The presence of toxic substances in the environment has increased due to population growth, urbanization, industrialization, as well as changes in people's lifestyles. Among many technologies, adsorption has proven to be an effective and inexpensive technique for water and wastewater treatment. Biochar has been identified as a promising and low-cost material, which can be produced from various carbonaceous materials with different origins, compositions, and processing methods. Consequently, the interaction between biochars and adsorbate species is not simple and may involve different adsorption mechanisms, such as van der Waals forces, electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, ion-exchange, hydrophobic interactions, π-interactions, co-precipitation, partition, and pore-filling. In addition, many operating conditions can affect the performance of adsorption processes. However, the development of biochars as competitive adsorbent materials depends on standardization, continuous-supply, application, and regulation. Thus, this paper discusses the challenges, the operating conditions, and the adsorption mechanisms to remove organic and inorganic micropollutants using biochar. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

In recent decades, the ever-increasing demand for electricity in large cities is leading the electricity distribution network (EDN) to an operational state of fatigue, especially at peak load times. Thus, the lifetime of feeders, transformers, circuit breakers, among others, can be compromised. In this context, load congestion, technical losses, and voltage deviations across the EDN can contribute to the high waste of electricity as well as to the worsening of the supply service. To face this problem, this paper proposes a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model that aims to reshape the demand profile (i.e., load reduction in peak periods without load rebound in the remaining periods of the day) of total consumers while the voltage deviations and technical losses are minimized. In the proposed model, the demand profile reshaping is carried out through direct (DC) and indirect (IC) bulk control of residential, commercial, and industrial loads, while the load factor (LF), i.e., indicator related to the efficient use of electricity, is improved. Due to the scheduling of these loads at certain times of the day, the occurrence of voltage deviations and technical losses can be mitigated by the efficient control of capacitor banks (CBs). © 2023, The Authors. This study evaluates the effectiveness of agroecological practices—organic fertilization and biofertilization—in enhancing ecosystem services in agroforestry and pasture systems. A field experiment was conducted over three years, comparing these practices to a control treatment and a natural ecosystem as a reference. Soil chemical, physical, and biological parameters were assessed, including soil organic carbon (SOC), microbial respiration, root density, and gene abundances of key microbial groups (Archaea, Bacteria, and Fungi). Organic fertilization resulted in a significant increase in SOC, phosphorus, microbial biomass, and root density, indicating improved soil structure and fertility. Biofertilization showed selective effects, promoting archaeal abundance but reducing bacterial and fungal diversity. Seasonal variation influenced nutrient cycling, with organic fertilization buffering against dry-season declines in microbial activity and nutrient availability. Aboveground dry biomass and litter deposition were highest in the natural ecosystem, followed by organic fertilization treatments in agroforestry and pasture systems. Despite improvements under agroecological management, the natural ecosystem consistently maintained superior soil quality and biological resilience. The findings highlight that organic inputs and diversified cropping systems enhance soil health but do not fully replicate the ecological benefits of undisturbed forests. In conclusion, agroecological practices provide viable alternatives to mitigate soil degradation and sustain ecosystem services in tropical Oxisols. Organic fertilization emerges as the most effective strategy, fostering long-term improvements in soil fertility and microbial dynamics. However, continued research is needed to optimize these practices for greater resilience and sustainability in Amazonian agroecosystems.

