Stability and activity of nickel catalysts supported on diatomite for dry reforming of methane: Role of cerium and boron promoters

This study evaluates the activity and stability of nickel-based catalysts supported on diatomite and promoted with 1 or 2 wt% of cerium or boron for the dry reforming of methane (DRM). Diatomite, a naturally abundant and low-cost support, requires no complex synthesis procedures and remains relatively underexplored in DRM applications. Given the economic viability of using this material, the incorporation of promoters such as cerium and boron can enhance its catalytic properties, including resistance to coke formation, thermal stability, and activity at both low and high temperatures, thereby increasing its potential for industrial application. The support composition was analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and its morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The catalysts were characterized by SEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Raman spectroscopy. The catalytic performance results indicated that cerium addition enhanced CO2 and CH4 conversion, with 2 wt% Ce-promoted catalyst stands out due to its significantly higher conversion rates and lower coke formation, as observed in TGA. The 2 wt% boron-promoted catalyst exhibited greater stability, with significant resistance to coke formation, despite showing lower CH4 conversion. SEM analysis revealed the presence of carbon filaments, particularly in the catalysts without boron, whereas boron-promoted catalysts showed reduced filamentous carbon formation. The activation energies derived from the Arrhenius plot further corroborate these findings, demonstrating that boron-promoted catalysts exhibited satisfactory performance at high temperatures (>800 °C), where the reaction is thermodynamically controlled. Fault zones are known to influence the petrophysical properties of the rocks that accommodate deformation. However, the effect of a fault zone containing deformation bands and hydrothermal silicification on fluid flow remains underexplored. This study investigates the impact of the coexistence of deformation bands and hydrothermal silicification on the fluid flow based on a outcrop composed of conglomeratic sandstone within the damage zone of the Portalegre Fault in the Rio do Peixe Basin, an analog of siliciclastic reservoir in the northeastern of Brazil. Previous studies divided this outcrop into three zones according to the presence and degree of silicification: Zone I (non-silicified), Zone II (moderately silicified), and Zone III (intensively silicified). Porosity and permeability models were constructed for each zone, and numerical fluid flow simulations were conducted. Our results showed significant alteration of the permoporous properties, leading to significant fluid flow anisotropy. Zone I exhibited the highest oil recovery, with an average recovery factor of 34 %. Flow analysis revealed that silicification controlled the flow direction, and deformation bands were overridden by silicification. The silicification process led to a significant increase in anisotropy, which was crucial for enhancing sweep efficiency. This alteration elevated the tortuosity of fluid flow, thereby improving the lateral sweep efficiency within the study area. This process reduced hydrodynamic properties, causing strong permeability anisotropy, primarily attributed to mineral dissolution and the formation of preferential flow paths. The results from this research offer new insights into fluid flow prediction and production optimization for reservoirs with similar fault-related siliciclastic characteristics. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In this work, zinc aluminate spinel was prepared by two methods of directly synthesis (without calcination): microwave assisted combustion and hydrothermal method. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2-adsorption/ desorption isotherms. The XRD patterns confirmed the formation of cubic ZnAl2O4 spinel structure with no secondary phases for both synthesis routes, whereas the hydrothermal method yielded powders with crystallite size 3 times smaller (6.9 nm), as compared to the powders produced by microwave assisted combustion method (25.6 nm). The micrographs revealed agglomerated powders with plate-like morphologies for both routes. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET) revealed higher surface area (183 m2.g-1) and greater pore volume (0.173 cm3.g-1) for ZnAl2O4 powders prepared by the hydrothermal method. © 2017 Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos. The increasing population at Teluk Pemedas and Sanipah coastal areas of Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province, has led to coastal degradation. The problem was mainly caused by conversion of mangrove into aquaculture, agriculture, plantation industrial, and residential areas. This research was a study case, used descriptive analysis to describe the local fishermen activity using belat traditional device to catch fish. The results revealed that there were many fishermen still did not know the benefits of mangrove for economy growth, ecological, ecotourism etc. This condition affects to the decline of the mangrove function. Fisherman who used belat often move from one location to another location in order to find places that have many catches. The belat which are placed in good environment mangrove areas produces lots of catches that greatly benefit the fisherman, therefore mangrove ecosystem must be well preserved for the sustainability of fishermen's efforts to earn a living. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

This case report investigates the preventive effect of Tinospora cordifolia extract on biocorrosion induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa on mild steel API 5L in the simulated seawater medium. Electrochemical techniques, spectroscopic techniques, and surface analysis were employed to investigate biocide performance and corrosion behavior. P. aeruginosa has been shown to enhance iron dissolution in seawater medium. These findings point to the role of P. aeruginosa bacteria in forming differential oxygen, which causes corrosion. Morphology results from atomic Fourier microscopy (AFM) highlight the presence of P. aeruginosa in biotic environments, where the surface is rougher than in abiotic conditions. On the other hand, adding T. cordifolia to the biotic medium resulted in a smoother and more homogeneous surface without any significant deterioration. Electrochemical findings reveal that adding 300 mg L⁻¹ of T. cordifolia extract prevents the microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of steel API 5L, with an optimum effectiveness value of 74.50 % after 21 days of incubation. This protective effect is caused by forming a more compact iron oxide surface layer and the adsorption of phenolic active compounds such as Moupinamide and others on the surface of mild steel API 5L, as detected by liquid chromatography-mass/spectrometry-mass spectrometry (LCMS-MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) techniques. © 2024 The Authors

In this study, sugarcane bagasse ash was used to evaluate the physical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of eco-friendly alkali-activated mixtures with blast furnace slag. Net sodium silicate and solid metasilicate were used as activators to produce conventional and one-part alkali-activated mixtures, respectively. Two types of sugarcane bagasse ash were analyzed: raw (as-received) and calcined. The low number of proposed processes reduces the economic aggregate cost of recycled ash. Further, the blast furnace slag replacement ratios of raw and calcined sugarcane bagasse ash were 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70%. Mortars were prepared for the compressive and flexural strength tests, water absorption, and dry density. Alternatively, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to assess the chemical, mineralogical, and microstructural properties of the prepared pastes. In addition, the fresh test was performed using the flow table test, wherein the spread diameter decreased as the SBA content increased, primarily on the raw ash owing to its high organic material content. Moreover, compressive strength results showed that the compressive strength increased after 3 days for mixtures with 10% and 30% SBA. However, at 28 days, there was a decrease with an increase in the SBA content. Similar behavior was observed in the flexural strength and water absorption tests. Tests on pastes verified the probable presence of alternative phases besides C-(A)-S-H, such as pectolite, brucite, hydrotalcite, and zeolites. In addition, through the combination of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy techniques, the presence of preserved cellular structure was observed in the alkali-activated matrix, and Ca/Si and Si/Al ratios were calculated.
