Valorization potential of coffee capsule waste: an updated bibliometric review

In recent years, coffee capsule waste has been generated on an increasingly large scale worldwide, but disposing of it in an environmentally sustainable and economical manner still poses major challenges. This work maps the original scientific production focused on the valorization of coffee capsule waste through a bibliometric review based on scientific articles published in the last 10 years (from 2014 to 2024) in the Scopus database. The review identified different ways of valuing coffee capsule waste, including the development of composite materials, composting, energy production, jewelry and decorative items, and the construction of supercapacitors and sensors. Some significant aspects were also emphasized: (i) this subject has a high potential for further growth;(ii) the published articles considered only part of the components of the coffee capsule waste;and (iii) most of the published articles were based on laboratory-scale experiments. Thus, the valorization of coffee capsule waste requires even more development. To address these challenges, manufacturers, consumers, researchers, governments, and the recycling industry should make a joint effort to develop innovative solutions that enable the complete valorization of coffee capsule waste in an environmentally friendly way. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Self SOC Estimation for Second-Life Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are the mainstream technology for energy storage in several industrial segments, such as mobility and stationary systems for solar, wind, or other alternative energy source. This technology has a long lifetime, low self-discharge, high capacity and density, and can store energy longer. Despite that, LIB is suitable to supply power for electric mobility if its state of health (SOH) is higher than 80%. Then, an alternative for batteries with SOH below that is recycling or second-life batteries (SLB). The first is expensive and complex;only some companies retain the technology. Still, the SLB can be an excellent solution to maintaining LIBs in operation for slow vehicles or stationary systems. However, SLB requires intelligent battery management systems (BMS) because the packs are composed of cells with different characteristics, which makes the operation more difficult. This work presents a system consisting of two Machine Learning (ML) layers to automatically estimate the state of charge (SOC) of SLB independent of the battery’s capacity or age. In the first phase, a Random Forest (RF) model was built and trained to discover the curve capacity of different SLB characteristics and capacities. After the capacity curve selection, in the second phase, a new RF model was built and trained for each capacity curve to make SOC inferences of the batteries. The discharge data curve of one hundred batteries was used for the development, whereas eighteen were used for the training and eighty-two for tests. The results indicated a root square mean error (RSME) below 45 mAh for the capacity estimation (phase 1), and an RSME below 0.87% was found in the second phase for the SOC estimation. Finally, the capacity and SOC models have been inserted in a Raspberry system to measure the main parameters of SLB (voltage and current) and make inferences in real time independent of the cell’s age. PLA/jute fabric laminate composites: influence of weight percentage on mechanical properties and fracture behavior

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a widely studied and characterized bio-based polymer with biodegradable characteristics. Its use in environmentally friendly composite laminates is a recent field of research. In this work, we prepared eco-friendly PLA/Jute laminate composites and PLA flat sheets of 2 mm thickness using compression molding. Various experiments were performed to obtain composite plates with excellent quality. However, the successful configuration was the interleaved arrangement of PLA pellets/Jute fabrics stacking/PLA pellets. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed no voids or delaminations, so the PLA pellets adequately impregnated the jute fiber fabrics. The number of jute fiber layers strongly influenced the mechanical properties of PLA. The stiffness of the composites increased progressively up to 145% compared to neat PLA, with an inverse behaviour in ductility, which decreased up to 60% in the composite with four layers of jute fiber fabrics. The strength did not show a clear trend and was attributed to the weight fraction of PLA. When the weight fraction is predominantly PLA, fracture occurs due to the brittleness of PLA, but when the weight fraction is mainly jute fiber, the tensile strength increases, and fracture occurs due to fiber failure. In all cases, PLA and the composites showed brittle behaviour. The storage modulus was noticeably improved by the stiffness provided by the jute fiber fabric layers, even above the glass transition temperature, where the thermomechanical properties of PLA were inferior. The trend in fracture behaviour shown by PLA/Jute laminates is almost the same as that previously observed in the mechanical behaviour under tension, indicating that the weight fraction strongly influences the impact strength of PLA/Jute composites. Bioactive whey peptides: a bibliometric and functional overview

The objective of this research was to examine bioactive peptides derived from whey, focusing on their functional properties and potential applications in food and therapeutics. The research began with a bibliometric analysis, mapping scientific progress and research trends related to these peptides, particularly in key areas such as antioxidant and antihypertensive activities. Subsequently, a systematic literature review was conducted to investigate extraction and purification methods, as well as the biological activities of whey peptides, including their ability to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme, modulate the immune system, and act as antimicrobial agents. The findings revealed that whey peptides, primarily obtained through the enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins such as lactalbumin and lactoglobulin, have a significant capacity to neutralize free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative stress, a key factor in preventing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders and cancer. Additionally, there is increasing interest in incorporating these peptides into functional foods due to their health benefits beyond basic nutrition. The bibliometric analysis indicated that this research area is expanding rapidly, with the potential to influence the development of novel food products that integrate nutrition and therapeutic benefits. Advances in extraction technologies and applications of whey peptides could drive major innovations in food biotechnology, reinforcing the need for further research to fully explore the potential of these bioactive compounds. © The Author(s) 2025.

