Co-processing of grinding sludge as alternative raw material in portland cement clinker production

This research aimed to investigate the potential of partial substitution of cement raw meal with grinding sludge as an alternative raw material in Portland cement clinker production. Cement raw mixtures with up to 3% raw mix replacement were put through a burning process in a high-temperature furnace. One reference and three modified mixtures, containing 1, 2 and 3% dry weight of grinding sludge were examined. XRF analysis results showed that CaO, SiO2, A12O3 and Fe2O3 in ordinary cement raw meal were within typical concentration ranges. The grinding sludge had high concentrations of iron, cadmium, chromium and nickel and was consequently classified as a hazardous waste. High Fe2O3 made the grinding sludge a good candidate for alternative raw material. Higher replacement of grinding sludge was found to improve burnability, reduce formation of major of cement compositions (dicalcium silicate, C2S and tricalcium aluminate, C3A), lower in silica and alumina ratios, but promote the formation of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and tetracalcium aluminateferrite (C4AF). Microstructural analysis of the synthesized Portland clinker revealed that the grinding sludge promoted formation of secondary C2S as well as caused color change of C3S. Thai regulatory leaching procedure was performed on the synthesized clinker and mortar samples. The concentrations of heavy metals in the leachate were found below the limits. Moreover, the maximum substitution of grinding sludge was found to be 2% of grinding sludge. Thus, this sludge has potential applications as an alternative raw material in cement production. © 2010 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Profenofos is a widely used organophophorous pesticide for several crops and is detected in drinking water sources. This study investigated the degradation of profenofos using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) compared with ultraviolet (UV). The factors affecting the degradation performance including pH, profenofos concentration, bicarbonate, nitrate, nitrite, natural organic matter (NOM), and aeration were examined. Profenofos removal efficiencies were 84% and 52% by VUV and UV after 7 min of irradiation, respectively (Initial profenofos concentration of 2 mg/L). Degradation of profenofos by VUV were 3 times faster than UV. The degradation rates decreased with increasing initial profenofos concentration. Direct photolysis at 185 nm and OH • played major roles for profenofos removal by VUV. Aeration enhanced the profenofos degradation and mineralization by VUV but not UV. Bicarbonate inhibited the profenofos degradation while nitrate (≤50 mg-NO 3 - /L) acted as a photosensitizer enhancing profenofos degradation. NOM from groundwater and surface water sources also inhibited the profenofos removal by VUV as high as 39% compared to deionized water. However, NOM promoted the profenofos removal by UV because degradation by OH • formed via NOM photolysis became the main degradation mechanism. The result of profenofos degradation under isolated NOM fractions elucidated that hydrophobic fractions had less inhibition compared to hydrophilic fractions. Identified products suggested the pathway of profenofos photodegradation were the breaking of the O-P bond and reduction of Br. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The dangerous chemical elements associated with nanoparticles (NPs) and ultra-fine sediment particles in hydrological bays have the capacity to move contaminants to large oceanic regions. The general objective of this study is to quantify the major chemical elements present in NPs and ultra-fine particles in aquatic sediments sampled from Guanabara Bay and compare these data to values determined through spectral optics using the Sentinel-3B Satellite OLCI (Ocean Land Color Instrument) during the winter and summer seasons of 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. This is done to highlight the impacts anthropogenic environmental hazards have on the marine ecosystem and human beings. Ten aquatic sediment field collection points were selected by triangulated irregular network (TIN). Samples were subjected to analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which enabled a detailed analysis using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Geospatial analyses using Sentinel-3B OLCI Satellite images considered Water Full Resolution (WFR) at 300 m resolution, in neural network (NN), normalized at 0.83 µg/mg. A maximum average spectral error of 6.62% was utilized for the identification of the levels of Absorption Coefficient of Detritus and Gelbstoff (ADG443_NN) at 443 m−1, Chlorophyll-a (CHL_NN) (m−3), and Total Suspended Matter (TSM_NN) (g m−3) at 581 sample points. The results showed high levels of ADG443_NN, with average values as high as of 4444 m−1 (summer 2021). When related to the analyses of nanoparticulate sediments and ultrafine particles collected in the field, they showed the presence of major chemical elements such as Ge, As, Cr, and others, highly toxic to human health and the aquatic environment. Waste Valorization from Brazilian Nepheline Syenite Processing as a Strategic Approach to Advancing the Circular Economy

