Phase Unwrapping Algorithm for Distributed Acoustic Sensing Based on Unlimited Sampling and Phase Diversity

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) detects strain on optical fibers over long distances with a typical spatial resolution of a couple of meters and an acquisition rate of up to 100 kHz. DAS is utilized to diagnose events in applications such as pipeline monitoring, seismic detection, structural diagnostics, and sea current observation, offering high precision for complex environments. Given the requirements of these applications, the fidelity of the data from DAS is crucial to obtain the greatest accuracy of the monitored event. However, this equipment is subject to signal distortions due to the effects of noise and the sensor’s dynamic range. To mitigate these effects, this article introduces a new data interpretation methodology based on the unlimited sampling algorithm, which enhances the dynamic range of the sensor during the signal unwrapping process and incorporates phase diversity for noise fading reduction. This work introduces a dataset using the new algorithm compared with the state of the art. The setup follows SEAFOM guidelines using a fiber stretcher to generate signals on the fiber. An improvement of 18.44% in detecting the signal’s fundamental frequency was achieved, and a hyperparameter mapping was conducted to enable future application in systems, where the current standard DAS algorithm fails to resolve signals accurately. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Experimental evaluation of MIMO configurations in indoor visible light communications under the consideration of illumination

Visible light communications (VLC) enable wireless data transmission using existing light-emitting diode (LED) illumination. This experimental study evaluates the performance of multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) configurations in indoor VLC systems by analyzing their impact on both communication and illumination. Various MIMO setups (2 × 2, 3 × 2, and 4 × 2) are compared against single input single output (SISO), and single input multiple outputs (SIMO) schemes, using commercial LED luminaires as transmitters. While the 4 × 2 MIMO configuration demonstrates superior overall performance, intermediate configurations like 3 × 2 or 2 × 2 MIMO offer an attractive trade-off between system complexity and performance enhancement, particularly in scenarios with space or cost constraints. The results show that MIMO configurations significantly outperform SISO systems, achieving reliable communication (BER ≤ 10−3) at practical indoor distances of up to 2 meters while maintaining illumination levels above 300 lux, where conventional SISO setups do not meet these dual requirements. The exponential growth of the number of devices connected to the Internet and the use of IoT applications increases the amount of data exchange over public channels in low-cost and low-power embedded systems. Images are the most widely shared files, and standard symmetric algorithms such as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) are optimized for text but not image encryption. Consequently, new approaches like chaotic encryption have attracted researchers’ interest. Chaotic encryption schemes have been analyzed mostly from a software standpoint, but recent advancements in the field, through the use of discrete chaotic maps, enabled the development of simpler hardware implementations of ciphers with promising reductions in power and cost and increased performance. This work presents the Field-programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation of a simultaneous permutation-diffusion chaotic encryption scheme utilizing a discrete-space chaotic map. The FPGA implementation of the cipher is analyzed considering area, maximum frequency, and power consumption, and comparisons are made with the AES. The proposed algorithm has a satisfactory trade-off between area, power and performance, obtaining a peak throughput 59% higher than state-of-the-art symmetric ciphers in the literature. Thus, the proposed cipher shows that chaotic ciphers are viable for both high-performance and low-power embedded devices. Tests verified the security of the proposed cipher against statistical, differential, brute-force, and chosen plain-text attacks. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

An Ensemble-Based Classifier to Determine the Harmonic Contribution Responsibility Between Utility’s Grid and Microgrids

The integration of nonlinear loads and distributed energy resources in microgrids (MG) has increased the levels of harmonic distortions in distribution feeders. Identifying the responsibility for the harmonic distortions measured at the MG’s point of common coupling (PCC) is essential for managing the power quality. For this purpose, the present paper aims to determine whether the responsibility predominates from the utility’s grid or the MG itself. Thus, an ensemble-based approach was proposed, comparing the behaviour of Random Forest and XGBoost classifiers to identify the side with the predominant harmonic contribution. In order to validate the proposed approach, scenarios were simulated in the IEEE 34-node test feeder using the ATP/ATPDraw software, considering the harmonic sources located at different nodes of the feeder. Three-phase voltage and current signals were acquired at MG’s PCC to train and validate the ensembles. However, a feature extraction stage was performed to obtain time and frequency features used as inputs to the predictive models. The results demonstrated that the proposed approach effectively identified the contribution side, achieving an average F₁-score above 99% for both ensembles, representing a feasible solution for determining the harmonic distortion responsibilities at the MG’s PCC. © 2013 IEEE.

