Optimizing waste pre-collection model in Indonesian communities: comparing drop-off and door-to-door models through social cost–benefit analysis

Indonesia lacks an established waste pre-collection system resulting 90% waste ending up in open-dumping site. This study identifies a 35-m radius per drop-off points as the most optimal model. The City of South Tangerang, on 21 residential areas with a population of 63,157, being examine. Utilizing ArcGIS Pro and Python scripting, 12 scenarios were developed, model drop-off radii of 15–45 m and household limits of 4–32 per drop-off point, including combined models. Spatial clustering KD-Tree algorithm and Proximity-based Routing were employed to determine collection placements and walking distances. Heatmap and ANOVA tests evaluated conformity with residential characteristics. Model then organized into eight frequency schemes, utilizing motorcart and handcart systems with 4-day and 2-day pickup schedules for waste bank and in-house compost programs. This optimized model reduces collection time by up to 81% and costs by 50% compared to traditional door-to-door systems, achieving cost reductions of $30–$38 USD per ton and lowering CO₂ emissions. The discussion covers opportunity costs and occupational risk. Fault zones are known to influence the petrophysical properties of the rocks that accommodate deformation. However, the effect of a fault zone containing deformation bands and hydrothermal silicification on fluid flow remains underexplored. This study investigates the impact of the coexistence of deformation bands and hydrothermal silicification on the fluid flow based on a outcrop composed of conglomeratic sandstone within the damage zone of the Portalegre Fault in the Rio do Peixe Basin, an analog of siliciclastic reservoir in the northeastern of Brazil. Previous studies divided this outcrop into three zones according to the presence and degree of silicification: Zone I (non-silicified), Zone II (moderately silicified), and Zone III (intensively silicified). Porosity and permeability models were constructed for each zone, and numerical fluid flow simulations were conducted. Our results showed significant alteration of the permoporous properties, leading to significant fluid flow anisotropy. Zone I exhibited the highest oil recovery, with an average recovery factor of 34 %. Flow analysis revealed that silicification controlled the flow direction, and deformation bands were overridden by silicification. The silicification process led to a significant increase in anisotropy, which was crucial for enhancing sweep efficiency. This alteration elevated the tortuosity of fluid flow, thereby improving the lateral sweep efficiency within the study area. This process reduced hydrodynamic properties, causing strong permeability anisotropy, primarily attributed to mineral dissolution and the formation of preferential flow paths. The results from this research offer new insights into fluid flow prediction and production optimization for reservoirs with similar fault-related siliciclastic characteristics. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Building an Ethnic Food Ethic: The Case of the Ngigua Indigenous People of Southern Puebla, Mexico

Food ethics in the indigenous context is associated with a historical and profound relationship that indigenous groups have with nature. To address this relationship and identify the food uses associated with the maguey plant from a biocultural perspective among the Ngigua indigenous people living in the municipality of Tlacotepec de Benito Juárez in Puebla, the three main communities in the municipality of Tlacotepec de Benito Juárez that make use of the maguey plant were chosen. The study was carried out with a qualitative approach, using a semi-structured interview as a research technique. The analysis carried out recognises the importance of the maguey plant as a biocultural resource for the Ngigua in a context of ethical deliberation. Among the food uses associated with the maguey plant, the following are identified: pulque (a drink of pre-Hispanic origin) and red worm. Women play an important role, participating in 80% of the preparation of both foods. The cultural environment of the maguey is a way of life that, in the case of the Ngigua people, represents a strategic element for survival. In times of food crisis, the study shows how ethnic food strategies in a context of ethical deliberation can constitute an alternative for the design of food solutions in territories with food shortages. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The cement industry in Indonesia, heavily relies on coal, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Simultaneously, Java Island generates over 23 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually, with limited utilization for energy recovery. This study evaluates the feasibility of substituting coal with refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from MSW in Java's cement industry, focusing on environmental, economic, and technical aspects. Scenario analyses indicate that substituting 10%, 20%, and 30% of thermal energy with RDF could divert up to 8.7 million tons of MSW from landfills annually, reducing GHG emissions by up to 2.77 million Gg CO₂-eq. These reductions align with Indonesia's environmental policies and global climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. The economic assessment demonstrates the viability of RDF, with potential annual cost savings of up to $421 million. Beyond addressing coal dependency, RDF adoption supports circular economy practices, reduces landfill reliance, and mitigates environmental pollution. However, challenges such as infrastructure gaps and regulatory barriers require attention. This study provides actionable insights to guide policy formulation, foster industry investment, and facilitate the implementation of RDF-based energy solutions. By bridging waste management and sustainable energy practices, the findings contribute to Indonesia's renewable energy goals, emphasizing the practical applications of RDF for a more sustainable future in industrial operations. © 2025 The Authors

