The present study determines the environmental quality and carrying capacity for the restoration of the degraded mangroves in Southeast Sulawesi. The physico-chemical conditions of estuarine water and its sediment nutrient contents were determined in both protected and unprotected areas, with no significant difference (p > 0.05) except for nitrogen and inorganic carbon contents of water. The current study found promising environments for the restoration of degraded mangroves in unprotected areas in Southeast Sulawesi. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Caffeine is an alkaloid present in a wide variety of plants. Currently the most consumed psychostimulant worldwide, its consumption is associated with several health benefits, including modulation of the innate and adaptive immune response, reduction of oxidative cellular stress, and decreased incidence of some cancers, including breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer among women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. The interaction between biomaterials and drugs has enabled a great advance in science for developing controlled drug delivery systems and has been used to treat numerous pathologies. This work aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of caffeine associated or not with polyethylene glycol adsorbed in microemulsion (MLP) on MCF-7 cells, phagocytic cells (MN), and coculture. For biological assays, ATCC (American Type Culture Collection, USA) cell lines of breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and phagocytes (MN) obtained from voluntary donors were used. The cells (MN and MCF-7) and coculture were treated with caffeine and MLP and incubated for rheological characterization analyses: flow curve and viscosity, oxidative stress: superoxide anion assay (), and activity of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn-SOD). Caffeine and MLP increased viscosity and blood and MCF-7 cells and affected the immunomodulation of oxidative stress metabolism of MN and MCF-7 cells treated with caffeine and associated caffeine to the MLP. These data suggest that caffeine is associated or not with MLP-induced immunomodulatory effects on MN phagocytes and MCF-7 cells, demonstrating the antitumor activity via oxidative stress and can be a complementary alternative for treating breast cancer.

Mercury (Hg) is a non-essential trace metal, toxic to living beings and complex to quantify and mitigate in the environment. In this study, 25 plant species native to an Amazon-Cerrado transition area were tested for use in Hg remediation. Species identification, Hg quantification in plant biomass and soil at each sampling point, and evaluation of Hg compartmentalization in each plant were carried out. The results were subjected to statistical tests and evaluated using translocation coefficients (FT), bioconcentration (FBC), and bioaccumulation (FB). The results demonstrated that the distribution and accumulation of Hg differed between species and between the parts of the plant evaluated. Soil was the predominant source of Hg in the study area. The study highlighted seven species with Hg phytoremediation potential. Five translocator species were characterized, among these a preferentially bioaccumulating and bioconcentrating species, in addition to a bioconcentrating species and a preferentially bioconcentrating and bioaccumulating species of Hg. Potentially accumulating species stood out, Blechnum serrulatum Rich. (Blechnaceae), Mauritia flexuosa L.f. (Arecaceae), and Montrichardia arborescens (L.) Schott (Araceae), all widely distributed in tropical regions, characterized as rooted, terrestrial, or amphibious and associated with ruderal environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Various species of the genus Citrus have grown naturally and were cultivated in Indonesia as a mega-biodiversity country. In recent years, the nutritional content and antioxidant activity of citrus fruits has been used to prevent of the various chronic and degenerative human diseases including potential as an antidote to viruses. Development of the potential and superiority of Indonesian oranges including Pomelo yellow orange (Citrus maxima Merr), lime orange (C. limon) and Sunkist orange (C. sinensis) are needed to be done with molecular characterization that begins with DNA isolation. The study was conducted with the aim of applying the Doyle and Doyle method for DNA isolation to all of the three types of oranges. The method for isolate DNA from plant usually use Cethyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) and Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS). The aim of this study is to isolate DNA from the orange leaves of Pomelo Yellow Orange, Lime Orange and Sunkist Orange with the Doyle & Doyle method. The results of the isolation of orange DNA were measured using NanoDrop. The results showed that the DNA of the three oranges had purity of pomelo yellow oranges 1,83, limes 1.8 and sunkist oranges 1,51. The concentrations obtained from each of the oranges were Yellow Bali Citrus 532 ng / µl, Lime Citrus 664.5 ng / µl and Sunkist Orange 888.6 ng / µl. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Coral triangle eco-region is hotspot of coastal blue carbon, and contributes to the global carbon cycling. This study aimed to elucidate the blue carbon dynamics in mangroves and their importance services as source of blue carbon in the coastal zone of coral triangle ecoregion. The blue carbon content in mangrove sediment was analyzed, while blue carbon production and its export frommangroves leaf litterfallwasestimated. The current COVID-19 outbreak continues to pique the curiosity of researchers from all disciplines. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in terms of masks and gloves are essential for moving the battle out. Developing a highly efficient PPE is crucial, not only to reduce the spread of virus, but also to protect people who work at the frontline. Here, we tested the potential effect of silver nanoparticles as antiviral agents based on their unique properties. When compared to imitative antivirals, elemental silver nanoparticles could attack many virus sites, reducing the likelihood of the virus developing resistance. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized and loaded on cellulose membrane scaffolds, polyvinyl alcohol polymer dressings, and mask fabrics. The new generation of fiber mats have been thoroughly described and tested against SARS-CoV-2 virus using Docking molecular modeling. SEM, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and DLS were used to identify the shape and estimate the particle size of the embedded nanoparticles. © 2022 ECS - The Electrochemical Society.