This study aimed to evaluate two methods of producing active cassava starch foams: one through the incorporation of a clay hybrid into the formulation, which contained 18.88 wt% of thyme essential oil, and the other through the application of the essential oil to the surface of the foams. For the latter, the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of this substance were adopted, which were 12.5 and 25% (v.v−1), respectively. When comparing the incorporation techniques, the foam containing the clay hybrid exhibited greater thermal stability. However, the sample in which 25% (v.v−1) of the essential oil was applied to the surface presented smaller and more closed-air cells, a 73% higher impact resistance, and 18.22% lower water absorption rate. This sample also presented inhibition zones of 2,82 ± 0,22 cm; 2,85 ± 0,15 cm, and 2,39 ± 0,22 cm against S. aureus, S. enterica and E. coli, respectively. Although the presence of thyme essential oil was confirmed via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in the foam containing the clay hybrid, this sample did not exhibit antimicrobial properties. Therefore, among the methods analyzed, surface application was the most effective, representing a promising alternative for application in food packaging, especially for products containing low water content.

The incorporation of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) and metakaolin in high-strength microconcrete offers a promising strategy to enhance performance while reducing environmental impact through clinker substitution. This study evaluates the feasibility and sustainability of SAP-modified microconcretes by analyzing fresh and hardened-state properties, autogenous shrinkage, and microstructural characteristics. Three microconcrete and paste mixes were investigated: a reference mix and two containing 0.15 % and 0.30 % SAP by cement mass, all with 10 % metakaolin substitution and a constant water/cement ratio without additional curing water. The results demonstrated that SAP effectively mitigated autogenous shrinkage, with MKSAP30 reducing shrinkage by 53 % compared to the reference mix. Microstructural analysis revealed a significant refinement in the pore network, reducing the average pore diameter from 508.76 µm (MKREF) to 214.65 µm (MKSAP30), despite an increase in total porosity. Moreover, SAP-modified mixes exhibited improved hydration efficiency, as evidenced by increased C-S-H formation and calcium hydroxide content in thermogravimetric analysis. The elastic modulus increased by 5.2 % and 13.9 % for MKSAP15 and MKSAP30, respectively, suggesting that enhanced hydration and pozzolanic activity offset the expected mechanical loss due to porosity. These findings highlight the dual benefits of SAP incorporation: improving concrete performance while promoting sustainability. The synergy between SAP and metakaolin enhances durability and mechanical properties, making SAP-modified microconcrete a viable solution for high-performance and environmentally friendly construction applications. © 2025 The Authors

In this study, a robust Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controller was developed and evaluated for the Bebop 2 quadrotor drone. Polytopic uncertainties in the dynamic model were taken into account in the control design, ensuring robustness. The drone's localization was achieved using fiducial markers and a Kalman Filter for state estimation, integrating visual and positional data. The controller design utilized Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) to optimize performance while accounting for system constraints. A circular trajectory in three-dimensional space was employed to assess the controller's effectiveness in simulation. Results demonstrated precise trajectory tracking, stability, and robust performance despite parameter uncertainties. These findings highlight the applicability of the proposed framework for real-world scenarios involving underactuated UAVs.

Cancer Cell Classification From Peripheral Blood Smear Data Using the YOLOv8 Architecture

The accurate classification of cancer cells in the peripheral blood is essential for the diagnosis of leukemia and has traditionally been carried out by analyzing laboratory images. In this context, the use of deep learning techniques facilitates decision-making and accelerates the early diagnosis of the disease, allowing preventive measures to be adopted for the patient. This study explores the application of the YOLOv8 deep learning architecture for the classification of cancer cells in blood smear images owing, to its ability to perform this task quickly and accurately. The models were trained on two datasets, ALL and C-NMC Leukemia, and evaluated using top-1 accuracy, top-5 accuracy and loss metrics. The proposed approach achieved a top-1 accuracy of 99.982% and top-5 accuracy of 100% on the validation and test subsets of the ALL dataset respectively, with a final loss of 0.02952. For the C-NMC Leukemia dataset, the model obtained 66.897% and 89.612% top-1 accuracy in the validation and test subsets, respectively, while maintaining 100% top-5 accuracy in both subsets, with a loss of 0.18289. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of YOLOv8 in classifying cancer cells, particularly in the ALL set. However, future strategies such as expanding the data set and fine-tuning the hyperparameters could contribute to better generalization of the model to different data distributions.

Object segmentation is one of the main activities for the robot to create a sense of its environment. This task is a precursor to other activities, such as autonomous navigation in a given environment. Through sensors such as LiDAR, it's possible to generate high-resolution three-dimensional maps of the environment in which the robot is located, thus enabling their interpretation so that tasks such as object segmentation can be performed. In this article, the DBSCAN and HDBSCAN unsupervised clustering methods are explored. Results in a simulated environment in Gazebo together with Robot Operating System ROS framework for capturing sensory data from LiDAR Livox Mid-70 coupled to a mobile robot show the performance of such techniques through comparisons.

Plastic-based goods are commonly used in daily life, but their waste poses significant environmental challenges due to its durability. This study investigates the use of recycled plastic as an artificial coarse aggregate in asphalt mixtures, specifically assessing the effects of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) on Hot Rolled Sheet Wearing Course (HRS-WC) mixtures. The objectives are to evaluate the physical properties of the artificial coarse aggregates, identify the optimal asphalt content and Marshall characteristics, and determine the maximum feasible substitution level for these aggregates. A test specimen (briquette) was produced for the Marshall test to assess the mixture properties. Our findings indicate that the maximum allowable substitution of HDPE plastic in HRS-WC mixtures is 42%. With an optimal asphalt content of 7.30%, HDPE substitution levels of 30%, 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50% yielded the highest stability at 45% (1176.696 kg), the highest VMA at 30% (21.250%), and the highest VIM within specifications at 30% (4.998%). The highest VFB value was observed at 45% (88.767%), while the highest Marshall Quotient was at 30% (364.527 kg/mm). The study recommends a maximum HDPE plastic waste substitution level of 40%, highlighting the potential for using HDPE plastic waste in asphalt mixtures to promote more sustainable construction practices. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing.