Gejlek or Galah is a conventional wood-made seed planting tools aid common used by corn farmers. The limited functions and heavy weight of the existing seed planting caused low productivity and long duration in planting activity. The aim of the research is to design and to develop seed planting tools which able to accommodate user needs. User-Centered Design (UCD) methods used to design product focused on customer satisfaction. 15 respondents involved in this research to measure productivity, practicality, reliability and ergonomic. Validity test represent by F-value produce result test in between 0.354 to 0.625 where Ftest > Ftab means reject H0 or seed planting tools design able to fulfil user needs and different from previous design. User test show how work load against pulse measurement improve 26.44% and Nordic Body Map decrease by average 25% which mean there are significant improvement in terms of work load and ergonomics. A recently developed technique in acoustic signal processing is the plane wave decomposition of the sound field. It consists of a transform that describes the sound field in relation to a directional domain, the wavenumber (angular) domain. In practical terms, the calculation of this transform consists of solving an inverse and ill-posed problem using regularisation that has as input a set of sound pressures measured at a particular frequency. To that effect, a sequenced microphone array can sample the sound field in randomly generated positions. The result of this processing, the wavenumber spectrum, can then be used to calculate the absorption of an interest surface in installation conditions, to reconstruct the transfer function in positions not previously measured, and can be evaluated employing polar mapping. This paper describes an experiment in which the wavenumber spectrum of the sound field near an absorbing surface was measured using a robotic arm to scan the sound field. The room transfer function was reconstructed, and the reconstruction error was assessed, limited under 10 % for most of the analysed frequency range and increasing rapidly at frequencies over the 1600 Hz band. Next, the wavenumber spectrum was plotted in polar maps, and the absorption of the surface was calculated and compared to the absorption calculated from flow resistivity measurements and commercial values. The polar maps and the absorption coefficient display behaviour coherent with what is expected following the literature. The in situ technique displayed a systematic underestimation compared to the model values. Still, its results are more coherent with the model and the theory than commercial information. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Radiological examination of the head bone is an integral part in the management of patients suffering from head trauma. This is because X-ray of the head bone is still quite significant in diagnosing fractures of the head bone. X-ray examination of cases of injury to the facial bones required two times the examination of the lateral head of high and low intensity x-ray to produce different image information due to heterogeneity of the head bone. At this time there is no method to improve image quality by combining the two images. in this study a method of improving image quality with fusion on high-low lateral head bone radiographs is proposed. This research is an experimental study to compare two variables measured from unequal (free) samples, where the group that is compared is more than two, namely the quality of lateral images of high intensity head, low intensity and fusion. Image quality assessment is done using a histogram which is then analysed using the Friedman test. The results showed that the average gray level on the highest histogram was sequentially at high intensity, fusion and finally at low intensity. The statistical test results obtained p value 0.007 which means that there are differences in the quality of lateral head images at high intensities, low intensities and fusion. Fusion image quality obtained grey level values that are between high and low intensity images, this illustrates that using of image fusion is able to provide more complete image information. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Carbon nitride (CN, g-C3N4) has emerged as a promising high-activity photocatalyst, despite some disadvantages like fast electron-hole recombination. The formation of CN-based heterojunctions is a viable strategy to overcome unwanted recombination processes. However, the precise control of the experimental parameters during the heterojunction formation is still needed to boost the photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, the influence of the mass ratio on the photocatalytic performance of CN/ZnO heterojunctions was investigated. The samples were obtained at room temperature via impregnation method and ultrasonic treatment. Heterojunctions were characterised by XRD and FT-IR, and interactions between the components were evidenced by the shifts in the diffraction patterns and vibrational spectra. The morphologies were investigated via SEM/TEM, confirming the formation of heterojunction interfaces. A strong influence of the CN/ZnO ratio was found on bandgaps, crystallite sizes. Photocatalytic activity was evaluated using rhodamine B dye in aqueous solution. High photocatalytic performances were obtained for CN/ZnO ≥ 1, and the best ratio was 2. Currently, waste generation in Indonesia is increasing;the amount of waste generated in a year is around 67.8 million tons. Increasing the amount of waste generation can cause other problems, namely water from the decay of waste called leachate. Leachate can contaminate surface water, groundwater, or soil if it is streamed directly into the environment without treatment. Between physical and chemical, biological methods, and leachate transfer, the most effective treatment is the biological method. The purpose of this article is to understand the biological method for leachate treatment in landfills. It can be concluded that each method has different treatment results because it depends on the leachate characteristics and the treatment method. These biological methods used to treat leachate, even with various leachate characteristics, also can be combined to produce effluent from leachate treatment below the established standards. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.
