Prober is a functional and performance analysis tool for parallel programs, developed during an undergraduate research project. In this paper we show the new expanded version of Prober, in which some features from different software tools are aggregated. It can be used as a single tool to aid the developer in the performance analysis of parallel programs. Our main goal is to provide a new version of Prober, with additional features. Among them we can highlight: the interpretation of user scripts, a user-level support library the generation of speedup and efficiency graphics, batch execution and a new user interface. In order to show, verify and analyze the use of the new version of Prober, we did performance tests in a parallel image convolution program. We added performance measuring routines to collect performance data within different internal code segments;built a set of scripts to specify the performance tests;ran the set of scripts in batch mode;used Prober to generate graphics and statistics based on the collected performance data;and analyzed the results rising Prober as an aid tool.

Renewable energy sources have been increasingly targeted as an alternative for reducing fossil fuel emissions. This scenario requires a better understanding of energy systems' performance and limitations, notably using photovoltaic setups under diverse meteorological conditions and determining device measurement uncertainties. Accordingly, this study conducts a performance evaluation of a photovoltaic system of copper, indium, and gallium (di)selenide technology. It compares the results provided by a reference normalized equation with two interpretable artificial intelligence techniques, Fuzzy Inference System and Bayesian Networks, when temperature is also considered. In the experiments, the study found significant percentage differences between the normalization procedure and the fuzzy system on days with lower irradiation values. On the other hand, the results provided by Bayesian networks presented lower difference percentages in relation to the normalization equation values.

This work aims at investigating the influence of luminance information and environment illumination on skin classification. We explore Bayesian approaches to perform automatic classification of human skin pixels on digital images, using color features as input. Two probabilistic skin color models were built on different color spaces (RGB, normalized RG, HSI, HS, YCbCr and CbCr) and tested in a task of automatic pixel classification into skin and non-skin. Analyses of classification performance were done by presenting an illumination controlled image database containing images acquired in four different illumination conditions (shadow, sun, incandescent and fluorescent lights) to these classifiers. Our experiments show that building probabilistic skin color models using the CbCr color space generally improves performance of the classifiers and that best performance is achieved in shadow illumination.

In this paper we proposed an approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) and digital image processing (DIP) to deal with the problem of cutting identical items (pieces) with irregular shapes in metal plates (objects). The goal is to maximize the number of items to be cut in the available area of the object. In this approach both object and the items are depicted as color images. The GA is responsible for generating the solutions, each one represented by a vector containing a set of translations and angles that indicate the positions and orientations for cutting the pieces. The evaluation of each solution generated by GA is performed by an image analysis algorithm that basically detects overlapping among the items placed on the object. Preliminary experiments indicate that the use of GA combined with DIP is a good alternative for solving the investigated problem. © 2015 ACM.

Candidate selection platforms have been widely used in companies that seek agility in the process of hiring. Candidates who do not meet the requirements of a job vacancy are disqualified in the first step, called screening. This stage has been automated due to the large volume of curriculum vitae (CV) of candidates per vacancy, particularly for internship vacancies. As a consequence, candidates receive little to none feedback and do not know how to improve/optimize their CVs for new applications. The goal of this paper is to realize the curriculum vitae optimization (CVO) process for internship vacancies by implementing a recommendation system that given an undergraduate student CV, it suggests the addition of relevant keywords, taking into account the student’s undergraduate course. This system is implemented based on the clustering of CVs keywords, from an internship recruitment private company database, into profile groups which are linked to internship vacancies. The experimental results showed that recommendations improved students CVs similarity (competitiveness within a specific field) from 18.83%, with 3 keywords recommendation, up to 50.67%, with 10 words. © 2023, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

This paper presents a progress in the development of a recent and promising wavelet-based Algebraic Multigrid method. This new approach uses the lifting technique for creating an algorithm with smaller memory requirement and a reduced number of floating point operations, if long filters are used, keeping the efficiency of the multigrid technique, which is tested in the TEAM 28 Problem. The Incomplete Cholesky and Incomplete LU preconditioners are used for comparison. © 2010 SBMO/SBMag.

This work proposes an optimization procedure based on a bootstrapped neural network interpolation approach and the Genetic Algorithm method. The bootstrapped neural network is used to generate designed data sets in order to estimate a mapping from input to output space in an intrinsic experiment in a motor drive vibration study. The optimization procedure is aimed to minimize the motor vibration by adjusting some drive control parameters.

In contrast to the standard algebraic multigrid, the Wavelet-based Algebraic Multigrid method relies more strongly on the smoothing method because the coarse spaces are chosen a priori. So, it is very important to develop new smoother methods, especially for those cases where the classical Gauss-Seidel smoothing method does not give good results. This paper proposes a new multilevel smoothing approach based on projection technique. The proposed smoothing method was applied to smoothing the error in a linear systems issued from finite element solutions of the elliptic equation and the results compared with those obtained from the Gauss-Seidel method. © 2011 SBMO/SBMag.
