera stood out compared to other enzymes,providing impacting aroma compounds,such as pyrazines,for meat flavor.

The rapid growing application of language models (LLMs) in education offers exciting prospects for personalized learning and interactive experiences. However, a critical challenge emerges - the risk of "hallucinations," where LLMs generate factually incorrect or misleading information. This paper proposes Comparative and Cross-Verification Prompting (CCVP), a novel technique specifically designed to mitigate hallucinations in educational LLMs. CCVP leverages the strengths of multiple LLMs, a Principal Language Model (PLM) and Auxiliary Language Models (ALMs), to verify the accuracy and educational relevance of the PLM's response to a prompt. Through a series of prompts and assessments, CCVP harnesses the diverse perspectives of various LLMs and incorporates human expertise for intricate cases. This method addresses the limitations of relying on a single model and fosters critical thinking skills in learners within the educational context. We detail the CCVP approach with examples specifically applicable to educational settings, such as geography. We also discuss its strengths and limitations, including computational cost, data reliance, and ethical considerations. We highlight its potential applications in educational disciplines, including fact-checking content, detecting bias, and promoting responsible LLM use. CCVP presents a promising avenue for ensuring the accuracy and trustworthiness of LLM-generated educational content. Further research and development will refine its scalability, address potential biases, and solidify its position as a vital tool for harnessing the power of LLMs while fostering responsible knowledge dissemination in education.

This study aimed to evaluate the biological activity of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) essential oil and clove extracts, obtained by hydrodistillation, maceration, and ultrasound-assisted extraction. E. coli, L. monocytogenes, S. enteritidis, and S. aureus strains were used to determine the biological activity by the formation of inhibition zones. The chemical profile of the extracts was analyzed in a liquid-phase chromatograph. The ultrasound-assisted essential oils and extracts exhibited biological activity at the concentration of 100 µL/mL, with the highest inhibition halos observed for all strains studied. The essential oil presented greater inhibition for the concentration of 50 µL/mL. The chemical profile analysis demonstrated the presence of groups of gallic acid compounds, flavones, and their isomers. The total phenolics contents ranged from 0.101 and 0.290 mg GAE/g, with the highest values for the ultrasound-assisted extracts. The results of DPPH varied from 8.15 to 65.24%, with an emphasis on ultrasound-assisted essential oil and extracts. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Massive plywood panels and manufacturers: a comprehensive systematic literature review and case study

Massive timber is a category of heavy green engineered products, manufactured from glued or glued-free processes, to be used in more predictable structural performance in industrialized walls, floors and frames. Massive plywood panel emerges as a novelty for mass timber construction and, therefore, little information is scientifically available. Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal 9: ‘Industry, innovation and infrastructures’, this study aims to verify this literature gap and raise topics regarding massive plywood panels using a structured systematic review literature. From bibliometric analysis, 12 journal papers, 10 conference papers and an editorial were prospected using Scopus and Web of science databases. A predominance of studies from English language nations was confirmed. Seismic and monotonic performance of massive plywood are frequent topics in these investigations, whose results have indicated a promising scenario for construction. As no study on industry is available, a case study on massive plywood was sequentially developed to discuss features of commercial panels and perspectives of respective global industry. The North American Freres Engineered Wood and Finnish Metsä Wood are the only active manufacturers, and their massive plywood panels have been manufactured from modern production technologies and environmentally certified practices to be applied in low- and high-rise industrialized buildings.

The manufacture of goat Coalho cheese has become a potential mechanism for market expansion and *** study aimed to evaluate the influence of marination in red wine on the quality,safety,and stability of goat Coalho cheese produced in the Brazilian semi-arid *** were immersed in red wine at 6±1℃ for seven *** MC(marinated cheese)and CC(control cheese)were characterized during 28 days of storage(4±1℃).At the initial time(day zero),an irregular,porous,and spongy surface related to the moisture,fat globules,and protein network was observed on CC and MC,which had a similar fatty acid profile(17 saturated fatty acids,9 monounsaturated fatty acids,and 8 polyunsaturated fatty acids).The marination resulted in lower pH,greater hardness and chewiness,and less Na in the matrix(CC-253.12 mg.100 g^(-1);MC-129.02 mg.100 g^(-1)).Over 28 days,marination delayed MC degradation rates(lipid oxidation and proteolysis),with greater pro-tection against free radicals,a higher amount of total phenolic compounds,and antioxidant *** re-sults indicated a positive effect of wine marination on the physicochemical parameters of goat Coalho cheese,improving the quality,safety,and stability.

Cyclic thermal treatment parameters of bagasse particle reinforced epoxy bio-composites for sustainable applications

The demand for sustainable, high-performance materials has led to increased interest in bio-based composites. However, optimizing the mechanical properties of such materials for engineering applications remains a challenge. This study addresses this gap by developing and characterizing an epoxy-based biocomposite reinforced with sugarcane bagasse particles, focusing on the influence of cyclic thermal treatment on its properties. The bagasse particles were chemically treated with 1 M NaOH to remove impurities, improve interfacial bonding with the epoxy matrix, and enhance the overall composite performance. The treated particles j were pulverized to 470 µm and incorporated into the epoxy matrix (0–20 wt%) using the hand layup method. The composites were divided into untreated and thermally treated groups, with the latter subjected to cyclic thermal treatment (100 °C for 3 h over 7 days). Mechanical, wear, and water absorption properties were evaluated, while fractured surface morphologies were analyzed using SEM. Results revealed that cyclic thermal treatment significantly enhanced the composites’ performance, with the 15 wt% heat-treated composite showing optimal properties: density of 1.102 g/cm3, flexural strength of 29.13 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 103.50 MPa, impact strength of 3.49 kJ/m2, hardness of 64.70 HS, and wear indices of 0.034 mg. These findings demonstrate that alkali treatment and cyclic thermal treatment synergistically enhance the performance of bio-composites, making them suitable for diverse applications, including automotive, aerospace, and other engineering fields.
