The present work aims at the application of different optimization strategies in the electromagnetic analysis of the Variable Reluctance Motor (VRM) through Finite Element (FE) simulation. Two case studies are investigated: the first one aims to optimize the geometry and electrical characteristics of windings of a single-phase VRM 6/6, minimizing copper losses;the second aims to optimize a restricted set of geometric parameters of a 4- phase VRM 8/6, maximizing the flux linkage in the phase coils per unit volume of magnetic core. In this way, by using the Finite Element Method (FEM), the results from the Differential Evolution (DE) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms will be compared and highlighted. Then, the magnetic flux densities of the motors are analyzed before and after the optimization. The results obtained show good efficiency of the algorithms, since the objective functions were satisfied with respect to the reference models. © 2022 Sociedade Brasileira de Microondas e Optoeletronica (SBMO). This study introduces the ongoing development of a methodology to evaluate charges for excess reactive energy in an electrical facility due to a low power factor caused by the integration of photovoltaic (PV) generation. Real-world data from the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil, were employed and clustered by season of the year, and whether falling in a business day, a holiday or during vacation period. The statistical distributions Johnson's SU and Proportional Reversed Hazard Logistic were selected to model consumption and generation patterns, while through a Monte Carlo simulation, the power factor violations and the charges for excess reactive energy for 2023 were estimated. It has been showed that the PV integration substantially lowers the power factor and increases the probability of violation, particularly during high generation periods. On the other hand, the carges for excess reactive energy are generally minimal, typically around 10% of PV integration savings. © 2023 IEEE.

The growing insertion of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the distribution system is a promising solution to mitigate the greenhouse emission issue. However, as the number of EVs significantly increases, the excessive charging demand of Fast Charging Stations (FCSs) may lead to instability problems in the distribution network. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-objective optimization approach for the allocation and sizing of Fast Charging Stations (FCSs) with the objective of minimizing their installation and operation costs, while maximizing the coverage for EVs. It is well-known that the integration of EVs results in increased power losses. As a consequence, in this study, an optimized planning of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) was also performed with the purpose of mitigating this issue. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) was applied to obtain the Pareto curve, which made it possible to minimize the objective functions for the 33-bus test feeder and 25-node transportation network, considering commercial and residential areas. Based on the solution selected by the Fuzzy Decision-Making method, it was possible to minimize the voltage deviation even with the insertion of the FCSs in the system.

The increment of losses can increase the operating costs and degrade the quality of power network distribution. The integration of renewable energy sources based on Distributed Generators (DGs) is one of the tools that can be used to operate distribution networks efficiently and have several technical benefits in distribution systems. However, these benefits require their installation in the proper locations with suitable sizes. Another approach that can be used to ensure efficient network operation is the network reconfiguration. The network reconfiguration is regarded as an operational approach for minimizing power losses. Thus, in this paper, two multi-objective optimization methods are used to reconfigure the distribution system and simultaneously allocate and size DGs to reduce power losses and investment costs, while respecting the operational constraints of the system. In this study, the adopted optimization methods were the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II and Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2. The IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus test networks were used to evaluate the proposed methodology.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) have experienced widespread adoption as a sustainable mode of transportation, leading to a significant increase in Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs) within the network. However, the installation of EVCSs can have a negative impact on distribution systems due to the increasing demand for EV charging. Therefore, this paper introduces a novel multi-objective optimization approach for the efficient allocation and sizing of Fast Charging Stations (FCSs), Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), and Capacitor Banks (CBs). The primary objectives are to simultaneously minimize investment and operational costs, voltage deviation, and power losses in the network. Furthermore, the methodology accounts for daily variations and uncertainties in DERs generation, load, and EVs traffic in order to ensure the optimization of the objective functions under varying network conditions. The multi-objective optimization problem is solved using Multi-objective Cuckoo Search and Fuzzy Decision-Making method. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology was demonstrated on the 33-bus test system. From the results, it was possible to reduce the voltage deviation and power losses by 14.24% and 19.02%, respectively, when compared to the original system.

Industrial automation systems use distributed computing architecture, comprising industrial networks with a wiring bus that is standardized to integrate their devices and monitoring process. A number of technologies, in a wide range of application levels, must operate in hostile environments, with high temperatures, humidity and magnetic interference. The Industry 4.0 applications requires that the communication infrastructure provide "last mile" communication services with a high level of reliability, which may increase costs and complexity of that infrastructure. Within such scenario, there is a growing demand for simpler and robust systems for monitoring and supervision of industrial processes. Powerline communication (PLC) is one of such systems that could provide ease of use and maintenance, since it uses the power system for serial digital data communication. This system has been commonly used in home applications, but it carries a great potential for the management of an industrial plant. Here, we present a new concept for the hardware, which collects field signals with PLC for industrial applications, using a Commercial-Of-The-Shelf (COST) modem. Three different setups have been performed, for a specific application that could be integrated to any industrial computer. The system has been experimentally evaluated in severe industrial environments, considering different noise levels, and provided reliable communication.

In electric vehicles (EVs), monitoring battery cells ensures safety and longevity. The Battery Management System (BMS) is responsible for this task, using variables such as State of Charge (SoC). This paper presents a comparative study between the Unscented Kalman Filter (UFK) and Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (PMC) methods applied to a pack using a simulation of a vehicle under the FTP-75 cycle with reference SoC using Coulomb Counting (CC). The Neural Network performed better with an RMSE value of 0.418 compared to 0.0593 for UFK.

This paper proposes a single-phase to three-phase drive system consisting of two parallel single-phase rectifiers, one three-phase inverter and an induction motor. It uses two parallel rectifiers without low frequency transformers, thus the reduction of circulating current is an important objective in the control system. In this paper the Modulated Model Predictive Control is used to regulate the grid current and minimize the circulating current between the parallel rectifiers. Simulation and experimental results validate the predictive control performance applied to the system with parallel single-phase rectifiers. © 2021 IEEE.

In this article, the applicability of an UHF circular printed monopole antenna with slotted ground plane was evaluated in order to detect partial discharges in power transformers. To verify the applicability of the antenna, two measurement batteries were performed: reflection coefficient (bandwidth) and gain in an anechoic chamber, to avoid external interference;and PD sensitivity tests from the comparison with the conventional method of IEC 60270, using for this purpose an oil cell with immersed flat-tip electrodes. These analyzes were performed for the design of an antenna with optimized performance. The obtained values for the antenna's bandwidth, size, gain and PD detection sensitivity make it possible to classify the antenna as efficient in detecting partial discharges in power transformers. © 2020 EurAAP.
