The need for higher propulsive and thermal efficiency in high temperature equipment has induced the search for materials that can withstand such harsh operating conditions. Within this group, the Nb-Si alloy system offers an attractive set of properties although they still present a challenge regarding the effects of oxygen. To address the role of processing environment on microstructure and oxidation performance of a Nb-Si multilayer, a powder mixture (Nb37wt%Si) were deposited under an argon atmosphere and in air. NbSi2 and Nb5Si3 were identified in multilayers processed with Nb37wt%Si mixture. The argon atmosphere accounts for changes in phase morphology and also for the enhanced oxidation resistance. This behavior can be accounted for by the high solubility of oxygen on silicides, that contributes to entrap oxygen in multilayers processed in air compromising oxidation performance. © 2019 MS&T19®

We aimed at the ecotoxicity of CNFs (at 10 and 100 mg/kg) in Lumbricus terrestris earthworms naturally infected with Monocystis sp. After 28-d of exposure, treatments did not affect the survival rate. However, we observed a significant loss of body biomass, and Monocystis sp. infection in seminal vesicles was potentiated by exposure to CNFs. Earthworms exposed to CNFs showed a redox imbalance in the seminal vesicle, muscle, and intestine and an alteration in nitric oxide production in these organs. In muscles, we also noticed a significant reduction in AChE activity in earthworms exposed to CNFs. The histopathological analyses revealed the treatments' significant effect on the structures of the different evaluated tissues. When taken together and after applying IBRv2 and PCA, we noticed that the response of earthworms to CNFs at 100 mg/kg showed a more significant deviation from the unexposed group. Thus, we demonstrate that CNFs increase the parasite load of Monocystis sp. of adult L. terrestris earthworms and induce biochemical changes and histopathological changes, especially at 100 mg/kg. Our results point to the additional impact these nanomaterials can have on the health of earthworms, signaling the need for greater attention to their disposal and ecotoxicological effects on soil organisms. © 2023, The Authors. Although the ecotoxicity of carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) is known, the potential effect of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on edaphic organisms has not been evaluated. Thus, we aimed at the ecotoxicity of CNFs (at 10 and 100 mg/kg) in Lumbricus terrestris earthworms naturally infected with Monocystis sp. After 28 days of exposure, treatments did not affect the survival rate. However, we observed a significant loss of body biomass, and Monocystis sp. infection in seminal vesicles was potentiated by exposure to CNFs. Earthworms exposed to CNFs showed a redox imbalance in the seminal vesicle, muscle, and intestine and an alteration in nitric oxide production in these organs. Although we did not notice a concentration-response for several of the biomarkers, when taken together and after the application of IBRv2 and principal component analysis (PCA), we noticed that the response of earthworms to CNFs at 100 mg/kg showed a more significant deviation from the unexposed group. This was mainly determined by inhibiting antioxidant activity in the seminal vesicle, biochemical biomarkers assessed in muscle and intestine, and histomorphometric muscle biomarkers from earthworms exposed to CNFs at 100 mg/kg. Thus, we demonstrate that CNFs increase the parasite load of Monocystis sp. of adult L. terrestris earthworms and induce biochemical changes and histopathological changes, especially at 100 mg/kg. Our results point to the additional impact these nanomaterials can have on the health of earthworms, signaling the need for greater attention to their disposal and ecotoxicological effects on soil organisms. © 2023, The Authors. The development and testing of new sorbents for the efficient removal of CO₂ from flue gases is essential. Encapsulated room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) can be potentially employed in CO₂ capture. In this work, we report the preparation and characterization of encapsulated imidazolium-based fluorinated RTILs for CO₂ capture. [Emim][TF₂N], [Bmim][TF₂N], and [Hmim][TF₂N] RTILS were encapsulated in polysulfone (PSF) using an emulsification method and characterized by several techniques. The pressure-decay technique was used to assess the CO₂ sorption capacity and reusability. Encapsulated RTILs showed improved utility for CO₂ capture processes compared with non-encapsulated RTILs, including higher CO₂ sorption capacity and faster CO₂ sorption/desorption. The CO₂ absorption/desorption cycles demonstrated the reuse capacity of all microcapsules under mild conditions. The highest CO₂ sorption capacity was noted for encapsulated [Emim][TF₂N] (39.5 mg CO₂ g⁻¹ at 298.15 K and 1 bar;62.7 mg CO₂ g⁻¹ at 298.15 K and 10 bar). It is worth emphasizing that the encapsulated [Emim][TF₂N] contained a lower ionic liquid (IL) content (37.5. ± 0.6) when compared to other encapsulated samples. Moreover, encapsulated [Emim][TF₂N] presented a higher CO₂ affinity than the encapsulated ILs reported in the literature. © 2021

