Zeolite functionalized with metal ions: A dual strategy for water purification − removal of sertraline hydrochloride and pathogenic bacteria

Sertraline hydrochloride (SER) is widely used to treat depression, anxiety, and other disorders, but its presence in global water bodies underscores the need for innovative water treatment solutions. This study introduces a novel adsorbent developed through a sustainable approach, where natural zeolites were functionalized with copper oxide nanoparticles (NZ_NPCuO) to enhance SER removal from contaminated water. Copper oxide nanoparticles were synthesized via a green method using Barbatimão (Stryphnodendron polyphyllum Mart.) stem bark extract. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), leaching tests, and zeta potential measurements validated the successful formation and chemical stability of the nanoparticles. SER adsorption tests revealed a maximum capacity (q_max) of 25.19 mg/g at 298 K, achieving equilibrium within 960 min. The Elovich and Langmuir models were determined to best describe the kinetic and isothermal data, respectively. Thermodynamic analyses indicated that the adsorption process is exothermic, spontaneous, and reversible. Potential adsorption mechanisms included hydrogen bonding, π-interactions, and electrostatic attraction. We also evaluated the antibacterial properties of NZ_NPCuO using the disk diffusion method against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, resulting in inhibition zones of 26 mm, 7.5 mm, and 14 mm, respectively. Thus, the proposed composite shows great potential for SER removal from wastewater and offers a promising alternative for developing effective antimicrobial agents for different proposals, particularly for microbiological water treatment. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This study presents an innovative approach integrating ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with ionic gelation encapsulation and freeze-drying to optimize the recovery and delivery of bioactive compounds from black mulberry leaves. UAE, under optimized conditions (60 °C, 2.5 min, 20% amplitude), increased the concentration of chlorogenic acid by 2.47 times compared to conventional methods (2.38 ± 0.11 g/100 g), producing extracts with high phenolic content (168.17 mg GAE/g) and strong antioxidant activity (1076.46 µMol TE/g, DPPH). The encapsulation process achieved 73.88% efficiency, retaining 72-87% of total phenolics and antioxidant activity in DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS assays. Encapsulated compounds showed thermal stability up to 200 °C, confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis, and high bioaccessibility (84.61 ± 0.89%) in *in vitro* digestion tests. This approach highlights the synergy between sustainable extraction and encapsulation, with sodium alginate offering an ecologically friendly method to protect bioactives and ensure controlled release. © 2025, The Authors. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hot-air drying conditions on the bioactive composition, antioxidant capacity, and technological properties of ora-pro-nobis (OPN) leaves. Drying time decreased from 300 min to 75 min, with increasing air temperature from 60 to 120 °C. There was an increase in total phenolic (1.2 to 2.4 times) and total flavonoid (1.2 to 2.1 times) contents when drying conditions were changed from 60 °C for 300 min to 100 °C for 105 min. The highest antioxidant activities were observed in samples dried at 100 or 110 °C, with positive correlations with kaempferol, catechin, trans-cinnamic acid, and hydroxybenzoic acid contents. Thus, drying at 100 °C for 105 min was considered the moist suitable condition for OPN leaves, because higher temperatures caused greater changes in color, technological properties, and powder microstructures. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Transposition of an anomalous left vertebral artery followed by endovascular treatment of descending thoracic aortic aneurysm using a branched endoprosthesis

The anomalous origin of the left vertebral artery from the aorta is the second most common anatomical alteration of the aortic arch. We present a case of a patient with a descending thoracic aortic aneurysm and an anomalous origin of a dominant left vertebral artery. The artery was treated by transposition to the left common carotid artery via a cervical approach, followed by endovascular correction of the thoracic aortic aneurysm using a subclavian branched thoracic endoprosthesis. The patient had a good postoperative recovery with complete occlusion of the aneurysm and patency of the carotid-vertebral shunt and left subclavian artery. © 2024 The Author(s)

The generation of agro-industrial waste has become a growing concern due to the high volume generated, which can result in increased environmental pollution. In this respect, the reuse of these materials as adsorbents would contribute to environmental sustainability. Flaxseed and orange waste are co-products that can be given added value when functionalized with metallic nanoparticles that have an antibacterial action, becoming an alternative for water contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms, an increasingly recurring problem in the world due to the quality of the water consumed and distributed to the population. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to develop adsorbents with brown flaxseed and orange peel waste impregnated with copper and silver nanoparticles using green synthesis to evaluate the antibacterial activity of these adsorbents against two bacterial strains, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in contaminated water. For the synthesis of the nanomaterials, copper and silver nitrates were used as precursors, and Moringa oleifera leaf extract as a reducing agent. For the microbiological tests, MIC and MBC were initially evaluated. Subsequently, adsorption, bacterial growth curve, and time-kill tests were carried out for E. coli and P. aeruginosa. The antibacterial and bactericidal activities of the functionalized materials were demonstrated. The proposed adsorption mechanism reported that increasing the mass favored a higher percentage of bacterial reduction. However, the adsorbents functionalized with copper oxide nanoparticles showed better results against the bacteria under study, using the lowest mass of material (0.05 g), achieving a 99 % reduction of bacterial biomass after 24 h of treatment. In addition, the inhibition of E. coli and P. aeruginosa biomass was effectively observed after 2 h of treatment, demonstrating that these materials have a high potential for controlling these microorganisms in water. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

