Passive social network usage and life satisfaction among Vietnamese university students: a moderated mediation model of self-esteem and gender

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the role of self-esteem in mediating the relationship between passive social networking usage (PSNU) and life satisfaction, as well as whether the relationships between PSNU and self-esteem/life satisfaction as well as self-esteem and life satisfaction vary by gender. Design/methodology/approach: This research is conducted in compliance with the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association’s study on a subject of 304 students. Study participants are invited to participate in the survey by completing the anonymous questionnaire regarding passive social network usage, self-esteem and life satisfaction. Findings: The findings indicate that self-esteem mediated the relationship between PSNU and life satisfaction. Furthermore, gender moderated the self-esteem and life satisfaction relationship, and such an effect was stronger for females than males. Research limitations/implications: This study, adopting a cross-sectional design and self-report scale, examined the relationship between PSNU and life satisfaction. However, the short study duration hindered establishing a cause-and-effect relationship. Credibility concerns arose from participant-induced noise variables in the self-report scale. Future research should use diverse methods to validate underlying mechanisms. Despite limitations, the study revealed self-esteem as a mediating factor, alleviating the negative impact of PSNU on life satisfaction. Both male and female users are encouraged to engage in self-education, valuing their self-esteem for heightened life satisfaction. Originality/value: These findings contribute to the understanding of how passive social network usage predicts life satisfaction (mediating effect of self-esteem) based on social comparison theory and when self-esteem increases life satisfaction (moderating effect of gender) based on social role theory of gender differences. © 2024, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Contributions of Social Domain Theory for the Study of Exclusion: a Systematic Literature Review

Considering the negative impact that exclusion can have on individuals and society, psychology has invested in research in the area, from different theoretical perspectives. In the breadth of possibilities surrounding this area of knowledge, this article aimed to characterize the contributions of social domain theory (SDT) for the study of exclusion, through a systematic literature review based on the questions: what contributions to exclusion studies have been made by SDT and what methods are being used by researchers in this area for data collection and analysis? To respond, we searched for scientific articles on virtual platforms (SciELO, PePSIC, LILACS, and Capes Periodicals) and retrieved 19 articles after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that the theory’s main contributions for the study were diversity of themes found, although sexism and racism were the main types of prejudice researched as motivations for exclusions;judgments about situations of exclusion were associated with differences due to sociodemographic variables, the characteristics of the exclusion, and the context;studies on the role of emotions in judgments were also identified. Regarding the method used by the SDT studies on exclusion, there was a prevalence of cross-sectional and quantitative studies conducted with children and adolescents of the USA. This review showed that, despite SDT being recent and the inexistence of national articles following the adopted criteria, SDT has invested in studies that seek to comprehend which individual and contextual factors influence the acceptance or rejection of a prejudiced attitude of exclusion. © 2020, Associação Brasileira de Psicologia.

Counselor self-efficacy, multicultural competency, and perceived wellness among counselors in training during covid-19: a pre- and peri-analysis

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted how counselors-in-training (CITs) provided services to clients. The present cross-sectional causal-comparative study (N = 131) examined the differences between CIT (a) self-efficacy, (b) multicultural competence, and (c) perceived wellness pre- and during the pandemic. Independent samples t-tests and one-way between-groups multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used to explore group differences. Our findings suggest that CITs did not perceive significant negative impacts in these areas as a result of COVID-19. © 2023 Chi Sigma Iota.

Adolescence is a critical time for the cultivation of life purpose,also known as a meaningful long-term aim focused on contribution to *** with purpose,especially marginalized youth,report a number of positive *** with caring adults appear to be particularly helpful in guiding young people on their path to purpose,but little work has focused specifically on the role of *** qualitative study,approved by a Institutional Review Board,examines how twenty adolescents from marginalized communities describe their sense of purpose and its relationship to their *** sample size was determined based on saturation,a process in qualitative research when the researchers begin to observe redundancy in the *** content analysis,a major theme emerged:the role of mothers and their impact on purpose development on their *** showed that mothers helped their adolescents develop their sense of purpose through serving as a sense of inspiration,providing the adolescents with support,sparking a desire for the adolescents to make their mothers proud,and through the mothers and adolescents in engaging in conversations about one’s future.

