Harnessing 3D seismic data for mapping natural CO2distribution: Paving the way for future CCS/CCUS implementation in the Lower Talang Akar Formation, Jabung Block, South Sumatra Basin

Hydrocarbon reservoirs saturated with CO2 are naturally widespread in the Lower Talang Akar Formation (LTAF) and deposited in the Jabung Block, South Sumatra Basin, Indonesia. The different CO2 saturation contents stored in the reservoirs pose a challenge to planning future carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) in the area. This study integrates poststack 3D seismic data and existing wells in the western part of the Jabung Block. It utilizes seismic attribute methods such as sum of negative amplitude, relative impedance, variance, and ant tracking to predict the origin, saturation, and distribution of CO2-saturated hydrocarbon accumulations in the sandstone reservoirs of the LTAF. The results show that CO2 originated from the Betara Deep source rock in the study area's eastern side and migrated to the reservoirs through major northwest-southeast-Trending fault zones. The saturation of CO2 in the reservoirs is mainly controlled by the distance from the source and the reservoir depths, faulting, and fracturing intensity. The fields closer to the Betara source rock tend to be filled with higher contents of CO2 saturation. The results provide valuable guidance in CO2 identification and mapping for future CCS and CCUS implementation in the study area. © 2024 by The Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

This paper presents a novel approach for estimating thin bed thickness by using gradient of spectral amplitudes resulting from spectral decomposition. The gradient is calculated from the differences between amplitudes spectrum at two adjacent frequencies. The technique is based on the concept that seismic reflections from a thin bed have characteristic signatures in the frequency domain. Thicker beds have shorter period of spectral notches than thinner beds have. Consequently, steeper gradients of spectral amplitude representing thicker beds and lower gradients representing thinner beds. In this paper, the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) method is used for spectral decomposition. The application of the technique for mapping thin bed thickness distribution is presented. The gradient of spectral amplitude has been found to have better correlation to thickness than the conventional spectral amplitude to thickness. © 2011 SEG.

The stability of the stope opening is a factor that greatly determines succesfull operation of an underground mining. In order to be a safe mining method by using paste fill, it is necessary to do a research on the stability of paste fill which is used to fi ll the mining stope. The study was conducted based on the analytical method and numerical modeling. The limit equili brium method was used to analysis the stability of paste fill considering the acting forces and mechanical strength of paste fill, for num erical modeling was used distinct element method with the program of 3DEC version 4.00 from Itasca, used to displacement analysis of paste fill that can be slided and collapsed by using the rigid and deformeable analysis. The stability analysis of paste fill was perform to ensure safety of mining activities in Kencana underground gold mine.