Recess gate etching is a critical technique for achieving enhancement-mode (E-mode) AlGaN/GaN high-electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) because the interface is susceptible to the etching damage. This study fabricates recess gates using the neutral beam etching (NBE) technique. By adjusting the aperture thickness in the NBE apparatus, we simulate both NB-mode and plasma-mode etching. The electrical characteristics of E-mode HEMTs fabricated using these two modes are analyzed and compared through DC, noise, and pulsed IV measurements. The results demonstrate that NB-recessed HEMTs exhibit superior performance. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

Lifetime studies of organic light emitting diodes are necessary to both understand and mitigate causes of degradation. Here, electroluminescence (EL) studies of green organic light-emitting diode (OLED) pixels are measured continuously using three different dc currents over a period of one week, and their slow EL degradation is accurately fit to an analytical expression with only two fit parameters. The slower-than-exponential EL decay is fit to an empirical unified heavy-tail function that can interpolate between power-law algebraic decays (AD) and stretched-exponential decays (SE). Whereas SE and AD are largely indistinguishable down to 50% of the initial luminance, here we report degradation down to 10% of the initial luminance which most closely fits an AD function with remarkable precision over the entire duration of the experiment. All relaxations share the same characteristic exponent β = 0.53 in the power law decay, whereas the characteristic time-scale τ for degradation decreases with a power-law exponent B = 1.9 as the current increases. The high degree of accuracy in the fit allows asymptotic predictions at time scales that are orders of magnitude longer than the duration of the data collection. The voltage across the OLED is simultaneously monitored under constant-current degradation and reveals an early-onset time scale where the voltage reaches a minimum before degradation runoff. © 2025 SPIE.

CNN-based multiplexed optical fiber sensors for multi-load mapping on 2D structures

This paper reports the application of a Convolutional Neural Network specifically designed for one-dimensional optical signal processing to determine the magnitude and position of loads acting on a structure instrumented with multiplexed macrobend optical fiber sensors, offering a cost-effective and low complexity alternative for force monitoring solutions. The system effectively localized and quantified one, two, or three simultaneous loads within 16 distinct sensing areas, utilizing only five in-series optical fiber sensors, which were spectrally interrogated in transmission mode. The monitored loads ranged from 1000 to 2000 gf. The use of the Huber loss function allows the model to adaptively predict values associated with regions with or without loads. Experimental results showed an average mean absolute error of 224±65 gf during testing. By applying a straightforward post-processing method for load presence detection in each region, the system achieved average F1 scores ranging from 0.84 to 0.93 across the monitored regions, and an average Hamming score of 0.93. These findings demonstrate the system's effectiveness in monitoring multiple loads, underscoring the potential of optical fiber sensors and CNNs in sensing applications. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

Downlink transmission of a nonorthogonal visible light communication (VLC) system, empowered by autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs), is studied for coexisting enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultrareliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and massive machine-type communication (mMTC) services. A joint resource allocation problem involving user association, transmit power, and flight trajectory of AAVs is formulated, with the goal of characterizing a multiobjective tradeoff as a weighted sum of the power consumption of each AAV and the perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) of its associated eMBB users, while ensuring the service-specific requirements for eMBB, mMTC, and URLLC are met. Assuming the imperfection of channel state information (CSI), we invoke a generalized Benders decomposition (GBD) methodology, leveraging tools from convex optimization and multiagent deep reinforcement learning to address this problem. We further analytically derive the upper and lower bounds on the reward function for each AAV as a learning agent. Extensive simulations confirm that our proposed method outperforms the single-agent counterpart in the literature, with up to a 22% reduction in power consumption and a 13% gain in perceived QoE. Additionally, compared to the globally optimal brute-force method for AAV-user association, our proposed method experiences only a trivial performance loss in a small-scale scenario. © 2014 IEEE.

The increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in recent decades has underscored the need for more accurate and objective diagnostic methods. Electroencephalography (EEG) holds promise as a tool in ASD neurobiological research due to its ability to capture neural oscillatory activity with high temporal resolution. This study aims to analyze the neurophysiological differences between individuals with ASD and neurotypical populations by examining EEG data using Hjorth parameters. The preprocessing stage involved using a Butterworth filter to enhance EEG signal quality by eliminating noise in the frequency range of 4-40 Hz. The Hjorth parameters, including Activity, Mobility, and Complexity, were used to assess the statistical characteristics of the EEG signals. The analysis was conducted on EEG data collected from 5 typical individuals and 5 ASD ASD subjects. Our findings reveal that the Hjorth Activity parameter is notably lower in the ASD group across all regions, with the most significant differences observed in the left and right frontal areas, where average activity measures 0.236 μV 2 and 0.060 μV 2 in ASD individuals, compared to 0.512 μV 2 and 0.138 μV 2 in the neurotypical group. However, the Hjorth Complexity and Mobility values remained consistent between the two groups, implying that the fundamental structure of the EEG signals is relatively preserved. These findings offer insights into the neurobiological mechanisms of ASD and suggest the potential use of Hjorth parameters in developing more targeted interventions for individuals with ASD.