The growing disparity between the high extraction of natural resources and low use of waste as alternative mineral resources will aggravate the scarcity of natural reserves. Therefore, the current linear economy model must be converted to sustainable economic models, such as the circular economy. To achieve this transition, it is important that waste recovery strategies are implemented with a continuous search for solutions for these materials. Thus, this study investigates the waste from the processing of nepheline syenite stone, to promote its valorization as an alternative mineral resource. The classification, potentiality, quantity/viability and applicability (CPQvA) criteria are used as tools to aid decision-making for the waste valorization. The environmental, physical, chemical, morphological, and durability characteristics of nepheline syenite waste (NSW) are analyzed. The results showed evidence for the substitution of NSW for up to 100% of fine aggregates and 25% of Portland cement in civil construction. Furthermore, NSW yields recoveries of more than 90% of potassium for use in agriculture, and up to 70% of iron ore for use in steelworks. Therefore, the results indicate that NSW is viable for different applications, contributing to industrial symbiosis and a strategy for advancing the circular economy. © 2023, The Authors. The purchasing strategy of commodities in a construction project is one of the things that determine the success of a project. Commodities in construction projects are very diverse, thus the commodity purchasing strategy will be focused on strategic commodities. Important strategic commodities are determined by contractors in managing logistics to support the implementation of the projects they are working on. This paper discusses the purchasing strategy for small-sized contractors who are usually working on building projects in Greater Bandung areas. The methodology used for this study were identifying strategic commodities by conducting a survey of 10 small-sized contractors in Greater Bandung areas, getting an assessment of strategic commodities, and to trace the historical data of the project, confirming the value of purchasing strategic commodities, then analyze the appropriate purchasing strategy by doing literature review while considering the nature of strategic commodities. The results of the study show that strategic commodities in buildings are sand, cement, concrete, reinforcing steel, brick, and glass.

Prediction of Deflection of Single-pile Nailed-slab by Using the Allowable Equivalent Modulus of Subgrade Reaction in Case of Additional Modulus from Modified Hardiyatmo Method

An equivalent modulus of subgrade reaction was proposed for analyzing the Nailed-slab Pavement System. This modulus is defined by accumulating the modulus of subgrade of the slab and the additional modulus of subgrade reaction which is contributed by a pile under the slab. The additional modulus can be defined by the Modified Hardiyatmo Method. The equivalent modulus of subgrade reaction only consideres a safety factor for additional modulus of subgrade reaction. In this research, a global safety factor will be considered for all modulus. This research is aimed to learn the prediction of the slab deflection by using the allowable equivalent modulus of subgrade reaction. The global safety factor was varied by 1.0; 2.0; 2.5; and 3.0. The slab deflection was calculated by using Beam on Elastic Foundation. Data of the nailed-slab and the soil were based on the previous researcher for a single pile nailed-slab model. Results show that the calculated deflection of the slab was in good agreement with the observed deflection. Increasing the global safety factor resulted in the over-estimated slab deflections. It means the design by using allowable equivalent modulus of subgrade reaction tends to result in a safety zone.

The effect of using asbuton with used waste diesel oil on the stability of the porus asphalt mix with hot mix cold laid method

The abundant availability of Asbuton in Indonesia should be proportional to the percentage of its use, however, in the implementation of pavement works, it is still dominated by petroleum asphalt, the price of which tends to be higher than the Asbuton. If you look at the elements in Asbuton, namely minerals and bitumen, it should be superior to petroleum asphalt. One of the factors where the use of Asbuton is not optimal is that the stability value of the mixture using Asbuton is still low compared to the mixture using petroleum asphalt. So this research aims to analyze the stability value of the porous asphalt mixture using Asbuton and waste oil as a rejuvenating agent with hot mix cold laid method. The research method was carried out by carrying out test objects with variations in Asbuton content of 5%, 5.5% and 6% with variations in fuel wastage rate of 0%, 2%, 3% and 4%. The total number of test objects is 36 samples. Then the Marshall test was tested to determine its stability value. The results obtained based on the test results are the highest average stability value at the variation of the levels of Asbuton 6%, 5.5% and 5% respectively 1295.3 Kg with 4% waste oil content; 1238 Kg with 3% used oil; and 773 kg with a waste oil content of 2%. Adding the Asbuton content increases the stability value; however, the level of used oil in the best results still varies. It can therefore be concluded that the highest stability value of a hollow asphalt mixture using an Asbuton content of 6% and a waste oil content of 4% with a value of 1295.3 Kg, meets the specification of the Road engineering Association of Malaysia (REAM).

Potential impact of climate change on water resources availability in Bantaeng District, South Sulawesi Province

As a result of climate change, the condition of the rain pattern will be more extreme, where in the rainy season, the rainfall will be higher so that it can trigger more floods and landslides; while in the dry season, the rainfall will be less added by increasing evaporation due to increased temperatures which can trigger drought disasters. The objective of this research was to what extent the impact of climate change on water availability which will be used as the main raw material for Municipal Water in Bantaeng Regency. The research method was descriptive qualitative with cross sectional approach. The results of climate change projections showed that the potential monthly average surface water discharge in Bantaeng Regency, especially the watershed used by PDAM, changed fluctuatively. During the rainy season, the projected run-off discharge increased by around 15%; while during the dry season it decreased by around 13% in the Nipa-Nipa, Gusung, and Kaili Watershed. This indicated that the vulnerability of surface water resources during the peak of the dry season (August) to the watershed with Municipal Water intakes, however, in general, the availability of surface water resources in the three watersheds was relatively safe as indicated by the projection results of the run-off discharge average annual rate increased by 4%