This study seeks to understand and estimate atmospheric longwave irradiance (R_ld) and surface net radiation (R_n) using parameterized models applied to semi-arid regions of northeastern Brazil. Studies on surface energy flows are of interest to areas such as environmental and agricultural sciences, and are of great importance in analyzing and managing water resources. Thus, this research could benefit the study region, which constantly experiences periods of water scarcity that affect agricultural activities and the lives of communities. An exploration of data gathered from micrometeorological stations spanning the period from 2014 to 2016 within various caatinga vegetation areas exhibiting distinct levels of preservation. This exploration involved comparative analyses between methods available in existing literature and those proposed by the authors. The biome under study is unique to Brazil and remains relatively underexplored in terms of comprehensive research and studies. In the R_ld analysis, parameterizations for days with clear and cloudy skies were considered, and the proposed models presented results that surpassed the results of most of the tested models in the literature. Among the models examined, the Crawford and Duchon (1999) model displayed remarkable efficiency in estimating R_ld within the study area. Furthermore, the models were fine-tuned to estimate the surface R_n for the respective areas of each micrometeorological station. These calibrations factored in both dry and rainy seasons for the R_n analyses. The calibration results were satisfactory, with r² values for the proposed models greater than 0.90 for R_ld for clear sky conditions and 0.94 for all conditions, and a high agreement was shown with values greater than 0.96 according to the criteria of Willmott et al. The widespread use of synthetic plastics causes environmental issues because of their nondegradability. In this study, biocomposite from Kluwih seed starch were incorporated with carrageenan and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) to improve their mechanical properties. CNFs were prepared using the TEMPO method with ultrasonication. The variables included starch (1, 1.5, 2 g), carrageenan (3, 4.5, 6 g), and CNF (0.006, 0.12, 0.18 g). The mechanical properties of the biocomposite were optimized using RSM. Zeta potential analysis confirmed the stability of CNFs, and XRD and FTIR analyses revealed improved crystallinity and functional groups. The tensile strength of the biocomposites was 12.08 kgf/mm², which is suitable for sustainable packaging applications. © 2025

Looking into the past to build the future: food, memory, and identity in the indigenous societies of Puebla, Mexico

Food memory has been determinant in the survival of social groups, the causes of its activation are varied (e.g. feelings, identity, need or challenge) and it is transmitted from generation to generation. These interactions have given rise to an ethnic food heritage that responds to cultural processes and territorial specificities. It is in this logic that this study is proposed, which aims to explore the dynamics between food, memory, and identity of two ethnic groups in the state of Puebla in Mexico in a context of health disruption. The experience of these two groups shows how food identity and memory is particularly strategic in the face of adversity, as is currently the case with the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022, The Author(s).

Alue Naga Beach and Ulee Lheue Beach are beaches located in Banda Aceh City, Aceh Province, these two beaches have a fairly large role in the fields of fisheries, transportation, and tourism. During the last few years, the population growth rate of Banda Aceh City has increased by 2% per year, this causes the volume of waste generated to be even greater, unfortunately, the municipal waste management office cannot manage it fully. Most of the untreated waste enters water bodies and has the potential to pollute the marine and coastal environment. So it is necessary to do research to provide an overview of the level of marine debris pollution on the two beaches. This study uses the transect method, the waste obtained is grouped according to size and type. The results showed that marine debris on Ulee Lheue beach was found to be more numerous and varied than marine debris on Alue Naga beach. Overall, macro waste with a size range of 2.5−1 m was the most commonly found and plastic was the waste with the highest yield with a density value of 65.8 g/m2, an abundance of 6.56 items/m2, and a percentage of 75%. © 2022

This study evaluated a coating based on Opuntia cochenillifera mucilage fermented with Lactobacillus gasseri and starch (MOCF-S) to extend the shelf life of minimally processed melons under refrigeration. The films were characterized according to thickness, solubility, water vapor permeability, optical properties, morphology, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal and mechanical properties. The MOCF-S film showed high solubility (96.43 %), greater water vapor permeability (6.13 g/kPa h m 2 ), and a smooth and uniform surface, suggesting compatibility between fermented mucilage and starch. It also demonstrated greater tensile strength and the presence of amide I bands in FTIR, indicating structural interactions. Antimicrobial activity was detected in the contact area against Escherichia coli (6.7 to 7.3 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (6.7 to 7.7 mm). After 12 days at 5 °C, the coated fruits maintained better titratable acidity and antioxidant compounds compared to the control, demonstrating the potential of the MOCF-S film in postharvest conservation.

Incorporating social vulnerability (SoV) into vulnerability assessments for protected areas provides critical insights for enhancing the resilience and adaptability of these regions to environmental hazards. This study aimed to develop and apply an integrated social-ecological vulnerability assessment framework for a forest-protected area, focusing on scales relevant to management decisions. We collected data from 70 villages within the protected area through structured surveys, interviews, and reviews of secondary socio-economic and environmental datasets. A total of 24 socio-economic and environmental indicators were selected, based on expert consultation and literature review, to quantify the indices of exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity, and SoV. These indicators were weighted using the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) to ensure objective and expert-driven prioritization. Subsequently, the SoV index, derived from socio-economic metrics, was incorporated as a key variable in the exposure assessment. This integration involved 18 additional ecological indicators measured across a spatial grid, enabling a fine-scale analysis of the protected area's exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity, and overall vulnerability. Integrating social and ecological dimensions allowed for a spatially explicit evaluation of vulnerability at the grid-cell level, providing granular insights for localized management interventions. The results revealed that SoV significantly influenced the levels of exposure and overall vulnerability across the study area. High SoV values corresponded to areas with elevated overall vulnerability, emphasizing the interplay between social conditions and ecological risks.
