This work studies the temperature–dependent behavior of nano-sized pure WO 3 and bismuth-doped with varying molar concentrations of bismuth (0%, 1%, and 2%) synthesized using the hydrothermal method. Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed spindle-like agglomerates on the surface of the samples. X–ray diffraction analysis confirms the synthesized samples' hexagonal phase (h–WO 3 ). Raman and Fourier–transform infrared spectroscopy analyses corroborated the X–ray diffraction results and showed variations in peak positions as the dopant concentration increased. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that the sample WO 3 doped with 1%Bi exhibited the lowest energy gap value among all the samples. The results Temperature–dependent Raman and X–ray diffraction showed an irreversible phase transition at 713–803 K for pure h–WO 3 . However, this transition did not occur for samples doped with 1% and 2% bismuth, Thus, indicating improved thermal stability when Bi ions are introduced into the WO 3 structure. Therefore, shows that these materials can be used application under extreme temperatures.

Effects of TiO 2 waste on the formation of clinker phases and mechanical performance and hydration of Portand cement

The incorporation of different levels of UOW into Portland clinker raw meals and its effects on the clinker and cement properties were evaluated. Clinkers were produced and characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and optical microscopy; the cements were produced and physically characterized. Finally, pastes were produced and analyzed using isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetry, XRD, and compressive strength tests. UOW, when added up to 1.29% in Portland clinker raw meal, acts as a mineralizer, increasing the content of alite by 6.44%. The incorporation of UOW reduces the hydration rate in the first days owing to the increase in the size of the alite crystals and delays the point of sulfate depletion due to the increase in the SO 3 content of the clinkers. Owing to the higher content of alite formed, the cement produced from the raw meal with 1.29% of UOW presents the highest early mechanical strength (up to 7 days).

Sublethal Doses of Insecticides Affect the Fecundity and Fertility of the <i>Chrysodeixis includens</i>?

The objective was to determine lethal concentrations and to evaluate the effects of sublethal doses of insecticides on Chrysodeixis includens under laboratory conditions. The standard population of C. includens was kept on artificial diet under controlled conditions (25°C ± 5°C, 60% ± 10 RU, 12:12 h). The active principles used were B. thuringiensis, Indoxacarb and Teflubenzuron. The CL25 and LC50 obtained from dose response curve (estimated from eight concentrations of each active principle) were diluted in water and applied to the back of third instar caterpillars and compared to the control (water). The insecticides used showed lethal and sublethal effects in C. includens. Bacillus thuringiensis was 6.21 and 2.79 times more toxic to soybean looper when compared to the products Indoxacarb and Teflubenzuron, respectively. Insecticides applied to the caterpillars reduced survival and affected the biomass gain with increased larvae and pupae longevity, with a significant reduction in fertility (40%) and fecundity (94.97%) in adults. In the present study it was observed that both survival and larval biomass gain have a direct effect on fecundity and fertility, respectively. Therefore the active ingredients Indoxacarb, Teflubenzuron and B. thuringiensis can be used in rotation as a tool in the C. includens.

Evaluation of phase formation and physical-mechanical properties of Portland cements produced with civil construction waste

Cement is the most widely used building material worldwide. Its production demands a large amount of natural resources, in addition to high energy consumption. Thus, the cement industry has been looking for solutions that effectively reduce the use of these resources as well as greenhouse gas emissions. This research aims to show the technical feasibility of incorporating civil construction waste (CCW) in the production of Portland cement. To this purpose, the physicochemical characterization of the raw materials used was carried out, dosage and manufacture of the raw mix, which were calcined at 1450 °C. Clinkers were characterized mineralogically, by means of XRD, to verify the formation of the crystalline phases. Subsequently, the clinkers were ground, resulting in Portland cements, and their physical-mechanical properties were evaluated. The results showed the potential of using CCW as an alternative raw material, since experimental cements presented performance similar to industrial cements used as a reference.

Mosquitoes' current insecticide resistance status in available public health insecticides is a serious threat to mosquito control initiatives. Microbe-based control agents provide an alternative to conventional pesticides and insecticides, as they can be more targeted than synthetic insecticides. The present study was focused on identifying and investigating the mosquitocidal potential of Cladophialophora bantiana, an endophytic fungus isolated from Opuntia ficus-indica. The Cladophialophora species was identified through phylogenetic analysis of the rDNA sequence. The isolated fungus was first evaluated for its potential to produce metabolites against Aedes aegpti and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae in the 1-4th instar. The secondary metabolites of mycelium extract were assessed at various test doses (100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 μg/mL) in independent bioassays for each instar of selected mosquito larvae. After 48 h of exposure, A. aegypti expressed LC values of 13.069, 18.085, 9.554, and 11.717 μg/mL and LC = 25.702, 30.860, 17.275, and 19.601 μg/mL; followed by C. quinquefasciatus LC = 14.467, 11.766, 5.934, and 7.589 μg/mL, and LC = 29.529, 20.767, 11.192, and 13.296 μg/mL. The mean % of ovicidal bioassay was recorded 120 h after exposure. The hatchability (%) was proportional to mycelia metabolite concentration. The enzymatic level of acetylcholinesterase in fungal mycelial metabolite treated 4th instar larvae indicated a dose-dependent pattern. The GC-MS profile of C. bantiana extracts identified five of the most abundant compounds, namely cyclobutane, trans-3-undecene-1,5-diyne, 1-bromo-2-chloro, propane, 1,2,3-trichloro-2-methyl-, 5,5,10,10-tetrachlorotricyclo, and phenol, which had the killing effect in mosquitoes. Furthermore, the C. bantiana fungus ethyl acetate extracts had a strong larvicidal action on A. aegypti and C. quinquefasciatus. Finally, the toxicity test on zebrafish embryos revealed the induction of malformations only at concentrations above 1 m

Fabrication and characterization of nano-zirconia produced by aqueous-based tape casting

In this work, aqueous-based tape casting was used to produce nano-zirconia substrates. Rheological properties of the slurries were measured at room temperature. The acrylic-based suspensions showed a pseudoplastic behavior and remained stable and homogeneous. Warm pressing was used to laminate two or more cast tapes, in order to produce SOFC structures. Strength behavior of the sintered and laminates tapes was also evaluated.

Titanium oxides such as rutile and anatase, are materials that stand out for exhibiting properties that act in biomedical and photocatalytic applications, among others. It is extreme importance to idealize new techniques that produce such compounds, being indispensable the improvement of characterizations for these materials. For this purpose, titanium comercially pure (CP) grade II cylindrical samples were oxidized ionically using titanium cage electric shields, oxidized at 350 ° C in 3 and 8 hours. Through Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction (GIXRD) analysis, was observed on the surface of the treated samples the formation of a TiO2 film with the anatase, rutile and brookite phases, the latter phase cited being difficult to produce in conventional thermochemical treatments. All samples treated showed a significant increase in wettability using distilled water. The higer value was for the sample with a 8 hours treatment time, in which this condition presented phases with greater intensity in the analysis of GIXRD. © 2017 Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos.
