Holm is an associate chemist in the Aquatic Chemistry Section of the Illinois State Water Survey (2204 Griffith Dr. Champaign IL 61820-7495) a division of the Illinois Department of Energy and Natural Resources. His research interests include ground water geochemistry trace-metal speciation and arsenic chemistry. Prior to joining the Water Survey he was a research assistant prof essor at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) where he studied the geochemistry of aquifer thermal energy storage. Before that he was a postdoctoral research associate in the Water Chemistry Program of the University of Wisconsin (Madison) where he investigated arsenic speciation and cycling in fresh water sediments. He received his B.S. in chemistry from Portland State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in environmental engineering science from the California Institute of Technology. Gregory K. George is' an assistant chemist in the Aquatic Chemistry Section of the Illinois State Water Survey (2204 Griffith Dr. Champaign IL 61820-7495). His research work has focused on evaluation and improvement of analytical methods for naturally occurring aquatic organic matter and on the development and validation of analytical and sampling methods for ground water oxidants. He was previously a research technician with the University of Illinois Institute for Environmental Studies where he determined dissolved 226Ra for a ground water treatment project. He received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). Michael J. Barcelona is the head of the Aquatic Chemistry Section of the Illinois State Water Survey (2204 Griffith Dr. Champaign IL 61820-7495). His research interests include ground water geochemistry contaminant detection monitoring and verification techniques with an emphasis on ground water resource protection and management. He has been involved in various aspects of ground water research and policy matters extensively in the past eight years. He has a B.A. in chemistry from St. Mary's

A model for the diffusion of gases through polymeric tubing was derived which predicts that the amount of gas transferred is proportional to the tubing length and inversely proportional to the pumping rate. The model was experimentally tested and confirmed for oxygen transfer through fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer (FEP) tubing using tubing lengths and flow rates typical of ground water sampling. Diffusion can introduce measurable concentrations of oxygen into initially anoxic water. Diffusive loss of carbon dioxide from water that is oversaturated with respect to atmospheric CO 2 does not measurably affect pH under similar usage conditions.

Motivation Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R package (BioTIMEr) to facilitate use of the database. Main Types of Variables Included The database is composed of one main data table containing the abundance records and 11 metadata tables. The data are organised in a hierarchy of scales where 11,989,233 records are nested in 1,603,067 sample events, from 553,253 sampling locations, which are nested in 708 studies. A study is defined as a sampling methodology applied to an assemblage for a minimum of 2 years. Spatial Location and Grain Sampling locations in BioTIME are distributed across the planet, including marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms. Spatial grain size and extent vary across studies depending on sampling methodology. We recommend gridding of sampling locations into areas of consistent size. Time Period and Grain The earliest time series in BioTIME start in 1874, and the most recent records are from 2023. Temporal grain and duration vary across studies. We recommend doing sample-level rarefaction to ensure consistent sampling effort through time before calculating any diversity metric. Major Taxa and Level of Measurement The database includes any eukaryotic taxa, with a combined total of 56,400 taxa. Software Format csv and. SQL.

Restoration of degraded drylands is urgently needed to mitigate climate change, reverse desertification and secure livelihoods for the two billion people who live in these areas. Bold global targets have been set for dryland restoration to restore millions of hectares of degraded land. These targets have been questioned as overly ambitious, but without a global evaluation of successes and failures it is impossible to gauge feasibility. Here we examine restoration seeding outcomes across 174 sites on six continents, encompassing 594,065 observations of 671 plant species. Our findings suggest reasons for optimism. Seeding had a positive impact on species presence: in almost a third of all treatments, 100% of species seeded were growing at first monitoring. However, dryland restoration is risky: 17% of projects failed, with no establishment of any seeded species, and consistent declines were found in seeded species as projects matured. Across projects, higher seeding rates and larger seed sizes resulted in a greater probability of recruitment, with further influences on species success including site aridity, taxonomic identity and species life form. Our findings suggest that investigations examining these predictive factors will yield more effective and informed restoration decision-making.

The hydrophilicity of the membrane surface plays an essential role in improving membrane filtration performance. Better hydrophilicity could facilitate higher water permeation and prevent fouling phenomena. In this research, a green additive from ginger extract (GE) was employed to improve the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane hydrophilicity. The PES/GE membrane was fabricated via the phase inversion method by dispersing GE powder in PES/NMP solution using sonication followed by mechanical stirred. The influence of ginger extract (GE) on the PES membrane was characterized in terms of hydrophilicity, morphological structure, porosity, water permeation, chemical composition, and mechanical property. Water contact angle measurements showed that PES/GE membrane with 0.1% GE has the highest hydrophilicity. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) indicated a porous finger-like structure on the cross-section membrane after the addition of GE.

