Sustainability in practice: Analyzing environmental, social and governance practices in leading Latin American organizations' reports

Sustainable development is crucial for the competitive advantage of industries. However, implementing this business model faces challenges that can impact its integration and compromise the adoption of actions to address environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues that are of interest to stakeholders. To date, no in-depth study has presented the relationship between ESG issues and practical actions employed for sustainable development in companies within the Latin American context. Therefore, this article aims to evaluate the relationships between the main ESG issues and the actions applied to develop this theme in the Latin American industrial context, highlighting the main barriers, opportunities, and implications for this integration. As a methodology, a documentary analysis of 79 reports from Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina was conducted using the content analysis method. This analysis highlighted central concerns such as climate change, water management, waste management, biodiversity, local communities, diversity, and inclusion. Additionally, a trend of ESG thematic dissemination was identified, which is in an early stage of maturity and lacks studies to quantify and diagnose the environmental impacts of Latin American industries. These findings directly impact the empirical evidence of how the Latin American industry is neglecting social issues, is still developing studies to quantify its environmental impacts, and strongly adheres to the concept and theme of ESG. The conclusions of this study highlight three main points: (i) From 2018 to 2022, 47% of material topics were related to at least one ESG pillar, with a predominance of the environmental dimension, (ii) there was a trend of increased adherence to ESG and improvements in the materiality of reports, and (iii) it is recommended to enhance indicators, accelerate the sustainable transition, and integrate ESG themes into supplier selection and workplace safety to strengthen sus

Additive manufacturing is one of the pillars of Industry 4.0 and has been revolutionizing the global market through highly technological and groundbreaking products. One example is the use of additive manufacturing (AM) applied to the construction industry through 3D printing (3DP), which allows greater freedom in the development of new projects, with the use of more complex concrete geometric shapes, greater quality control., and less wasted material. The objective of this paper was to analyze how additive manufacturing, with the help of 3D printing, can help the evolution of civil construction. For this, a systematic literature review of articles published in journals between the years 2015 and 2021 was performed. After the final extraction, a total of 24 articles from 15 countries were identified. It was noticed that even in the face of all the potentials of 3D printing technology for civil construction, its development must be advanced in the coming years, especially in emerging countries like Brazil.

Business logistics have an undeniable strategic importance and organizations can reach new markets and improve service levels for their customers by outsourcing. To maximize the benefits of the relationship between a shipper (i.e. logistics buyer) and a logistics provider, an alignment of goals and objectives is required. Thus, this paper developed a model that connects the perceptions of both parties. The model was based on the trade-off matrix, the priority matrix, and the importance-performance analysis matrix. A case study was adopted, considering two companies located in Caruaru-PE, Brazil. This case study highlights the divergent perceptions between the companies studied and how the proposed methodology can help in directing actions that create synergy in the supply chain.

Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) are a great source of social impacts and are more vulnerable to have worse social performance on their workers than bigger firms. Thus, it is important to aid decision-making to optimize the social impacts of MSEs on their workers. Hence, the purpose of this study is to apply a quantification framework to the qualitative results of a previous social life cycle assessment study applied in MSEs and to prove whether the quantification of the social impacts on their workers can aid to decision-making in this type of organizations. The method follows a four-step procedure and uses customized score factors for quantifying the social impacts on workers and was applied in three MSEs from three service activities. The results show several social hotspots that impacts negatively on MSEs' workers (Freedom of association, Fair salary, Working hours, and Social benefits), thus, some actions, such as the encouragement of association of workers to labor unions, the increasing of salaries, the reduction of working hours and the provision of more social benefits, are suggested to enhance the social impacts on MSEs' workers. So, the quantified results of social life cycle assessment allow to recognize social hotspots, they are a guidance to realize in what issues MSEs are impacting negatively on their workers and, thus, it aids to the decision-making, and encourages MSE-owners to take actions on it, in order to be more responsible with their workers and more socially sustainable.

UNLABELLED:The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of sagittal lumbar spine postural abnormalities and associated factors among students in the federal educational system in Florianópolis. METHODS:288 adolescents (156 males and 132 females), aged from 15 to 18 years, who were students in the federal educational system in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, were evaluated. To gather data, photogrammetry was used following a specific protocol for postural assessment, and a questionnaire was used to identify the prevalence and frequency of pain, and the activities that triggered the problem. In the data analysis, descriptive statistics, Student's t-test for independent samples, chi-square test and Poisson's regression were used, with the significance level set at p<0.05 for all the tests. RESULTS:The prevalence of low back pain was 49.3%, with weekly frequency in 43.1% of the sample. The prevalence of deviation was 53.8%, and 90.9% corresponded to rectification of lumbar curvature, and this affected males more frequently. A significant difference in lumbar angle was found between the sexes; higher prevalence ratios of postural deviations were found in the male group. CONCLUSIONS:The prevalences of low back pain and lumbar postural deviation were high, but the relationship between these variables did not present significance. The main causes of the lumbar pain were sports practice or vigorous activities and remaining in a seated position for extended periods of time.

The purpose of this study is to propose a sustainable business development concept. For such purpose a research was developed of the literature on the several discussions that are focused on the approaches. It sets off from an approach exposed by Jabareen (2008) that relates the existence of seven different concepts. Despite the effort of that author be considered consistent in the sense of establishing a new "conceptual framework" for sustainable development, it is assessed that there are many "lacks" for the concept to be rendered in a univocal manner by the business organizations. Such impossibility in handling the issue implies in perpetuating distortions that result in a situation that is considered to be critical: the inconsistent use of the concept. In this sense, this paper seeks to develop a conceptualization from approaches that, in a strict sense, lean towards divergence. Thus, this paper proposes to assess the converging and diverging points and develop a synthesis that could be used by the production systems.

Recent innovation models, such as Open Innovation, shows a scenario that interactions between universities and companies can be important channels for stimulating innovation. Thus, the university patenting rights are regulated in many countries inspired by Bayh-Dole, to legitimize the interactions between the actors. However, according to studies carried out by the universities the ownership of intellectual property has brought both positive and negative consequences for the interaction between universities and companies in some countries like the USA and Denmark, for example. In this scenario, this paper proposes a methodology to assess obstacles to realize process of technological innovation of the UTFPR conclusion graduation's projects by the perspective of Brazilian Innovation Law. A survey was administered for students in the undergraduate course in electronic engineering/telecommunications. The results stand out a little interaction between the project of undergraduate students at the UTFPR with companies and industries and the fact that the main difficulty for the innovation of these projects are in the technology transfer process. Thus, we conclude that the Brazilian Innovation Law (Law number 10,973/2004) can be an important tool for structuring a body to stimulate innovation from universities projects. © 2010 IEEE.

In the activity of shelling mussel,pain complains and discomfort were analyzed,according to the use of Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire(NMQ) and the Protocol for Musculoskeletal Risk Assessment(RARME).These evaluations were integrating parts of Work Ergonomic Analysis and they indicated complaints related to inferior part of back(lumbar region),hips,thighs,and *** results seem to be related to shelling activity and to other stages of mussel cultivation as ***,the produced information aims to contribute to work planning and ergonomic interventions,favoring the safe work and with quality.
