Measuring community sustainability: Exploring the intersection of the built environment & social capital with a participatory case study

Municipalities all over the globe seek to evaluate the sustainability of their communities and this process requires an interdisciplinary perspective. Walkability and social capital are important measures of sustainable communities that are not necessarily considered together in measurement schemes. Through a community-based case study, the following article examines the relationship between select measures of social capital and self-perceived walkability. Descriptive statistics demonstrated that higher levels of social capital existed in more walkable communities. More sophisticated analysis further supported this association. A community index was created from responses to questions about participating in civic engagement activities such as donating blood, attending a committee meeting or public hearing, interacting with individuals in various neighborhoods, and contributing to a community project. A trust index was also created with answers to survey questions about general trust and trust of neighbors and other members of communities. Multilevel models demonstrated that higher levels of walkability were associated with higher levels of participation in community activities, even after controlling for socio-demographic factors. Similar patterns were found for the trust index where higher levels of walkability were positively associated with positive responses to a variety of trust questions. Implications for sustainable communities policy and management are suggested. © 2012 AESS.

The N-oxidation of alkylpyridines by hydrogen peroxide is a reaction widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. This reaction is accompanied by the undesired gas-generating decomposition reaction of hydrogen peroxide. The oxygen generation, combined with the flammability of the alkylpyridines, represents a serious hazard of fire and explosion. In this work, a new operation strategy and reactor type for the N-oxidation of alkylpyridines are proposed based on calorimetrically obtained data. Previous studies on this system [8] showed that Langmuir-Hinshelwood type kinetics fits well with the Noxidation of this family of reactions and that increased temperature and catalyst concentration favor the N-oxidation reaction. New calorimetric measurements have been performed over an extended range of temperatures and catalyst concentrations in a closed reactor. These measurements confirm that the N-oxidation of alkylpyridines can actually be performed in a much more efficient and inherently safer manner if a closed reactor is used. The advantages and characteristics of such a reactor are explained and a preliminary design is proposed.

Stream channel and watershed management requires an interdisciplinary approach by multiple stakeholders with often disparate goals and objectives. Even single management goals (e.g. mitigation of property loss due to stream bank erosion and flooding, restoring stream channels and aquatic species habitat) require solutions that span multiple spatial and temporal scales. To deal with the complexity associated with goals such as reducing fluvial erosion hazards, sediment and nutrient loading and threats to aquatic habitat associated with geomorphic instability, the Vermont Agency of natural resources' River management program has been developing and testing 1) protocols for conducting field-based and remote sensing data and 2) a geographical information system (GIS)-based tool since 1999. These protocols and tools facilitate an understanding of channel instability and assist in developing strategies at appropriate scales to restore channel equilibrium. A hierarchical system of data-driven artificial neural networks (ANNs) has been developed to enhance these existing GIS-based watershed management tools for predicting channel geomorphic condition and inherent sensitivity at the reach scale. We research and develop these ANNs as an alternative model that can incorporate large amounts of data for use in the operational management of watersheds. The ANNs have been trained and tested on remotely sensed and in-field data along with corresponding expert opinions of geomorphic condition and sensitivity. The focus is performing sensitivity analyses and addressing inadequacies associated with assimilation activities that are closely tied to large amounts of hydrological-relevant remote sensing and field data. © 2007 ASCE.

Restoring complex vegetation in urban settings: The case of tidal freshwater marshes

Tidal freshwater marshes have diverse plant communities that vary spatially and temporally due to hydrology, animal activity, and other factors. Development of urban centers along rivers of the U.S. Atlantic coast has reduced the historic extent and quality of these and other coastal wetlands. Because the vegetation of these wetlands is more complex than that of salt and brackish marshes (where restoration of vegetation typical of natural systems has sometimes been successful), restoration of tidal freshwater marsh vegetation is likely to be more difficult, particularly in urban areas. Watershed urbanization alters hydrology, sediment load, propagule availability and composition, nutrient status, and other variables that together create an environment different from that of wetlands in less developed areas, possibly precluding restoration of typical marsh vegetation. Tidal freshwater wetlands were historically extensive along the Anacostia River in Washington, DC, but most of these were lost due to filling, dredging, or hydrologic alteration. Over the last decade, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has implemented projects designed to restore tidal freshwater wetlands along the Anacostia, which involved increasing elevation with dredged river sediment and planting native vegetation. To illustrate some of the mechanisms affecting vegetation development in restored tidal freshwater marshes in urban areas, I present a case study on one of these wetlands, Kingman Marsh, that also includes research at another restored wetland and two natural reference sites. Studies by my research groups indicate that the restored wetlands undergo essentially a planting-modified process of primary succession. Low densities of seeds are initially present in the substrate, and prolific seed dispersal into the restored sites results in high initial plant diversity comprised of plantings and ruderal (i.e. weedy) natives and exotics.