The use of polysaccharides in drug delivery systems has attracted increasing interest due to their functional properties. Among these, alginate (ALG) and chitosan (CH) are promising candidates for sustained drug delivery as they respond to pH, ensuring that the compound is released in a desired area. In this research physical hydrogels based on alginate and chitosan (ALG/CH) were prepared by varying the synthesis parameters (ALG at ALG/CH ratio, pH and speed stirring) and the effects of such parameters on hydrogels’ chemical and physical structure were accessed through several techniques. Also, the effects synthesis parameters on fractional release (Fmax), half time (t1/2) and percentage encapsulation efficiency (EE%), as the evaluated responses, were statically measured using a factorial design. Analysis through Raman and FTIR spectroscopies revealed the modes and bands corresponding to the precursors, confirming the formation of physically cross-linked hydrogels. The porous structure of the materials was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The swelling capacities of the hydrogels were analyzed at different pHs (5.4 and 7.4) and demonstrated that absorption increases in slightly acidic media. TG/DTG and Micro-CT analyzes of the sample with the greatest swelling showed that the degradation of the hydrogel occurs in two endothermic events and that the material possesses several sized and interconnected pores. The doxorubicin (DOX) release study showed that the release rate is higher as the higher proportion of CH relative to ALG. The factorial design analysis indicated the statistically significant factors in the DOX release tests. Thus, the results suggest that ALG/CH hydrogels can be tuned during their preparation to achieve optimal structure for pH-responsive to be applied for DOX releasing system. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This study aimed to increase oxidative stability and enhance yam flour cookies' nutritional and antioxidant properties by incorporating lyophilized peach (LP). The cookies were subjected to two storage conditions: one with exposure to light and one in darkness for 60 days at room temperature. Four formulations were tested: a control (F1), F2 and F3 with 10% and 20% LP, respectively, and F4 with a synthetic antioxidant (SA). The cookies were a good source of protein and fiber. The incorporation of LP into yam cookies exhibited a strong antioxidative effect. Besides, the F3 shows oxidative stability comparable to the SA (F4), measured by TBARS values, under both storage conditions. However, light exposure influenced the retention of phenolics with antioxidant activity, with higher levels observed in cookies stored in darkness. The LP effectively inhibited oxidative processes, demonstrating its potential as an alternative to SA for improving the oxidative stability of yam cookies. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study aimed to develop and characterize fermented dairy beverages containing 0, 1.5 %, or 3 % (w/w) grape pomace (GP) and 8 %, 16 %, or 24 % (w/w) whey. Proximate composition and antioxidant, physicochemical, and sensory properties were determined. Given the high content of dietary fibres in GP (55.3 g 100 g⁻¹), its addition increased (p < 0.05) the fibre content of fermented dairy beverages by 66–156 %. The lowest lipid content (1.48 g 100 g⁻¹) was found in the formulation containing the highest proportion of whey (24 %) without GP addition. GP had a total phenolic content of 619.57 g 100 g⁻¹, leading to a 9–31 % increase in the total phenolic content of fermented dairy beverages. The major phenolics in GP were trans-cinnamic, caffeic, and ferulic acids. As a result of this phenolic profile, formulations containing 1.5 % and 3.0 % GP had higher antioxidant activity (p < 0.05). Furthermore, GP addition increased the viscosity of fermented dairy beverages, reduced syneresis, and altered instrumental colour parameters, enhancing colour and texture. The formulation containing 1.5 % GP and 16 % whey is particularly recommended, as it received the highest scores (p < 0.05) in the other sensory parameters. Utilizing GP and whey contributes to enriching the nutritional profile of fermented dairy beverages and strengthening the sustainability of agro-industries. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

The literature has already consolidated the importance of health regions for Brazilian public health. Complexity properties strongly mark such regions. In this context, there are abundant indications that health regions should be analyzed with approaches linked to the sciences of complexity. One of these approaches, the estimation of scaling laws, can describe important properties of socio-spatial elements. However, no studies estimate the scaling laws of Brazilian health regions. This research protocol can remedy this limitation, proposing the estimation of scaling laws of the previously mentioned regions, mainly considering variables relevant to Brazilian public health. Still, this paper can substantially mitigate other relevant limitations of usual research that estimate scaling laws of socio-spatial elements. These mitigations, which provide advances in the literature on estimating scaling laws, are given by the proposal of modeling (if necessary) spatial effects and estimating scaling laws for the entire population of the socio-spatial elements. According to the theory, the expected results are non-linear scaling laws, which will likely vary with space and time and coexist with relevant spatial effects. From such laws and effects, it will be possible to accurately characterize the performance of each health region through Spatial and Scale Adjusted Metropolitan Indicators and unravel spatio-Temporal properties, stabilities, and instabilities of sets composed of health regions. The expected findings of this paper can help rearrange health regions and improve the quality of information used in Brazilian public health planning. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.