The increasing life expectancy, evolving patient demographics, and advancements in implant technologies underscore the need for better biomaterials, particularly alloys with superior mechanical and chemical biocompatibility for biomedical applications like orthopedic implants. β-Ti alloys are promising due to their mechanical properties, including an elasticity modulus (E) of 44–80 GPa, and chemical/biological attributes such as corrosion resistance and osseointegration. This work developed equimassic multicomponent high (HEA) and medium entropy (MEA) β-Ti alloys within the ternary Ti-33Nb-33Zr, quaternary Ti-25Nb-25Zr-25Ta, and quinary Ti-20Nb-20Zr-20Ta-20Mo weight percent systems to achieve an optimized elastic modulus. The study analyzed β-Ti alloys with different β-stabilizing elements, leading to varying entropy levels, and established a relationship between microstructure and properties for enhanced implant efficacy. For the high entropy quinary alloy, increasing the number of alloying elements decreases lattice parameters, increasing the elastic modulus and Vickers microhardness (HV), from 247 HV for the ternary alloy to 453 HV for the quinary alloy. This corresponds to an increase in the entropy degree from 1.041 R to 1.523 R. While a higher entropy degree hinders a low elastic modulus, medium entropy β-Ti alloys such as the quaternary β-Ti-25Nb-25Zr-25Ta alloy achieve an elastic modulus as low as 73 GPa.

Environmental Assessment of Used Lubricant Oil in Southern Brazilian Region

Brazil is currently the sixth world largest lubricating oil consumer,as a result,the sixth largest used lubricating oil (ULO) producer,with an annual ULO production of about one million ***,due to the environmental consequences and also to the large amount of this waste,it becomes necessary to quantify and qualify the impacts resulting from ULO management *** study evaluates,through the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology,the current ULO management system in southern *** comparisons regarding the environmental performance scenarios were defined with the use of eight impact categories: land use,nonrenewable energy,global warming potential,aquatic acidification potential,aquatic eutrophication potential,human toxicity potential,terrestrial ecotoxicity potential and carcinogens *** LCA was conducted based on Simapro,using the "IMPACT 2002+ for ULO v2.12/IMPACT 2002+" *** scenarios comprised the two ULO management models currently used in *** first,which is designated in the study,by TTrR scenario and the second,regarded as TsTR *** LCA results showed that the re-refine phase,in the TsTR scenario,presents lower impact when compared to the corresponding TTR scenario *** TsTR scenario presented the greatest impacts in seven categories (carcinogens,terrestrial ecotoxicity,land use,eutrophication,global warming,use of nonrenewable energy and acidification),corresponding to about 87.5％ of all the *** the contrary,the TTR scenario presented lower impacts in these seven categories,impacting more on only one category (human toxicity).In relation to transportation,the opposite occurs,transport in the TTR scenario presents a larger contribution,impacting 100％ more than transport in the TsTR *** presence of the transshipment center decreases the amount of re-refining impacts in 87.5％ of the categories in the TTR *** in the TTR scenario contributes relatively more to the fact that

Zinc oxide, a well-known inorganic metal oxide in nanoparticle form, has outstanding antibacterial properties. In this work, the authors focus on determining ZnO nanoparticles’ structural, optical, and antibacterial activity. A simple soft chemical route synthesizes C-ZnO nanoparticles chemically, while the green synthesis method is used to prepare G-ZnO nanoparticles. Ocimum tenuiflorum leaf extract was used to prepare G-ZnO nanopowders. These samples are investigated and compared in terms of their structural, morphological, optical, and antibacterial properties. According to XRD investigations, the synthesized ZnO nanopowders possess a hexagonal structure. The particle size of G-ZnO is smaller than that of C-ZnO nanoparticles. The XPS result revealed the binding and interactions between molecules. The FTIR study confirmed the presence of molecules and their vibrations. UV-vis-DRS spectroscopy was used to investigate optical properties such as reflectance and band gap. The grain size of the G-ZnO nanopowders was decreased, and oxygen vacancy was produced. The antibacterial efficiency of plant extracts against two different bacterial strains, S. aureus (Gram-positive) and *** (Gram-negative), has been studied and reported. Copyright © 2022 K. To integrate the multiple variables, traditional methodologies suggest modelling the cross variograms and co-simulation using the Linear Model of Coregionalization (LMC), that is difficult task. This framework combines two approaches: Bayesian Updating and Sequential Gaussian Simulation considering all information regarding the relationship of the multiple variables without modelling the LMC. Firstly, at each soft data location, hard and soft data were incorporated using Bayesian Updating, which considers multivariate correlations between variables, to build a conditional distribution. Secondly, n-possible values are drawn from these conditional distributions and imputed as hard data. Next, Sequential Gaussian Simulation was performed to complete all the grid nodes using the original and pre-viously simulated hard data. The simulated models were compared with the models obtained by Sequential Gaussian Simulation (SGS) using only the original hard data. The results show the soft data addition improve the accuracy of the models once an appropriate methodology is used to incorporate them. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Rock cores from drilling works in mineral research activities are the main ore modeling information and consume most of the budget. Data spacing should be optimized to reduce uncertainties in the geologic model and mineral resource inventory. This paper investigates how the uncertainty of the mineral resources is influenced by distinct data spacings through a case study on a bauxite mineralization in Brazilian Amazon plateau. The results showed that the uncertainty of the mineral resource decreases as the data spacing decreases. Depending on an acceptable uncertainty level, wider data spacings may be selected. This optimal drilling data spacing may be defined using the uncertainty in the mineral resource estimation, which is demonstrated in this case study. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
