Although the ecotoxicity of carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) is known, the potential effect of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on edaphic organisms has not been evaluated. Thus, we aimed at the ecotoxicity of CNFs (at 10 and 100 mg/kg) in Lumbricus terrestris earthworms naturally infected with Monocystis sp. After 28 days of exposure, treatments did not affect the survival rate. However, we observed a significant loss of body biomass, and Monocystis sp. infection in seminal vesicles was potentiated by exposure to CNFs. Earthworms exposed to CNFs showed a redox imbalance in the seminal vesicle, muscle, and intestine and an alteration in nitric oxide production in these organs. In muscles, we also noticed a significant reduction in AChE activity in earthworms exposed to CNFs. The histopathological analyses revealed the treatments' significant effect on the structures of the different evaluated tissues. Although we did not notice a concentration-response for several of the biomarkers, when taken together and after the application of IBRv2 and principal component analysis (PCA), we noticed that the response of earthworms to CNFs at 100 mg/kg showed a more significant deviation from the unexposed group. This was mainly determined by inhibiting antioxidant activity in the seminal vesicle, biochemical biomarkers assessed in muscle and intestine, and histomorphometric muscle biomarkers from earthworms exposed to CNFs at 100 mg/kg. Thus, we demonstrate that CNFs increase the parasite load of Monocystis sp. of adult L. terrestris earthworms and induce biochemical changes and histopathological changes, especially at 100 mg/kg. Our results point to the additional impact these nanomaterials can have on the health of earthworms, signaling the need for greater attention to their disposal and ecotoxicological effects on soil organisms. © 2023, The Authors. The Brazilian Equatorial Margin (BEM) encompasses a WNW to NW-trending segment along which a complex set of sedimentary basins were developed from the Neobarremian to the Albian. Recent discoveries of hydrocarbon reserves in the continental margins of Ghana, in Africa, and Guyanas/Suriname, in South America, have heightened interest in studying the Equatorial Atlantic margins. In this context, it is crucial to understand better the mechanisms that led to the formation of these basins, whose exploratory potential is still open. Most studies on the BEM either focus on small areas without comparing results to their African counterparts or involve regional reconstructions that overlook hyperextended crustal sections, thus hindering a more accurate fit. This work aims to define the deep crustal architecture of the BEM and delineate the transition from continental to strictly oceanic crust based on the merging of gravimetric, magnetic, and multichannel 2D seismic reflection data from various sources, types, and resolutions. Our findings have allowed us to categorize the BEM into four domains: proximal (PD), necking zone (NZ), ocean-continent transition (OCT), and oceanic crust (OC). These domains feature a predominance of Aptian to Albian NW-SE normal and oblique-slip faults, as well as NE-SW folds and thrusts, all of which are associated with E-W strike-slip or oblique-slip faults. The nature of the ocean-continent transition zone can vary from gradual to abrupt, depending on its location and the dominant structural style in each margin segment. The oceanward limit of the OCT domain is marked by a continent-ocean boundary (COB) that runs orthogonal to the present-day oceanic fracture zones, unlike what has been reported in other studies. Our defined boundaries ensured a good fit between the continental crusts of the BEM and the African Equatorial Margin (AEM) during the Cenomanian period. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We aimed to evaluate the possible effects of exposure of Salvinia auriculata, for 28 days, to different concentrations of polyethylene MPs (PE MPs) using different biomarkers. Our data indicated that exposure to PE MPs caused alterations in plant growth/development, as well as lower dispersion of individuals in the experimental units. Plants exposed to PE MPs also showed lower epidermal thickness and a longer length of the central leaf vein and vascular bundle area. Ultrastructural analyses of S. auriculata exposed to MPs revealed rupture of some epidermal cells and trichomes on the adaxial and abaxial, leaf necrosis, and chlorosis. In the "roots", we observed dehydrated filamentous structures with evident deformations in plants exposed to the pollutants. Both on the abaxial leaf face and on the "roots", the adherence of PE MPs was observed. Furthermore, exposure to PE MPs induced lower chlorophyll content, cell membrane damage, and redox imbalance, marked by reduced catalase and superoxide dismutase activity and increased production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species as well as malondialdehyde. Therefore, our study sheds light on how PE MPs can affect S. auriculata and reinforces that putting these pollutants in freshwater environments is hazardous from an ecotoxicological point of view. © 2022, The Authors. The COVID-19 era has triggered profound effects on normal human life and the environment, as well as freshwater ecosystems worldwide. Despite the numerous influences, a strict COVID-19 lockdown might lead to improving the surface water quality and thus provide an unprecedented opportunity to restore the degraded freshwater resource. Thus, we intend to investigate the spatiotemporal water quality and preliminary health risks of heavy metals (loids) in the Karatoya River basin (KRB), a tropical urban river in Bangladesh. A total of 70 water samples were collected from 35 stations in KRB in 2019 and 2022 during the dry season. The results showed that the concentrations of Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and Cr were significantly reduced by 89.3–99.7% during the post-lockdown period (p © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Concerning water resources, several ordinances and legislation determine standards and conditions for the discharge of effluents into water bodies. However, several contaminants are not covered by these guidelines because they are found in low concentrations and due to little knowledge of their long-term effects. These contaminants are called emergents, and this category includes drugs, such as anti-inflammatory drugs. The electrocoagulation process associated with advanced oxidation comes up as an alternative to conventional effluent treatment processes, and the objective of this work was to evaluate this process using scrap iron as sacrificial electrodes in the treatment of synthetic effluents containing Ibuprofen. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to quantify the drug in synthetic effluents. The CCRD 24 was used in an experimental design, having as independent variables evaluated the concentration of contaminants, applied current, the concentration of the primary oxidizing agent H2O2 and the reaction time. The optimized conditions determined by statistical analysis were drug concentration of 5 mg.L-1, H2O2 concentration of 200 mg.L-1, current of 5 A and 150 min. The removals obtained under these conditions were higher than 92% in the aqueous phase, showing that ECP technique has the potential to treat contaminants such as drugs present in effluents and waters. © 2021, CC BY.

Natural products are in the spotlight of novelty for obtaining ecofriendly agents against pests. In this context, searching for new antifungal alternatives for control of grain microorganism is recommended. In this paper we show a brief description of nanoemulsification as a valuable tool for modification of essential oil properties. Low energy method was used for the preparation of Eugenia sulcata nanoemulsion. This approach was also used for the preparation of this type of colloid with β-caryophyllene, the main component of this essential oil. Especially regarding Aspegillus parasiticus, it was possible to observe increment of bioactivity by nanoemulsification of E. sulcata. This short communication contributes to better knowledge of mechanism in the rationalization of antifungal nanoemulsions based in essential oil and its main constituents, providing relevant insights that can be used for other complex volatile mixtures. © 2024 The Authors