Sertraline hydrochloride (SER) is widely used to treat depression, anxiety, and other disorders, but its presence in global water bodies underscores the need for innovative water treatment solutions. This study introduces a novel adsorbent developed through a sustainable approach, where natural zeolites were functionalized with copper oxide nanoparticles (NZ_NPCuO) to enhance SER removal from contaminated water. Copper oxide nanoparticles were synthesized via a green method using Barbatimão (Stryphnodendron polyphyllum Mart.) stem bark extract. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), leaching tests, and zeta potential measurements validated the successful formation and chemical stability of the nanoparticles. SER adsorption tests revealed a maximum capacity (q_max) of 25.19 mg/g at 298 K, achieving equilibrium within 960 min. The Elovich and Langmuir models were determined to best describe the kinetic and isothermal data, respectively. Thermodynamic analyses indicated that the adsorption process is exothermic, spontaneous, and reversible. Potential adsorption mechanisms included hydrogen bonding, π-interactions, and electrostatic attraction. We also evaluated the antibacterial properties of NZ_NPCuO using the disk diffusion method against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, resulting in inhibition zones of 26 mm, 7.5 mm, and 14 mm, respectively. Thus, the proposed composite shows great potential for SER removal from wastewater and offers a promising alternative for developing effective antimicrobial agents for different proposals, particularly for microbiological water treatment. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This article aims to analyze contributions and applications of Queuing Theory (QT) in solving health service management problems. A literature bibliometric review was carried out to present a chronological classification of health care systems examined with the aid of queuing models with the purpose of describing the main trends in QT application to assist decision makers in health services. Methodology: A bibliometric review was carried out to investigate the area of health supported by queuing models. Articles describing models of problems were sought and their topics or keywords related to QT and health care or health problems of the population. Results: 314 articles addressing the applications of QT in Health Care Management (HCM) from 2014 and 2020 were analyzed. Conclusion: It was found that QT contributes to improve health services and provides managers with resources to achieve such improvement. It was also evidenced that it is widely applied in emergency services.

Hydrazones are rigid conjugated systems and the Nitrogen-Hydrogen unit participates in hydrogen bonding. Exhibit a wide spectrum of biological properties such an antimicrobial, anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to evaluate the structural, spectroscopic, electronic and pharmacokinetic properties of the compound hydrazone were investigated by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) computational calculations. As well as evaluate as the potential of the hydrazone (E)-4-((2-(phthalazin-1-yl)hydrazineylidene)methyl)benzene-1,3-diol (from now on named S8) to reverse the resistance of the NorA and MepA efflux pumps, in S. aureus strains. Good agreement was observed between the data calculated using DFT calculations and the experimental data from the infrared and Raman spectra. The compound was able to synergistically modulate the action of the Norfloxacin antibiotic against the S. aureus 1199B strain carrying the NorA efflux pump. But when associated with ethidium bromide, it did not act against the NorA efflux pump, which suggests that it does not act directly on the efflux mechanism of bacteria. © 2024, The Authors. This review aims to identify in vivo studies investigating the potential of plant substances and their natural molecules in managing inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Specifically,the objective is to examine the impact of these substances on interleukins and other key inflammatory signaling *** articles published up to December 2022 were identified through a search of the PubMed,Scopus,Web of science,and Embase *** search used keywords including“inflammatory bowel disease”,“medicinal plants”,“natural molecules”,“anti-inflammatory”,and“ulcerative colitis”,and identified 1,878 potentially relevant articles,of which 89 were included in this review after completion of the selection *** study provides preclinical data on natural products(NPs)that can potentially treat IBD,including ulcerative *** main actions of these NPs relate to their effects on nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κβ),the Janus kinase(JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription(STAT)signaling pathway,the regulation of T helper 17/regulatory T cells balance,and oxidative *** ability of these NPs to inhibit intestinal inflammation appears to be dependent on lowering levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),interleukin(IL)-1β,and IL-17,via the Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK)1,NF-κβ-p65,and STAT3 *** addition,NPs were shown to reduce oxidative stress and the severity of ulcerative colitis,as well as increase the activity of antioxidant *** actions suggest that NPs represent a promising treatment for IBD,and potentially have greater efficacy and safety than current treatments.