Volcanostratigraphy study is used for supporting geothermal exploration on preliminary survey. This study is important to identify volcanic eruption center which shows potential area of geothermal heat source. The purpose of volcanostratigraphy study in research area is going to distinguish the characteristics of volcanic eruption product that construct the volcanic body. The analysis of Arjuno-Welirang volcanostratigraphy identification are based on topographic maps of Malang sheet with 1:100.000 scale, 1:50.000 scale, and a geological map. Regarding to the delineation of ridge and river, we determine five crowns, three hummocks, one brigade and one super brigade. The crowns consist of Ringgit, Welirang, Arjuno, Kawi, and Penanggungan, the hummocks comprise of Kembar III, Kembar II, and Kembar I, the brigade is Arjuno-Welirang, and the super brigade is Tengger. Based on topographic map interpretation and geothermal prospect evaluation method analysis, shows that Arjuno-Welirang prospect area have good geothermal resource potential. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The Kerinci geothermal field is one phase liquid reservoir system in the Kerinci District, western part of Jambi Province. In this field, there are geothermal prospects that identified by the heat source up flow inside a National Park area. Kerinci field was planned to develop 1×55 MWe by Pertamina Geothermal Energy. To define reservoir characterization, the numerical simulation of Kerinci field is developed by using TOUGH2 software with information from conceptual model. The pressure and temperature profile well data of KRC-B1 are validated with simulation data to reach natural state condition. The result of the validation is suitable matching. Based on natural state simulation, the resource assessment of Kerinci geothermal field is estimated by using Monte Carlo simulation with the result P10-P50-P90 are 49.4 MW, 64.3 MW and 82.4 MW respectively. This paper is the first study of resource assessment that has been estimated successfully in Kerinci Geothermal Field using numerical simulation coupling with Monte carlo simulation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Krakatau is one of the volcano in Indonesia which has the destructive paroxysmal eruption. Eruption on 1883 was estimated had VEI of 6. The eruption was recorded as one among some most violent volcanic eruption event in the world. Gravity method is one of the geophysical methods that could delineate the subsurface structure base on density variation. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to reconstruct the 3D subsurface structure of the Krakatau volcano especially the approximate location and dimension of the magma chamber. The subsurface model of Krakatau was done by 3D modelling using residual anomaly map. In order to develop the status of magma chamber model, the available information on the geological map of Krakatau and surrounding area was used. Besides that, some information relative to the volcano such as the information derived from earthquake wave attenuation were utilized. The result of the study shows that position its volcano magma chamber is not directly vertical or oblique under the volcano crater and it has multiple chambers which trending northwest-southeast. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. A destructive earthquake with magnitude Mw 6.5 occurred in Ambon, Indonesia, on 26 September 2019. This earthquake generated an aftershock sequence. In this study, we determined the location of the aftershock sequence using a non-linear algorithm from the Non-Linear Location (NonLinLoc) program. The catalog and waveform data were collected using 11 seismographs from BMKG regional network located around the Maluku archipelago. The data was recorded between 26 September and 18 October 2019. We have manually picked the P-and-S wave phase by using Seisgram2K software. In our preliminary result, we have located about 1,300 events of aftershock sequence with about 8,500 phases of P and S waves. Overall, the location of the focus depth of the aftershock sequence is dominantly distributed in between 5 - 25 km. Approximately ∼70% of the distribution of aftershock locations show a North-South (N-S) oriented pattern from west Seram to Ambon Islands. Meanwhile, about ∼20% of the aftershock's locations are distributed around Ambon Island. Our ongoing and future study is to determine accurate hypocentre location derived from double-difference hypocenter relocation with waveform cross-correlation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This study is used a background source model to calculate probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) in Manado City. The gridded seismicity model is applied to characterize the background source model based on the seismicity rate on each grid 0.1 × 0.1 degrees. The results obtained from this study was the contribution of background sources for PSHA in Manado City for the probability of excedence 10% in 50 years is 0.18 ≥ g ≤ 0.19. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

An Mw 7.8 tsunami earthquake ruptured the shallow part of the Mentawai megathrust on 25 October 2010 and generated a large tsunami that hit the Mentawai Islands. The earthquake continued a partial rupture sequence of the 2007 Mw 8.5 and 7.9 Bengkulu earthquake and the 2008 Mw 7.2 North Pagai earthquake. The aftershock activity gives the opportunity to investigate the geometry of the subduction interface, which is critical to understanding the propagation and termination of a large earthquake. However, it is necessary to have a precise location and mechanism of the aftershock distribution to clearly image the fault geometry. In this preliminary study, we have applied the Cut-and-Paste (CAP) focal mechanism inversion method to 20 aftershocks (M ≥ 4.9) of the 2010 Mentawai earthquake. The seismic waveforms recorded by the BMKG broadband seismic network on the regional distance were used in the inversion. They successfully obtained ten focal mechanisms more than that provided in the GCMT catalog. The result exhibits a distinctly different thrust and normal faulting aftershocks activity. The thrust faulting aftershocks are mainly distributed in the downdip of the Mentawai 2010 mainshock rupture, indicating the stresses that have not been released during the mainshock. In the shallow region near the trench, the aftershocks are dominated by a normal faulting mechanism which shows the tensile stress caused by the bending of the subducting plate. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Geothermal bussiness nowadays needs to be accelerated in a way that profit can be obtained as soon as reasonable possible. One of the many ways to do this is by using one of geothermal wellhead generating unit (GWGU), called backpressure turbine. Backpressure turbine can be used in producing electricity as soon as there is productive or rather small-scale productive well existed after finished drilling. In a vapor dominated system, steam fraction in the wellhead capable to produce electricity based on each well productivity immediately. The advantage for using vapor dominated system is reduce brine disposal in the wellhead so it will be a cost benefit in operation. The design and calculation for backpressure turbine will use probablistic approach with Monte Carlo simulation. The parameter that will be evaluated in sensitivity would be steam flow rate, turbine inlet pressure, and turbine exhaust pressure/atmospheric pressure. The result are probability for P10, P50, and P90 of gross power output which are 1.78 MWe, 2.22 MWe and 2.66 Mwe respectively. Whereas the P10, P50, and P90 of SSC are 4.67 kg/s/MWe, 5.19 kg/s/MWe and 5.78 kg/s/MWe respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