This study examines the characteristics of Indonesia's scholarly output and its alignment with national development goals. This research focuses on three key questions: how Indonesia's research output can be categorized into driver, basic, specialized, and declining clusters;the extent to which these research themes align with National Research Priorities and the areas that require greater emphasis;and the correlation between Indonesia's research themes and its economic drivers, including export commodity sectors, to identify opportunities for enhancing national advancement. To address these questions, the study employs a scientometric approach, utilizing data from SciVal and keyword analysis while integrating economic data from the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics and the Observatory of Economic Complexity to provide a comprehensive and multidimensional analysis. The study employed statistical comparisons to assess the alignment of research outputs with national priorities and economic indicators. The study reveals significant trends in Indonesia's scholarly output across driver, basic, specialized, and declining research clusters, emphasizing the need for strengthened research efforts in sectors such as energy, business, management, and accounting, alongside targeted investments in fields like chemistry, immunology, and microbiology to bolster global competitiveness. A comparison of Indonesia's research themes with National Research Priorities underscores a critical misalignment that shows the need for a recalibration towards impactful and strategic research initiatives that are better aligned with national needs and global trends. Disparities between Indonesia's research output and economic driver sectors, such as mineral fuels and agricultural products, highlight opportunities for enhanced research investment to support better leading economic contributors and elevate scholarly impact. © 2025 The Authors

Sex differences in perceptions of sleep inertia following nighttime awakenings

Study Objectives: The influence of biological sex on sleep inertia symptoms is currently unknown. We investigated the role of sex differences in the subjective experience and objective cognitive manifestation of sleep inertia following nighttime awakenings. Methods: Thirty-two healthy adults (16 female, 25.91 ± 5.63 years) completed a 1-week at-home study with one experimental night during which sleep was measured by polysomnography and participants were awakened during their habitual sleep time. Participants completed a psychomotor vigilance task, Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), visual analog mood scales, and a descending subtraction task (DST) prior to sleep (baseline) and at 2, 12, 22, and 32 min after awakening. A series of mixed-effects models with Bonferroni-corrected post hoc tests were used to examine the main effects of test bout and sex, and their interaction, with a random effect of participant, and order of wake-up and sleep history as covariates. Results: All outcomes except for percent correct on the DST showed a significant main effect of test bout, with worse performance after waking compared to baseline (all ps < .003). Significant effects of sex (p = .002) and sex × test bout (p = .01;R²_M = 0.49, R²_C = 0.69) were observed for KSS, with females reporting a greater increase in sleepiness from baseline to after waking compared to males. Conclusions: These results suggest that while females reported feeling sleepier than males following nighttime awakenings, their cognitive performance was comparable. Future research is needed to determine whether perceptions of sleepiness influence decision-making during the transition from sleep to wakefulness. © 2023 The authors.

The goal of this study was to examine the effect of hearing loss on theta and alpha electroencephalography (EEG) frequency power measures of performance monitoring and cognitive inhibition, respectively, during a speech-in-noise task. It was hypothesized that hearing loss would be associated with an increase in the peak power of theta and alpha frequencies toward easier conditions compared to normal hearing adults. The shift would reflect how hearing loss modulates the recruitment of listening effort to easier listening conditions. Nine older adults with normal hearing (ONH) and 10 older adults with hearing loss (OHL) participated in this study. EEG data were collected from all participants while they completed the words-in-noise task. It hypothesized that hearing loss would also have an effect on theta and alpha power. The ONH group showed an inverted U -shape effect of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but there were limited effects of SNR on theta or alpha power in the OHL group. The results of the ONH group support the growing body of literature showing effects of listening conditions on alpha and theta power. The null results of listening condition in the OHL group add to a smaller body of literature, suggesting that listening effort research conditions should have near ceiling performance. © 2023 Thieme Medical Publishers, Inc..
