We previously developed a dynamic 4D anthropomorphic breast phantom, which can be used to optimize contrast-based breast imaging systems, accounting for patient variability and contrast kinetics [1]. In this study we aim to compare the performance of contrast-enhanced mammographic and tomosynthesis imaging protocols followed by temporal subtraction and dual-energy subtraction, qualitatively and quantitatively across a couple of patient models. Signal-difference-to-noise ratio (SDNR) is measured for the six paradigms of contrast enhanced, temporally subtracted, and dual-energy subtracted mammography and tomosynthesis and compared. The results show how the performance is more dependent on the breast model in mammography than in tomosynthesis. Also, it is observed that dual-energy subtraction can be beneficial in mammography, whereas it is not advantageous in tomosynthesis. Lastly, the results suggest that temporal subtraction in general outperforms dual-energy subtraction. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The spread of telemedicine systems increases every day. The systems and PACS based on DICOM images has become common. This rise reflects the need to develop new storage systems, more efficient and with lower computational costs. With this in mind, this article discusses a study for application in NetCDF data format as the basic platform for storage of DICOM images. The study case comparison adopts an ordinary database, the HDF5 and the NetCDF to storage the medical images. Empirical results, using a real set of images, indicate that the time to retrieve images from the NetCDF for large scale images has a higher latency compared to the other two methods. In addition, the latency is proportional to the file size, which represents a drawback to a telemedicine system that is characterized by a large amount of large image files.

Due to increasing demand, container terminals face the challenges of increasing its service capacity and minimize the time of ships loading and unloading. The assignment of storage locations for reshuffled containers is a problem to the efficiency of container terminals operations, as a wrong assignment may result in several future reshuffles. This paper proposes a meta-heuristic based on the Clonal Selection Algorithm to minimize reshuffle when retrieving containers from a stack. The model competitiveness in accuracy and time are established by extensive numerical experiments comparing with an existing Integer program model. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising optimization tool for the container stacking problem. © 2011 IEEE.

In view of the current and predictable energy shortage and environmental concerns, the exploitation of renewable energy sources offers great potential to meet increasing energy demands and to decrease depend- ence on fossil fuels. However, introducing these sources will be more attractive provided they operate in conjunction with energy storage systems (ESS). Furthermore, effective energy storage management is essential to achieve a balance between power quality, efficiency, costs and environmental constraints. This paper presents a method based on the analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy multi-rules and multi-sets. By exploiting a multiple criteria analysis, the proposed methods evaluate the operation of storage energy systems such as: pumped hydro and compressed air energy storage, H2, flywheel, super-capacitors and lithium-ion storage as well as NaS advanced batteries and VRB flow battery. The main objective of the study is to find the most appropriate ESS consistent with a power quality priority. Several parameters are used for the investigation: efficiency, load management, technical maturity, costs, environmental impact and power quality.

In this paper, we present a novel statistical reconstruction method based on Compton noise suppression for Digital Breast Tomosynthesis. The physical modeling for X-ray's interaction with tissues was investigated. A Compton noise based statistical model with a conjugate prior was introduced. Results from our proposed method, Backprojection (BP) method, Simultaneous Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (SART) and Maximum Likelihood with Convex Algorithm (MLCA) were compared based on image quality analysis. Compared with other algorithms, our proposed method shows comparable performance. It also produces even better results in the Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR) evaluation. ©2011 IEEE.

Digital breast tomosynthesis is a novel breast cancer detection technique by allowing the reconstruction of arbitrary planes in the breast from a set of limited-angle projection images acquired at different view angles with a particular tube geometry setup. In this paper, filtered backprojection (FBP) was optimized as the reconstruction method with a parallel imaging breast tomosynthesis system. The slice thickness filter (profile filter) with task-adapted parameters was applied to computer simulated data, in order to investigate the main effects of this kind of filter regarding spatial resolution and artifacts in the reconstructed results. ©2011 IEEE.

Western blotting readily identifies specific proteins amidst complex biological backgrounds [1, 2]. Nevertheless, immunob-lotting suffers from tremendous labor-intensive and time-intensive requirements [3]. The slab-gel assays require 1-2 days for completion with multiple hands-on "blotting" steps and yield semi-quantitative information. Recently, our group has introduced new approaches for completing Western blotting. The microfluidic integration strategies introduced and used allow rapid results reporting, full assay automation, and limited sample consumption (1-10 uL). Our integration strategies use spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal modulation of separation mechanisms in fully electrophoretic systems. The present study reports on recapitulation of immunoaffinity in previously sized proteins, using novel in-transit electrophoretic removal of SDS from SDS-protein complexes. Early results show both the length- and timescales for protein 'renaturation' are compatible with on-chip operation. Further, substantial binding affinity is recapitulated using this streamlined and promising approach.