Membrane separation technology has been extensively applied in separation processes. Improving membrane hydrophilicity plays a significant role in mitigating fouling phenomena and maintain membrane filtration performance. Fouling is a pore blockage of the membrane due to the interaction between hydrophobic molecules and membrane surface that cause membrane flux declining, shorter membranedurability, and increasing energy consumption. Incorporating inorganic particles to enhance membrane hydrophilicity is very attractive nowadays. Inorganic particles have unique characters due to their small size, excellent mechanical properties, and hydrophilic nature. This research aims to improve PES membrane filtration performances by employing nanocarbon and Fe2O3 as an inorganic additive. The membrane manufacturing process was carried out using a phaseinversionmethod., especially non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). The resulted membranes were analyzed by filtration soy protein solution to evaluate protein permeation flux and flux recovery ratio (FRR). The result experiments showed that PES/Nanocarbon could provide the highest FRR of up to 76.46%.

This research investigates bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) composite reinforced with Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) in terms of morphology and membrane functional groups. Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB) was used as a surfactant. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of addition CTAB on the membrane composite. Bacterial cellulose (BC) pellicle was produced from the extract of pineapple peel waste. Acetobacter xylinum was used as the fermentation agent. The solution of 1% NaOH was applied for removing the BC pellicle impurities. Mechanical treatment and high pressure homogenize process had been done to synthesize BNC. The composite membranes were synthesized by using a mixture of BNC, TiO2 1%, and CTAB with different mass percentages, 0.5%, 1%, and 2%, and then the composite solution was dried by the oven for 14 hours at 80 °C. Properties of the composite membrane can be known based on its morphology and functional groups. Scanning Electron Microscope was used to observe the morphology. The results show that a higher concentration of CTAB makes BNC structure became more porous, and TiO2 particles spread more uniformly. FTIR analysis was conducted in range of 682cm-1, 862cm −1, 1041cm −1 and 3421 cm−1. Successively, they are the position of the C-OH, C-H, C-O-C, and O-H function clusters.

The dispersion of SARS-CoV-2 in aquatic environments via the discharge of domestic and hospital sewage has been confirmed in different locations. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the possible impacts of zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposure to SARS-CoV-2 peptide fragments (PSPD-2001, 2002, and 2003) alone and combined with a mix of emerging pollutants. Our data did not reveal the induction of behavioral, biometric, or mutagenic changes. But we noticed an organ-dependent biochemical response. While nitric oxide and malondialdehyde production in the brain, gills, and muscle did not differ between groups, superoxide dismutase activity was reduced in the "PSPD", "Mix", and "Mix+PSPD" groups. An increase in catalase activity and a reduction in DPPH radical scavenging activity were observed in the brains of animals exposed to the treatments. However, the "Mix+PSPD" group had a higher IBRv2 value, with NO levels (brain), the reduction of acetylcholinesterase activity (muscles), and the DPPH radical scavenging activity (brain and muscles), the most discriminant factors for this group. The principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis indicated a clear separation of the "Mix+PSPD" group from the others. Thus, we conclude that exposure to viral fragments, associated with the mix of pollutants, induced more significant toxicity in zebrafish adults than in others.

Aim The urgency for remote, reliable and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which can track life underwater and on land. However, we lack a unified methodology to report this sampling effort and a comprehensive overview of PAM coverage to gauge its potential as a global research and monitoring tool. To address this gap, we created the Worldwide Soundscapes project, a collaborative network and growing database comprising metadata from 416 datasets across all realms (terrestrial, marine, freshwater and subterranean). Location Worldwide, 12,343 sites, all ecosystem types. Time Period 1991 to present. Major Taxa Studied All soniferous taxa. Methods We synthesise sampling coverage across spatial, temporal and ecological scales using metadata describing sampling locations, deployment schedules, focal taxa and audio recording parameters. We explore global trends in biological, anthropogenic and geophysical sounds based on 168 selected recordings from 12 ecosystems across all realms. Results Terrestrial sampling is spatially denser (46 sites per million square kilometre—Mkm 2 ) than aquatic sampling (0.3 and 1.8 sites/Mkm 2 in oceans and fresh water) with only two subterranean datasets. Although diel and lunar cycles are well sampled across realms, only marine datasets (55%) comprehensively sample all seasons. Across the 12 ecosystems selected for exploring global acoustic trends, biological sounds showed contrasting diel patterns across ecosystems, declined with distance from the Equator, and were negatively correlated with anthropogenic sounds. Main Conclusions PAM can inform macroecological studies as well as global conservation and phenology syntheses, but representation can be improved by expanding terrestrial taxonomic scope, sampling coverage in the high seas and subterranean ecosystems, and spatio-temporal replication in freshwater habitats.
