This paper aims to analyze interactive multimedia and visualization techniques for architectural theory publications. Unfortunately, the available literature about multimedia, visualization, hypertext and related systems in this area is not consistent. The paper reviews the features of a research project outcome, which investigates an iconic building of the late 1930's in Brazil. It examines the differences and similarities between a hypertext/multimedia system - a CD-ROM - with a comparable non-hypertext or non-computer product - a book - that deals with a specific subject: Architectural Theory.

The use of underground spaces has been pointed out as an alternative to the growing demand for more areas in cities and the presence of natural light is seen as a strategy for improving the quality of such buildings. Light pipes are one of the technologies capable of conducting light over long distances. However, they require local studies to check the most efficient performance in each geographical location. This paper aims to study the performance of a given light pipe combined with a heliostat device in Porto Alegre, a city in south Brazil. We conducted an experiment in which scale models were used. Different reflexive materials were tested and, as a second step, light pipes combined with the use of a handmade heliostat were verified. At the end, rapid prototyping tools where used to build and test an automatized heliostat. Our results pointed to a great potential for using these technologies in deep environments on cloudless days. However, in overcast weather their efficiency drops considerably, so the use of hybrid systems may be an alternative. Heat load conduction and glaring caused by direct sunlight are some of the main limitations of these systems and must be addressed in future experiments. Copyright © NCEUB 2017.

GIS-Based Methodology for Crash Prediction on Single-Lane Rural Highways

Due to the need to update the current guidelines for highway design to focus on safety, this study sought to build an accident prediction model using a Geographic Information System (GIS) for single-lane rural highways, with a minimum of statistically significant variables, adequate to the Brazilian reality, and improve accident prediction for places with similar characteristics. A database was created to associate the accident records with the geometric parameters of the highway and to fill in the gaps left by the absence of geometric highway plans through geometric reconstitution or semi-automatic extraction of highways using satellite images. The Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) method was applied to estimate the coefficients of the model, assuming negative distribution of the binomial error for the count of observed accidents. The accident frequency and annual average daily traffic (AADT) were analyzed, along with the spatial and geometric characteristics of 215 km of federal single-lane rural highways between 2007 and 2016. The GEE procedure was applied to two models having three variations of distinct homogeneous segmentation, two based on segments and one based on the kernel density estimator. To assess the effect of constant traffic, two more variations of the models using AADT as an offset variable were considered. The predominant correlation structure in the models was the exchangeable. The principal contributing factors for the occurrence of collisions were the radius of the horizontal curve, the grade, segment length, and the AADT. The study produced clear indicators for the design parameters of roadways that influence the safety performance of rural highways.

Aiming to study the temperature field changes, the House VI project was checked. This house is located in Vila37, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a dead-end small street with only one inlet/outlet. In the houses of Vila37, the indoor ventilation is restricted to the facade windows. Giving the impossibility of introducing cross-ventilation in a traditional way, a short wind-catch was previously added with positive results;therefore, simulations with long wind-catch are being carried out. The analysis started by solving the air-circulation problem by using a finite element method and after, with the wind fields added, the heat transfer problem was analysed. The results obtained were evaluated and compared with the previous ones.

This book provides a comprehensive, hands-on approach to bioclimatic building design in Africa. Bioclimatic design is at the core of urban sustainability, and is a critical issue in Africa, where “imported” building typologies are being used at an increasing pace, disregarding the local context and consequently causing damage to the environment, to the economy, and to the culture itself. Contemporary office buildings have been calling attention for intense use of glass on their faç*** way,glazed areas in such buildings may favor the access to natural light and contribute to power generation through photovoltaic ***,the application of STPV(Semi-Transparent Photovoltaic)may interfere with the building’s energy performance and good use of ***,this work aims to assess daylighting and thermoenergetic performances in an office room located in southern Brazil,with different types of STPV applied to the building’s *** study was carried out through computer simulation,integrating software’s Rhinoceros with DIVA plugin and *** have shown that the application of STPV with proper transparency percentage provides access to daylighting and increases visual comfort for occupants,and also contributes to the building’s energy balance,as it may save from 9.6%to 28%in *** use,in the climatic context analyzed,has boosted energy consumption for cooling and for artificial lighting;however,photovoltaic generation was higher and thus compensated for the increase caused by the system.

The dominance of economic values in the tourism development has caused the decline of other important values, thus make the application of sustainability concept is crucial. As part of Indonesia's priority destinations, this concept is also needed to be applied in Samosir Island. In other hand as a tourism destination, a place must have distinctiveness to differentiate it from other places because tourism is fundamentally a recreational product based on place phenomenon. The research is a study of the value of uniqueness on the environmental elements of sustainable tourism in Samosir Island, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The research used mixed methods where questionnaires were distributed to 105 respondents, field observation was conducted, and in-depth interviews were held with six key informants. The result shows that the existence of the traditional building has a great influence towards the physical integrity of the tourist while the diverse cultural activities in the areas required appropriate strategies in enhancing and supporting the environmental elements of sustainable tourism. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Tourism development is needed because tourism can increase an income in a destination. Ecotourism is a new type of tourism that responsible towards nature, community, and the environment. Ecotourism draws more tourist's interest because besides giving natural tourism experience, they can learn to conserve the nature and involve with the community. Aek Nauli Natural Forest has been opened for public since 2011. However, the tourism is not developing despite of its attraction's potential. This research is focusing on natural attraction as one of the elements of tourism attraction. The aim of this research is to find tourist attractions that have the potential to be developed based on ecotourism in Aek Nauli. This research uses a qualitative method by conducting observation and in-depth interview with key respondents. Ecotourism is not only as a tourist activity nowadays, but has become an activity that contains economic elements, as well as efforts to conserve natural resources and the environment. In regional development, ecotourism focuses on the quality of physical components, but the emotion of place attachments are not adequately considered. To find out the emotional of place attachments on ecotourism, this research was conducted in the mangrove ecotourism area with data collection techniques, namely field observations which were then supported by the distribution of questioners to the community (50) and tourists (50). The results of this study are perceptions between tourists and the local community about emotional of place attachments to the Sicanang Mangrove Forest Ecotourism. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
