Currently, it is evident a great increase in the integration of distributed generation in the electric power system. However, despite the several benefits caused by distributed generation, this integration causes many modifications in the electrical system parameters, such as the charging and the fault current. Thus, the power system protection may not operate as desired, reducing the reliability and safety. Therefore, this paper analyzes the influence of the distributed generation insertion, based on the addition of the photovoltaic system in the IEEE 13-Node Test Feeder, by using Genetic Algorithms to coordinate directional overcurrent relays in this feeder. From the results, it was possible to notice a considerable modification in the load and fault current, besides that, the developed Genetic Algorithm was able to reduce the objective function effectively respecting the established constraints. So the relays presented in the IEEE 13-Node test feeder with high integration of distributed generation were optimally coordinated. © 2019 IEEE.

This article proposes the use of a controlled current source as a photovoltaic generator, due the fact that recent work shows that this choice provides faster processing speed and agile implementation to obtain the power flow. This phasorial analysis will be tested using, with some considerations, the 13-Node Test Feeder topology and its input data. Initially, no distributed generation will be considered connected to the feeder and, for a second analysis, photovoltaic distributed generation will be inserted in the system to perform the power flow calculation with the proposed model. The reference simulator will be the Knowledge's Virtual Academy (KVA), because it is a free-access software with a high-level solver to perform the numerical calculation. While the proposed methodology will be implemented in the sotfware Matlab. This study compares and analyze the voltage magnitude, mainly, and angle values obtained for both methods, the KVA result and the proposed method, for the scenarios with and without distributed generation. © 2019 IEEE.

The grid codes are expecting that the small-scale photovoltaic generators (SCPVG) have reactive power capability (RPC) and participate supporting the grid during abnormal events. However, the high integration of SCPVG into distribution systems could change their operation because of the node voltage variation. This paper aims to analyze the impacts of grid voltage support in distribution feeders with high integration of SCPVG. The penetration scenario of 100% of SCPVG with RPC was created on IEEE 13 and 34-Node Distribution Test Feeders and three line-to-ground (3LG) and line-to-ground (LG) faults were applied at the farthest nodes from substations. During faults, the node voltage raised up to 37.08% for the 3LG faults and 36.79% for the LG faults. Moreover, the penetration level of SCPVG decreased to 15.5% during 3LG faults and 71.3% during LG faults due to the disconnection or change of SCPVG operation. The penetration level during faults tends to be lower than before it, and the voltage variation can impact on the SCPVG operation. Additionally, the change of the SCPVG operation may impact on short-circuit level of the feeder. © 2019 IEEE.

In this article, the applicability of an UHF circular printed monopole antenna with slotted ground plane was evaluated in order to detect partial discharges in power transformers. To verify the applicability of the antenna, two measurement batteries were performed: reflection coefficient (bandwidth) and gain in an anechoic chamber, to avoid external interference; and PD sensitivity tests from the comparison with the conventional method of IEC 60270, using for this purpose an oil cell with immersed flat-tip electrodes. These analyzes were performed for the design of an antenna with optimized performance. The obtained values for the antenna's bandwidth, size, gain and PD detection sensitivity make it possible to classify the antenna as efficient in detecting partial discharges in power transformers.

In this paper, we present a methodology to make an autonomous drone fly through a sequence of gates only with on-board sensors. Our work is a solution to the AlphaPilot Challenge, proposed by the Lookheed Martin Company and the Drone Racing League. First, we propose a strategy to generate a smooth trajectory that passes through the gates. Then, we develop a localization system, which merges image data from an on-board camera with IMU data. Finally, we present an artificial vector field based strategy used to control the quadcopter. Our results are validated with simulations in the official simulator of the competition and with preliminary experiments with a real drone.

This paper presents a light-emitting diode (LED) driver with dimming capability for street lighting application. The power reprocessing is reduced by the use of a partial cascade structure, which requires an isolated converter at the reprocessing stage. A SEPIC converter is used in discontinuous conduction mode of current for power factor correction. At the power control stage, a flyback converter is used in discontinuous current mode, reprocessing only 20% of the total output power. A proportional integral (PI) controller maintains the output current regulated. Through the methodology employed it was possible to reduce the capacitances of the circuit and substitutes the electrolytic technology for capacitances with longer lifespan. Experimental results, obtained with a 70 W prototype shows that the circuit complies with the IEEE Std. 1789-2015 over the entire operating range. In addition, due the low total harmonic distortion of the input current, the prototype complies with the IEC 61000-3-2 Class C. The measured results for efficiency and power factor were above 90% and 0.99, respectively.

The growth of Renewable Distributed Generations (RDG) presents both, a solution to common problems of traditional energy sources - such as the environmental impact and losses in transmission and distribution - and a challenge to appropriate control a large number of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). The feasibility of such control depends on adequate communication protocols that, among other features, need to address the security requirements of DER applications. Modbus/TLS was presented in previous work as a possible protocol for direct DER communications and analyzed with respect to bulk data transfer. This paper extends such analysis, evaluating the connection time for multiple key exchange algorithms configurations, discussing possible impacts and proposing alternatives for environments where the observed connection times are prohibitive.

The power SCADA systems have been undergoing several upgrades over the years. At first, these systems were based only on isolated processes, without the need to connect in a global network, such as the Internet. In recent years, the access to such an open network has been critical for the SCADA systems, due to the need for data exchange across large areas, between geographically remote industrial plants, or even because of the demand for remote applications. Despite the SCADA systems have advantages by being now connected to a network such as the Internet, several problems can arise due to that. For example, such a connection makes it possible for an intruder to compromise the whole system. SCADA systems are essential in the new concept of smart grids and are widely used in the monitoring and control of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) based on photovoltaics. In that context, this paper presents an overview of the main attacks found and documented in the literature, as well as possible techniques to detect such attacks.

Aiming to generate the maximum power available in photovoltaic systems, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms are employed. However, with the increased penetration of photovoltaic systems in the grid, it is also necessary that these systems operate with limited power during voltage sags and overvoltage conditions. This paper presents a control method applied to a photovoltaic boost converter to provide a transition between the MPPT and limited power point tracking (LPPT) algorithms. This transition can help the photovoltaic inverter when is necessary to inject less energy to regulate the grid and interrupt the power injection during critical faults. The proposed control method was tested in a boost converter, using a power supply that emulates a photovoltaic module.

The Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) has acquired a 5.441 kWp solar photovoltaic distributed generator, which will be installed over the roofs of the buildings of the Goiabeiras Campus in the city of Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil. Knowing that a big amount of active power will be injected in the Goiabeiras Campus' feeder, while the consumed reactive power will remain the same, the influence of the solar plant over the power factor has been studied. This paper employed data from a meteorological automatic station located in the campus and metering record data to estimate the power factor. Results allow to state that a significant decrease in power factor may be observed in hour intervals with big generation. Nevertheless, results show that possible charges due to extra reactive power are not significant.
