Rhizobacteria alter the phytoremediation potential and antibacterial activity of lemongrass essential oil in lead-contaminated soils

Lead (Pb) is one of the most harmful soil contaminants affecting plant growth. Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) stands out due to its essential oil rich in citral. Studies indicate that Azospirillum brasilense stimulates the development of lemongrass, optimizing nutrient uptake. The methodology involved a factorial greenhouse experiment using lemongrass grown in Pb-contaminated soil, with or without inoculation by A. brasilense (strains Ab-V5 and Ab-V6), and included evaluations of plant growth, Pb and nitrogen content, nitrate reductase activity, essential oil composition, and antibacterial activity. This study tested the effects of A. brasilense in soils with different Pb concentrations, analyzing growth parameters and essential oil composition. The results showed that lemongrass exhibited favorable root development at Pb concentrations up to 300 mg kg⁻¹, and A. brasilense improved nitrogen fixation and stress tolerance. The essential oil of lemongrass, free of Pb contamination, contains high levels of neral and geranial and demonstrated bactericidal activity against Xanthomonas citri and inhibitory effects on X. vesicatoria. These findings suggest that lemongrass oil can be used in biological pest control, highlighting its potential for sustainable applications in the cosmetic and natural disinfectant industries. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Identification, evolutionary and expression analysis of the galactinol synthase (GolS) genes in Panicum virgatum L. and Panicum hallii : An in silico approach

Galactinol synthase (GS;EC 2.4.1.123) is an important enzyme which catalyzes the first step in the raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) biosynthetic pathway. Galactinol synthase genes (GolS) are encoded by multiple genes in the genomes of monocots and dicots and these allelic variants participate in many biological processes. This study presents the first genome-wide analysis of GolS genes in two switchgrass species. We identified a total of six GolS genes/proteins in Panicum virgatum L. and P. hallii genome. Furthermore, we analyzed in silico all PhGolS and PvGolS genes in terms of protein length, molecular weight, theoretical isoelectric point, and 3D protein structure. The subcellular location was mainly predicted as cytoplasmic. Genomic organization revealed that most PhGolS and PvGolS genes have two or three exons. Subsequently, the conserved motifs were identified;they demonstrated high group-specificity in all PhGolS and PvGolS proteins. Comparative phylogenetic analysis of the PhGolS and PvGolS proteins revealed two distinct groups. Synteny events comparisons of the GolS genes in genus Panicum with those of Arabidopsis thaliana, Oryza sativa, Zea mays, and Brachypodium distachyon led to the identification of several orthologous genes, which provided that the GolS genes in plants happened to feature distinct origins, and the synteny of them are conserved among monocots. Transcriptional profiles revealed that GolS genes were expressed in different tissues, indicating that these genes may be involved in various physiological functions. Collectively, the results obtained from this study provide valuable information for further functional characterization of the GolS genes in these important switchgrass species. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

The transgenic sugarcane overexpressing SoSPS1 gene increased sugar content which may alter the root exudation that interact with soil rhizosphere microorganism. The microbial plays an important role in biochemical cycling and nutrient transformation in the soil. Therefore, it is important to investigate the potential risk of the transgenic sugarcane on soil ecosystem. This study is designed to evaluate the impact of overexpressing gene for sucrose-phosphate synthesis (SoSPS1) on the bacterial diversity, enzyme activity and nutrient contents. The transgenic sugarcane showed no significant difference in the population of culturable bacteria in the soil rhizosphere compared to non-transgenic counterpart. The populations of total, nitrogen-fixing and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria were similar in transgenic and non-transgenic sugarcane, although the bacterial population tends to increase at later sugarcane growth stage may due to the rise in nutrition from the root exudation. The PCR analysis showed no detection of horizontal gene flow in the bacteria. However, urease activity was significantly decreased in the transgenic sugarcane concomitant with lower nitrogen content in the soil rhizosphere at a later growth stage might due to the transgenic sugarcane lines increased nitrogen absorption for higher growth rate. Furthermore, the nutrient contents, such as organic carbon, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium, slightly varied in the soil rhizosphere but did not affected by the transgenic sugarcane. The results suggested that the transgenic sugarcane overexpressing SoSPS1 gene may not affect the bacterial diversity, nutrient contents and soil ecosystem. © 2020, Korean Society of Crop Science (KSCS).

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]).
