Non-invasive vibration measurements from the knee offer a convenient and affordable alternative to benchtop or biomechanics lab joint health monitoring systems. Recently, joint acoustic emissions (JAEs) measured from the knee were shown to be an indicator of knee health. However, the origin of JAEs is still not fully understood, which limits its acceptance and use by clinical experts. In this proof-of-concept study, rather than relying on the movements of the knee and corresponding frictional rubbing of internal surfaces to produce vibrations, we propose using an active vibration sensing approach with a known vibration source interrogating the knee. We aim to elucidate the linkage between knee vibration characteristics and structural changes in the joint following injuries. We measured tibial vibration responses of two participants using a laser vibrometer system to quantify the frequency band where the most repeatable tibial vibration measurement can be taken. Subsequently, a custom-designed wearable system measured mid-activity tibial vibration characteristics from four participants (five healthy knees and three knees with prior acute injury) during unloaded knee flexion-extensions. An active sensing knee health score was defined as the ratio of the changes in low- to high-frequency response during flexion-extension. Since changes in the boundary of tibia would alter low-frequency response more than high frequency response, we found that increased knee laxity with acute injuries resulted in an increased active sensing knee health score. Our findings demonstrate the potential of active vibration sensing as an interpretable, computationally inexpensive alternative to JAEs for wearable knee health assessment.

This paper presents an ac-dc-ac converter with six controlled switches for single-phase systems applied as a universal active power filter (UAPF). The proposed topology is feasible for compensating voltages swells and harmonics generated by nonlinear loads. The difference between the conventional and proposed topology is the replacement of a controlled leg (composed of IGBTs) for an uncontrolled leg (composed only of diodes). For performance comparisons, current THD, switching and conduction losses of the semiconductors, average switching frequency, and power in the transformer were used as parameters. Control and pulsewidth modulation techniques based on space vector approaches were developed to eliminate zero-crossing distortions caused by the use of the uncontrolled leg. Simulation and experimental results were presented for validation of the mathematical model. © 2020 IEEE.

A vast number of technologies based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) have proliferated into various application domains. As part of its objectives to develop agents which can behave and think like humans, some branches of AI have focused on developing various algorithms that can learn from input data without explicitly being programmed. In the food industry, notably in restaurants, smartphone technology is typically used to collect data from customers efficiently such as orders or feedback toward the services provided. The use of smartphones by some restaurants is motivated by their convenience and efficiency. Furthermore, various promotions, discounts, and membership benefits offered by cellular service providers have attracted the use of smartphones as devices for improving restaurant services to their customers. This study aimed to conduct a sentiment analysis related to multi-brand restaurants in Indonesia based on customer feedback. The data retrieved from the Google Play Store consists of 756 reviews from Boga, Champs, Hangry, Ismaya, Kulo, and Union groups. In this study, TF-IDF was used as a vectorizer to represent customer feedback as numeric vectors. The polarity sentiment of customer feedback was recognized using classifier models based on machine learning such as Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes (NB), Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) as the classifier. The empirical results showed that SVM has the best accuracy of 93.10 % average accuracy followed by Logistic Regression with 92.41 %, Random Forest with 84.14 % average accuracy, and Naive Bayes with 76.55 % average accuracy.

