Business processes are dynamic and constantly evolving. Contextual elements that had not yet been identified and represented can arise and influence the execution of each process instance in diverse manners. In this scenario, the identification of these elements is considered of great importance. This paper proposes a formalism for context associated with business processes that intends to identify the situation of an activity in order to subsidize decisions to be taken within the execution of a process. © 2012 IEEE.

An ubiquitous learning environment provides students with a teaching method that would be not possible to be performed in a conventional web-based course. The use of learning objects in a standard way consists of an effective way to allow, among other features, content reuse and interoperability between different Learning Management Systems (LMS). Thus, these contents can be reassembled to create new content. However, a problem that occurs frequently is the unsuitability of the content to the context in which the student is inserted. A context-aware ubiquitous learning support environment allows students participating in this kind of course to receive content that suits their needs (available physical resources, preferences, geographic location, learning styles etc.). Thus, this paper presents an agent-based approach to context-aware recommendation of learning objects in order to enhance the learning process in ubiquitous learning. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The increasing demand for Software engineering professionals, in particular Project Managers, and the popularization of the Web platform as a catalyst of human relations nowadays has made this platform interesting to be used for training this type of professional. In consonance to that, we have observed the dissemination of the use of games as an attractive instrument in the process of teaching and learning. However the project of a web-based instructional game that fulfills all pedagogical and technical requirements for training a project manager is not a trivial task. There is a gap between the theoretical concepts that are normally learned in traditional courses and the practical aspects required by the real tasks. In an attempt to contributes to that problem, this paper proposes the use of a persistent browser-based game intended for Risk Management as a component support in qualifying process of new professionals of Project Management. The game provides to the player some experience in a real context of Project Management, where new challenges are frequently posed to the enterprises. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Complexity and dynamism of day-to-day activities in organizations are inextricably linked, one impacting the other, increasing the challenges for constant adaptation on the way to organize work to address emerging demands. Market is demanding systems that are aware of organizations processes and able to evolve and adapt to new situations in everyday working activities. We argue that flexibility in processes could be managed in real time, by PAIS (Process-aware Information Systems), using context information collected in the work environment. This paper proposes CGAdapt, a context management architecture approach that aims to improve and automate dynamic process adaptation. We explain how process adaptation may occur in real time through an existent scenario using this proposal and discuss the value of context-awareness to reason about process alternative adaptations in a goal oriented approach. © 2012 IEEE.

Business processes modeling projects are increasingly widespread in organizations, which usually invest much in hiring expert consultants to do such job. These consultants come from various organizations, and have different experiences on how to perform the same activity. This paper analyzes how human-related capabilities influence the effort required to conduct a business process modeling project and discusses the results obtained from about 50 projects executed in a large Brazilian company. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Automatic detection of characteristic patterns of diabetic retinopathy such as hard exudates may help to an early diagnosis. Methods for automatic detection of hard exudates and optic disc are presented. Exudates detection involves a preprocessing stage, threshold selection and region growing. For optic disc detection a Bayes classifier is applied followed by mathematical morphology techniques in order to improve the final result. The methods here presented were evaluated using the IMAGERET database, which contains fundus images evaluated by qualified experts. In average, the area of exudates automatically detected overlaped with 60.75% and 63.91% areas defined by each of the two experts. For optic disc detection, sensitivity and specificity were 72.12% and 95.56% respectively.
