EEG and fMRI are complementary, noninvasive technologies for investigating human brain function. These modalities have been used to uncover large-scale functional networks and their disruptions in clinical populations. Given the high temporal resolution of EEG and high spatial resolution of fMRI, integrating these modalities can provide a more holistic understanding of brain activity. This work explores a multimodal source decomposition technique for extracting shared modes of temporal variation between fMRI BOLD signals and EEG spectral power fluctuations in the resting state. The resulting components are then compared between patients with focal epilepsy and controls, revealing multimodal network differences between groups.

Transfer Learning for Keypoint Detection in Low-Resolution Thermal TUG Test Images

This study presents a novel approach to human keypoint detection in low-resolution thermal images using transfer learning techniques. We introduce the first application of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test in thermal image computer vision, establishing a new paradigm for mobility assessment. Our method leverages a MobileNetV3-Small encoder and a ViTPose decoder, trained using a composite loss function that balances latent representation alignment and heatmap accuracy. The model was evaluated using the Object Keypoint Similarity (OKS) metric from the COCO Keypoint Detection Challenge. The proposed model achieves better performance with AP, AP50, and AP75 scores of 0.861, 0.942, and 0.887 respectively, outperforming traditional supervised learning approaches like Mask R-CNN and ViTPose-Base. Moreover, our model demonstrates superior computational efficiency in terms of parameter count and FLOPS. This research lays a solid foundation for future clinical applications of thermal imaging in mobility assessment and rehabilitation monitoring. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Autonomous take-off and landing capabilities are crucial in UAV vision-based missions, ensuring adaptive navigation, especially in challenging environments where realtime identification and interaction with a variety of landing platforms are required. In this context, this paper presents a servo-visual controller that uses pattern detection and color segmentation techniques to identify take-off/landing platforms and estimate their current orientation. The proposed system was subjected to experimental validation with four platforms positioned in different orientations, heights, and positions, demonstrating its versatility in various conditions. Our study addresses the Flying Robots Trial League challenge, which emulates mapping and inspection tasks in offshore platforms.

The recent proliferation of hyper-realistic deepfake videos has drawn attention to the threat of audio and visual forgeries. Most previous studies on detecting artificial intelligence-generated fake videos only utilize visual modality or audio modality. While some methods exploit audio and visual modalities to detect forged videos, they have not been comprehensively evaluated on multimodal datasets of deepfake videos involving acoustic and visual manipulations, and are mostly based on convolutional neural networks with low detection accuracy. Considering that human cognition instinctively integrates multisensory information including audio and visual cues to perceive and interpret content and the success of transformer in various fields, this study introduces the audio-visual transformer-based ensemble network (AVTENet). This innovative framework tackles the complexities of deepfake technology by integrating both acoustic and visual manipulations to enhance the accuracy of video forgery detection. Specifically, the proposed model integrates several purely transformer-based variants that capture video, audio, and audio-visual salient cues to reach a consensus in prediction. For evaluation, we use the recently released benchmark multimodal audio-video FakeAVCeleb dataset. For a detailed analysis, we evaluate AVTENet, its variants, and several existing methods on multiple test sets of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms all existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance on Testset-I and Testset-II of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. We also compare AVTENet against humans in detecting video forgery. The results show that AVTENet significantly outperforms humans. © 2016 IEEE.

Temporal resolution of spike coding in feedforward networks with signal convergence and divergence

Convergent and divergent structures in the networks that make up biological brains are found across many species and brain regions at various spatial scales. Neurons in these networks fire action potentials, or "spikes," whose precise timing is becoming increasingly appreciated as large sources of information about both sensory input and motor output. In this work, we investigate the extent to which feedforward convergent/divergent network structure is related to the gain in information of spike timing representations over spike count representations. While previous theories on coding in convergent and divergent networks have largely neglected the role of precise spike timing, our model and analyses place this aspect at the forefront. For a suite of stimuli with different timescales, we demonstrate that structural bottlenecks–small groups of neurons post-synaptic to network convergence–have a stronger preference for spike timing codes than expansion layers created by structural divergence. We further show that this relationship can be generalized across different spike-generating models and measures of coding capacity, implying a potentially fundamental link between network structure and coding strategy using spikes. Additionally, we found that a simple network model based on convergence and divergence ratios of a hawkmoth (Manduca sexta) nervous system can reproduce the relative contribution of spike timing information in its motor output, providing testable predictions on optimal temporal resolutions of spike coding across the moth sensory-motor pathway at both the single-neuron and population levels. © 2025 Mobille et al. Multi-step ahead time series forecasting is essential in Internet of Things (IoT) applications in smart cities and smart homes to make accurate future predictions and precise decision-making. Thus, this study introduces a novel multiple-input single-output (MISO) forecasting method called Multi-Step Embedding-based Fuzzy Time Series (MS-EFTS), designed to predict high-dimensional non-stationary time series data. As a first-order approach, it employs a direct strategy that integrates an embedding transformation with a weighted multivariate FTS (WMVFTS) model. This combination allows for effective predictions over long-term horizons within low-dimensional, learned continuous representations. The effectiveness of the proposed MS-EFTS is assessed using three high-dimensional IoT time series in this investigation. The obtained results showcase the superior performance of the proposed method compared to some deep learning forecasting methods, including LSTM, BiLSTM, TCN, and CNN-LSTM, in terms of accuracy, parsimony, and efficiency. © 2014 IEEE.

