Plastic-based goods are commonly used in daily life, but their waste poses significant environmental challenges due to its durability. This study investigates the use of recycled plastic as an artificial coarse aggregate in asphalt mixtures, specifically assessing the effects of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) on Hot Rolled Sheet Wearing Course (HRS-WC) mixtures. The objectives are to evaluate the physical properties of the artificial coarse aggregates, identify the optimal asphalt content and Marshall characteristics, and determine the maximum feasible substitution level for these aggregates. A test specimen (briquette) was produced for the Marshall test to assess the mixture properties. Our findings indicate that the maximum allowable substitution of HDPE plastic in HRS-WC mixtures is 42%. With an optimal asphalt content of 7.30%, HDPE substitution levels of 30%, 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50% yielded the highest stability at 45% (1176.696 kg), the highest VMA at 30% (21.250%), and the highest VIM within specifications at 30% (4.998%). The highest VFB value was observed at 45% (88.767%), while the highest Marshall Quotient was at 30% (364.527 kg/mm). The study recommends a maximum HDPE plastic waste substitution level of 40%, highlighting the potential for using HDPE plastic waste in asphalt mixtures to promote more sustainable construction practices. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. To evaluate the potential of sludge from solar photo-Fenton to be transformed into a catalyst for the heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) process, some parameters were investigated, including (i) the impact of heat treatment on catalytic activity through structural and compositional analysis of the iron species (100, 600 and 750 °C);(ii) analysis of the effect of pH and current density (j) on the decolorization and decarbonization efficiency;and (iii) the generation of high-value organic acids. The calcination of sludge to 600 and 750 °C presents changes in the multiferroic structures but does not enhance its catalytic activity, given the similarity of the treatment results of landfill leachate with the catalyst with and without calcination. The treatment of leachate via heterogeneous EF using sludge dried at 100 °C and under pH 3 achieves better results than the treatment without pH adjustment. At the evaluated j values (30, 60 and 90 mA/cm2), Chemical Oxygen Demand removal efficiencies of 47 %, 48 % and 50 % were respectively found, and Total Organic Carbon abatements of 36 %, 36 % and 42 % were reached. Despite the low effluent mineralization, high value-added products (carboxylic acids) are formed during 240 min of EF, with the possibility of selective electroconversion into acetic and formic acid. Regarding decolorization, a successful result was found with the j of 90 mA/cm2, which achieved almost 90 % color removal. Finally, a final treatment strategy is proposed using the sludge only dried to 100 °C, followed by heterogenous EF with acidification to pH 3 and j of 60 mA/cm2. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Roof ponds (RP) can promote comfortable thermal conditions, particularly in single-storey buildings. They allow structural cooling or heating and stabilization of surface and air temperatures. When coupled to radiant panels cooled by the exposed pond, they can further improve their thermal performance. However, there is a lack of research on RPs focusing on the thermal perception of users indoors. The main objective of this study was to evaluate empirically under hot dry summer conditions the thermal perceptions of volunteer participants in an indoor environment conditioned by a system composed of radiant panels coupled to a RP. We also sought to assess the applicability of the PMV model and the passive building models of ASHRAE Standard 55 and EN-15251 under these conditions, through comparison with subjective thermal votes reported by the study participants. In a test building at Ben-Gurion University of Negev, Israel, a sample of 46 participants found a room cooled only by a RP. Bogor Regency is one of Regencies in Jabodetabek area that is experiencing rapid urban growth. This condition impacted the decreasing conditions of 39's from 95's urban small lakes or locally known as 'situ'. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of situ Kebantenan and situ Cikaret as Ciliwung flood mitigation measure in the Bogor Regency. The SWAT model was employed for quantification the water balance of situ and watershed management. The simulation results of the water balance analysis indicated that the monthly average of volume of Situ Kabantenan and Situ Cikaret (2008-2015) were 136,955 m3 and 508,907 m3, the annual inflow Situ Cikaret were 24,693,822 m3/year and outflow were 25,177,593 m3/year, precipitation were 648,520 m3/year, evaporation were 166,543 m3/year, delta storage (1,794) m3/year, respectively. The result of hydrological responses analysis on application of situ and watershed management scenarios that combined the structural and non-structural measures was the best scenario for decreasing maximum discharge at situ outlet which is decreased 41% discharge. So that, in order to enhance the effectiveness of situs for Ciliwung flood mitigation, the combination of the structural and non structural management of 13 situ's in Ciliwung river basin within the Bogor Regency is recommended that can increase the storage capacity from 1.8 million m3 to 4.7 million m3. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Stormwater filters are typically operated in a downflow mode. This research had two objectives: (1) to determine the increased life of a filter operated in an upflow mode, and (2) to determine if the operation of a downflow, mixed-media filter could be modeled using the power equation proposed by Urbonas. The results showed that upflow operation could provide longer filter run times. Using laboratory-scale columns, the use of a power equation to model downflow filtration was also demonstrated. Model confirmation using pilot-scale columns is currently underway. © 2004 ASCE.

