Hydrazones are rigid conjugated systems and the Nitrogen-Hydrogen unit participates in hydrogen bonding. Exhibit a wide spectrum of biological properties such an antimicrobial, anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to evaluate the structural, spectroscopic, electronic and pharmacokinetic properties of the compound hydrazone were investigated by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) computational calculations. As well as evaluate as the potential of the hydrazone (E)-4-((2-(phthalazin-1-yl)hydrazineylidene)methyl)benzene-1,3-diol (from now on named S8) to reverse the resistance of the NorA and MepA efflux pumps, in S. aureus strains. Good agreement was observed between the data calculated using DFT calculations and the experimental data from the infrared and Raman spectra. The compound was able to synergistically modulate the action of the Norfloxacin antibiotic against the S. aureus 1199B strain carrying the NorA efflux pump. But when associated with ethidium bromide, it did not act against the NorA efflux pump, which suggests that it does not act directly on the efflux mechanism of bacteria. © 2024, The Authors. An extreme rainfall event caused historic floods in the western Brazilian Amazon in 2021, with significant socio-economic impacts. Since global climate change is amplifying the frequency and severity of such extreme events, our objective was to assess the extent to which this disaster can be attributed to anthropogenic climate change. To achieve this goal, we used CHIRPS data for observational validation of the HadGEM3-A model, which was employed for the attribution analysis, assessed land cover areas directly affected by the floods, and analysed the socioeconomic impacts. The results revealed a positive precipitation anomaly, with rainfall from December to March reaching 48 % above the average (1,329 mm). This extreme event is 153 % more likely to occur in the context of current human-induced climate change than in a natural scenario, with the return period reduced from 107 to 42 years. Furthermore, we found that the Attributable Risk Fraction (FAR) was 61 %, i.e., the likelihood of such an event occurring can be attributed to anthropogenic influence on climate. Despite FAR limitations, we estimated that the proportion of climate change-attributable damages amounts to nearly US$10 million and affects over 43,000 individuals directly, likely underestimated. Our findings emphasise the urgent need for global climate action. Nationally, multi-sector data collection and climate integration into disaster risk reduction planning are essential for societal adaptation. Public management must include climate change in territorial planning, as environmental preservation and income redistribution can mitigate flood impacts, which tend to be increasingly frequent, as our findings show. © 2025 The Authors

Gradient Descent Bit Flipping (GDBF) decoding has one of the best decoding performances of the bit flip type decoding algorithms for low density parity check code. Multi-bit type GDBF decoding, however, achieves good error performance only with suitable thresholds. In this paper, we propose multi-bit type GDBF decoding without using thresholds. The proposed method estimates the number of bits to flip from the received soft sequence using the characteristic of the probability density distribution of the additive white Gaussian noise channel. The error performance of the proposed method is almost equal to that of the conventional method despite not using thresholds.

Recently, the exact solution of the capacity of an attenuated quantum channel which is a model of a long distance optical fiber channel was derived [V. Giovannetti, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 027902, (2004)]. In particular, the capacity of a broadband quantum channel, which is the ultimate limit of quantum communications, was shown. In this paper, we consider wavelength division multiplexing in order to attain the capacity of a broadband quantum channel. © 2010 IEEE.

Recently, the capacity of an attenuated quantum channel which is a model of a long distance optical fiber channel was derived. This capacity is in principle achieved by a continuous modulation and a random coding. However, a continuous modulation and a random coding are not practical. Therefore, we need discussion about capacity used for more practical modulation and coding. In this paper, we show characteristics of both information and error probability criteria for an attenuated channel using M-ary PSK modulation and pseudo-cyclic codes.

After another tour of sea duty Lieutenant Commander Mann was assigned in 1962 to U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters Washington D.C. where he is currently assigned as Chief Cruising Cutters Section of the Naval Engineering Division.