This study aims to implement a machine learning technique in identifying the irregularities of customer behavior on the use of prepaid electricity pulses. The methods used are Linear Discriminant Analysis and Logistic Regression. The performance of the classification system will be evaluated using the 10-fold cross-validation technique. Validation results are measured using accuracy, precision and recall values. In this research shows that the use of machine learning technique has a good performance in classification of electrical consumption behavior. Experimental results with the different amount of data testing indicate that Logistic Regression method has high accuracy, precision, and recall value when compared with Linear Discriminant Analysis that is 100%. This is due to Logistic Regression method can predict irregularities accurately because the addition of the amount of data does not affect the performance of the method. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper presents a practical methodology for optimizing the geometry of electrical grounding grids at industrial frequencies of 50Hz and 60Hz, integrating advanced calculation techniques and evolutionary algorithms to improve the safety and operational performance of electrical grounding systems. The proposed approach is particularly beneficial for industrial automation and control systems, where effective grounding is necessary to maintain system reliability and prevent downtime. This methodology employs mathematical modeling and computational tools to optimize grid parameters, ensuring compliance with safety standards while reducing operational costs, thus contributing to the overall efficiency of automated systems in industrial environments. The study reports a reduction of up to 66% in the number of vertical rods and 40% in horizontal conductors compared to traditional methods. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can significantly reduce material usage and costs while maintaining electrical safety in accordance with regulatory standards, making it applicable to a wide range of industrial settings, including substations and automated facilities. © 2025 The Authors

Static load models hold immense applicability in Electric Power Systems (EPS) steady-state analysis. This paper describes the most used static load models - polynomial and exponential - and proposes a hybrid system for parameters identification of the described models and EPS simulation, through an interface between the Python programming language and the OpenDSS EPS simulation software. Providing a theoretical foundation, this work presents the methodology implemented in the system, which employs computational optimisation with the method of least squares and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, statistical analysis and EPS simulation. Its results, validated with measured data from various load compositions, acquired in a laboratory, indicate that the system has notable accuracy, precision and a wide application prospect in smart grids. © 2019 IEEE.

Measurement of peripheral nerve magnetostimulation thresholds of a head solenoid coil between 200 Hz and 88.1 kHz

Objective: Magnetic fields switching at kilohertz frequencies induce electric fields in the body, which can cause peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS). Although magnetostimulation has been extensively studied below 10 kHz, the behavior of PNS at higher frequencies remains poorly understood. This study aims to investigate PNS thresholds at frequencies up to 88.1 kHz and to explore deviations from the widely accepted hyperbolic strength-duration curve (SDC). Methods and procedures: PNS thresholds were measured in the head of 8 human volunteers using a solenoidal coil at 16 distinct frequencies, ranging from 200 Hz to 88.1 kHz. A hyperbolic SDC was used as a reference to compare the frequency-dependent behavior of PNS thresholds. Results: Contrary to the predictions of the hyperbolic SDC, PNS thresholds did not decrease monotonically with frequency. Instead, thresholds reached a minimum near 25 kHz, after which they increased by an average of 39% from 25 kHz to 88.1 kHz across subjects. This pattern indicates a significant deviation from previously observed behavior at lower frequencies. Conclusion: Our results suggest that PNS thresholds exhibit a non-monotonic frequency dependence at higher frequencies, diverging from the traditional hyperbolic SDC. These findings offer critical data for refining neurodynamic models and provide insights for setting PNS safety limits in applications like MRI gradient coils and magnetic particle imaging (MPI). Further investigation is needed to understand the biological mechanisms driving these deviations beyond 25 kHz. Clinical impact: These findings call for further basic research into biological mechanisms underlying high frequency PNS threshold trends, and supports refinement of safety guidelines for MRI and MPI systems for clinical implementation. © 2013 IEEE.