Ipojuca is one of the most important rivers in the state of Pernambuco flowing along many municipalities, which has been causing great concern regarding the degree of pollution affecting this waterbody. The major factors contributing to this pollution include the lack of sewage treatment in the cities outlining the river as well as the release of effluents from sugar-alcohol industries located in its basin. The objective of this paper was to carry out a diagnosis of the current pollution scenario in a stretch of Ipojuca River for subsequent simulations of its water quality behavior by using a mathematical modelling. The stretch chosen covers a distance of approximately 66 kilometer of extension, along which Ipojuca River is perennial. Secondary data are available for the calibration of the model. The mathematical model chosen was the QUAL-UFMG, for which we considered the parameters of Dissolved oxygen (DO) and Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). From the data regarding the period between 2008 and 2013, we performed simulations considering the sewage treatment stations in the municipalities of Escada, Primavera, and Ipojuca. We observed that the respective simulations indicated a significant improvement in the quality of water as the DBO removal percentage increased;however, it could have indicated even more efficient results provided that the treatments of effluents from the sugarcane industries installed along the course of the river were improved. © 2016 ejge.

Water resources are very important for the maintenance of life on earth, and water quality results from a relationship between natural phenomena, potentially degrading human activities as well as aspects related to the use and occupation of land. In this context, the role of water resources management is to seek viable alternatives to the solution of the qualitative and quantitative problems of these resources and one of the tools used is the monitoring of water quality in watersheds. The aim of this paper was to apply the QUAL-UFMG model of water quality to assess the water quality of the Sirinhaém river to subsidize a future framework of rivers in classes according to preponderant use. The QUAL-UFMG model was used to simulate the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and the calibration was perfomed manually. For the application of mathematical modeling, the organic load of domestic origin from the cities of Corts, Gameleira, and Sirinhaém and from industrial effluents of the Pedrosa, Cucaú and Trapiche plants were considered. The flow and hydraulic characteristics data were obtained through the fluviometric stations of the National Water Agency - (ANA) while the average values of DO, BOD, and temperature came from the systematic monitoring of the water quality stations. Based on the observed data, the model proved to be efficient in simulating the parameters of the river in this stretch. In the model's validation, a better result was obtained for the BOD than DO. © 2014 ejge.

Previous research has identified significant reductions in infiltration rates in disturbed urban soils. More than 150 prior tests were conducted in predominately sandy and clayey urban soils in the Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama, areas. Infiltration in clayey soils was found to be affected by an interaction of soil moisture and compaction, while infiltration in sandy soils was affected by soil compaction alone. The tests reported here were conducted under more controlled laboratory conditions and represent a wider range of soil textures and specific soil density values. © 2004 ASCE.

The growing concern, on both national and international levels, in relation to the conservation of natural resources, driven by demographic expansion and technological development, has given a particular emphasis to implementations of sustainable housing. An essential resource to be preserved is water, whose consumption in buildings can be reduced in several ways. This article aims to analyze the feasibility of replacing water-saving sanitary ware in order to reduce the consumption of drinking water in social interest housing complexes in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The methodology used is based on survey data on the consumption of drinking water and hydraulic equipment installed in a housing complex, assessing the simulation of installing water saving equipment. The results of this study showed a drinking water savings index between 30 and 60% in the consumption of a housing unit. These values can be reproduced in other social interest housing complexes. © 2015 ejge.

Glutaraldehyde (GA) is the most common biocide used in unconventional oil and gas production. Photocatalysis of GA in brine simulating oil and gas produced water using Ag/AgCl/BiOCl was investigated. Ag/AgCl/BiOCl photocatalyst was synthesized using flower-like BiOCl. Light bulbs emitting visible light at 419 nm were used for the photocatalysis. Removal of GA at 0.1 mM in 200 g/L NaCl solution at pH 7 was 90% after 75 min irradiation using 5 g/L of the photocatalyst. However, at pH 5 or at 300 g/L NaCl, the photocatalytic removal of GA was almost completely inhibited. The GA removal followed pseudo-first order reaction with a rate constant of 0.0303 min-1. The removal rate of GA markedly increased with the increasing pH (5-9), photocatalyst loading (2-8 g/L) and under 350 nm UV (compared to visible light). On the contrary, the removal rate of GA markedly decreased with increasing NaCl and initial GA concentrations (0-300 g/L for NaCl and 0.1-0.4 mM for GA). The removal of GA under natural sunlight was slightly better than that under 419 nm. A quenching experiment was also conducted;holes and superoxide were found as the main reactive species responsible for the removal of GA while ∗OH had a very limited effect.