Diamond nanostructures can have exciting applications in electronics and thermal management, but their controlled fabrication can be challenging. Here, we present a top-down approach for the fabrication of diamond nanorod (DNR) clusters, via use of metal masks (Al, Ag, Au, and Cr) and reactive-ion etching (RIE). Prolonged RIE on Ag and Cr masks yields distinct etching profiles, and DNR clusters are selectively formed from Ag masks, with individual nanorods having dimensions of ~100 nm diameter and ~1.5 µm length. Detailed electron microscopy shows thin layer of amorphous carbon (a-C) around single crystalline DNR cores. Chemical analyses also show presence of oxygen on the surface of the DNRs. Fabrication of the DNR clusters with scalable top-down approach could lead to new nanodiamond-based applications. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In Industry 4.0, there is a constant pursuit for efficiency and productivity, and, searching to achieve this, the usage of multiple robots to attend to several tasks simultaneously is usual. Nowadays, there is plenty of robotic architectures, having their navigation system based on numerous different sensors. This work compares the line-follower robots, having a determined path, with the free-moving robots that navigate based on odometry, for load collecting and delivery tasks in specific locations. For this, four simulated experiments are run in two scenes, with two and four tasks, respectively. The comparison is based on a difference in robot quantity, with more line-followers than free-moving ones, aiming to collect values such as idle time, task wait time, and the number of tasks done for each machine. The results show advantages in using less but more intelligent robots with free movement. Such robots are not bound to one unique task and can use their idle time to roam and complete other processes. However, the task wait time is a concerning issue, as too few robots for overcharged situations can increase execution delays.

Typical video compression systems consist of two main modules: motion coding and residual coding. This general architecture is adopted by classical coding schemes (such as international standards H.265 and H.266) and deep learning-based coding schemes. We propose a novel B-frame coding architecture based on two-layer Conditional Augmented Normalization Flows (CANF). It has the striking feature of not transmitting any motion information. Our proposed idea of video compression without motion coding offers a new direction for learned video coding. Our base layer is a low-resolution image compressor that replaces the full-resolution motion compressor. The low-resolution coded image is merged with the warped high-resolution images to generate a high-quality image as a conditioning signal for the enhancement-layer image coding in full resolution. One advantage of this architecture is significantly reduced computational complexity due to eliminating the motion information compressor. In addition, we adopt a skip-mode coding technique to reduce the transmitted latent samples. The rate-distortion performance of our scheme is slightly lower than that of the state-of-the-art learned B-frame coding scheme, B-CANF, but outperforms other learned B-frame coding schemes. However, compared to B-CANF, our scheme saves 45% of multiply-accumulate operations (MACs) for encoding and 27% of MACs for decoding. The code is available at https://***.

Speech synthesis has been successfully exploited for mapping from text sequence to speech waveform where high-resource languages have been well studied and learned from a large amount of text-speech paired data in public-domain corpora. However, developing speech synthesis under low-resource languages is challenging for speech communication in local regions since the collection of training data is expensive. In particular, the speaker-aware speech generation under low-resource settings is crucial in real world. Such a problem is increasingly difficult in case of very limited speaker-specific data. This paper presents a speaker-aware speech synthesis under low-resource settings based on an encoder-decoder framework by using transformer. Knowledge transfer is performed by incorporating a speaker-aware embedding through first learning a pretrained transformer from multi-speaker data of a low-populated spoken language and then fine-tuning the transformer to a target speaker with very limited speaker-specific embeddings. Experiments on low-resource Taiwanese speech synthesis are evaluated to show the merit of speaker-aware transformer in terms of Mel cepstral distortion and mean opinion score.

Pupillometry measures pupil size, and several open-source algorithms are available to analyse pupillometry data. However, only a few studies compared these algorithms’ accuracy and computational resources. This study aims to compare the accuracy of computer vision-based algorithms (Swirski, Starburst, PuRe, ElSe, ExCuSe algorithms) and the machine learning algorithm, DeepLabCut, to the double-blinded human examiners (gold-standard). Training of DeepLabCut with different architectures and a variable number of markers (2-9 markers) was done on an open-source dataset. The duration of training was statistically longer for the ResNet152 model compared to the MobileNet model. The pupil diameters in computer vision-based software such as PuRe, Starburst, and Swirski were statistically different from human measurements. MobileNet 2 and 3 marker models were the closest to the human measurements. In conclusion, this work highlights the efficiency of lower marker models based on MobileNet architecture in DeepLabCut, which consumes fewer computational resources and is more accurate. © 2024 Institute of Information Technology, Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW.
