In the digital age, managing urban heritage sites presents unique challenges that necessitate the integration of smart technologies. This review assesses the integration and impact of smart city initiatives on sustainable environmental management in urban heritage sites. Through a comprehensive literature review of 84 papers from scienceDirect and Scopus, this study categorizes the findings into three themes: Smart City Initiative Analysis, Heritage Site Considerations, and Smart Technology Integration Models. The review highlights the significant contributions of smart technologies, such as digital analysis, 3D documentation, and Information and communication technology, in enhancing sustainability and preserving cultural values. Case studies from Amsterdam, Barcelona, Seville, and Uzbek illustrate these initiatives' practical applications and outcomes. The paper underscores the need for robust policies, public awareness, and multidisciplinary collaboration to maximize the benefits of smart city initiatives. Finally, the study identifies gaps in current research and suggests further research directions for integrating smart technologies into urban heritage site management. © 2024 IEEE.

Preliminary studies have highlighted the potential of Indonesia's geographical, suprastructural, and infrastructural conditions to develop a strong shipbuilding industry, which is crucial for the success of the world maritime axis program and sea toll. However, despite high expectations, the industry faces challenges that threaten business sustainability, leading to bankruptcies. To assess business sustainability, it is essential to establish criteria and sub-criteria, which previous studies have overlooked, focusing only on technical and economic factors. Therefore, this research generally aims to develop and analyze environmentally friendly sustainable criteria in the multi-oriented shipyard industry so that it develops in accordance with the vision, mission, goals and strategies. The criteria development process involves identifying and reviewing relevant articles, classifying and refining the criteria, conducting expert validity testing, Pearson Product Moment validity testing, and reliability testing using the Alpha (Cronbach) method. The expert validity testing indicates that ‘people' received the highest average score of 4.67 among the criteria, and ‘infrastructure' scored the highest in the sub-criteria, with a score of 4.75. The validity testing with the Pearson Product Moment method demonstrates that the criteria and sub-criteria are valid and the reliability of 32 sub-criteria indicating their influence on promoting multi-oriented and environmentally sustainable shipbuilding industries. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Plastic-based goods are commonly used in daily life, but their waste poses significant environmental challenges due to its durability. This study investigates the use of recycled plastic as an artificial coarse aggregate in asphalt mixtures, specifically assessing the effects of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) on Hot Rolled Sheet Wearing Course (HRS-WC) mixtures. The objectives are to evaluate the physical properties of the artificial coarse aggregates, identify the optimal asphalt content and Marshall characteristics, and determine the maximum feasible substitution level for these aggregates. A test specimen (briquette) was produced for the Marshall test to assess the mixture properties. Our findings indicate that the maximum allowable substitution of HDPE plastic in HRS-WC mixtures is 42%. With an optimal asphalt content of 7.30%, HDPE substitution levels of 30%, 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50% yielded the highest stability at 45% (1176.696 kg), the highest VMA at 30% (21.250%), and the highest VIM within specifications at 30% (4.998%). The highest VFB value was observed at 45% (88.767%), while the highest Marshall Quotient was at 30% (364.527 kg/mm). The study recommends a maximum HDPE plastic waste substitution level of 40%, highlighting the potential for using HDPE plastic waste in asphalt mixtures to promote more sustainable construction practices. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. Biosorption of chromium by live and dead cells of Bacillus nitratireducens isolated from textile effluent

Bacillus nitratireducens was isolated from textile effluent and showed high tolerance to chromium (Cr), reaching up to a 1000 mg/L MIC value. This research was aimed at utilizing biosorbents from live and dead cells of B. nitratireducens to remove Cr from an aqueous solution. A batch biosorption test was performed, and mechanisms analysis was approached by an adsorption-desorption test, SEM-EDS, and FTIR analysis. Cr removal by dead cells in 25, 50, and 100 mg/L of Cr were 58.99 ± 0.7%, 69.8 ± 0.2%, and 82.87 ± 0.11%, respectively, while that by live cells was 73.08 ± 1.9%, 80.27 ± 6.33%, and 86.17 ± 1.93%, respectively. Live cells showed significantly higher Cr removal and adsorption capacities as compared to dead cells. In all concentrations, absorption contributed more than adsorption to the Cr removal by both live and dead cells. Absorption of Cr was subjected to occur due to passive mechanisms in dead cells while involving some active mechanisms in live cells. SEM-EDS confirmed the detection of Cr on the cell surface, while FTIR revealed the shifting of some peaks after the biosorption test, suggesting interactions between Cr and functional groups. Further TEM analysis is suggested to be conducted as a future approach to reveal the inner structure of cells and confirm the involvement of absorption mechanisms. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Alue Naga Beach and Ulee Lheue Beach are beaches located in Banda Aceh City, Aceh Province, these two beaches have a fairly large role in the fields of fisheries, transportation, and tourism. During the last few years, the population growth rate of Banda Aceh City has increased by 2% per year, this causes the volume of waste generated to be even greater, unfortunately, the municipal waste management office cannot manage it fully. Most of the untreated waste enters water bodies and has the potential to pollute the marine and coastal environment. So it is necessary to do research to provide an overview of the level of marine debris pollution on the two beaches. This study uses the transect method, the waste obtained is grouped according to size and type. The results showed that marine debris on Ulee Lheue beach was found to be more numerous and varied than marine debris on Alue Naga beach. Overall, macro waste with a size range of 2.5−1 m was the most commonly found and plastic was the waste with the highest yield with a density value of 65.8 g/m2, an abundance of 6.56 items/m2, and a percentage of 75%. © 2022

In order to reduce Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottle plastic waste, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) provided reverse osmosis drinking water in some buildings. Water monitoring is needed to keep the water quality. Therefore, a water monitoring system based on Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, and water flow was proposed. Since the UB buildings have good internet connection (WiFi), Internet of Things (IoT) was employed to the system to support real time monitoring. So, data of TDS, pH, and water flow can be periodically sent to cloud and displayed to a specific website. The system worked very well and the data can be summarized and used by operator as indicators of performance of the reverse osmosis machine. When water quality and performance decrease, operator must check filters membrane or water pump for further maintenance to support long life use. Although the sensors have been calibrated properly, some measurement errors occur. The measurement error percentages of TDS and pH are 0.62% and 0.94%, respectively. © 2022 IEEE.

The processing of markets' organic wastes in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta, is still done conventionally, that most of it, is directly composted at the Landfill or sometimes even directly dumped without going through the composting process. This research was conducted to maximize the processing of the organic waste that was generated by the local market, using continuous flow bin and vermicomposting to make it more economically beneficial to the community and to test the chemical parameters like Carbon / Nitrogen, Phosphor, and Potassium level from the vermicast, which is the after-product of vermicompost process. The research process goes through several stages: the acclimatization stage, the feeding stage or the vermicompost process, and the testing stage. Carbon/Nitrogen ratios, Phosphor, and Potassium values in the final results of the three reactors in the composting process meet the composting criteria according to SNI 19-7030-2004. The Carbon/Nitrogen measured in the three reactors were 10.2%, 16.6%, and 11.54%, respectively. The phosphorus levels (P) available in the three reactors were 0.32%, 0.35%, and 0.33%. Potassium (K) levels available in the three reactors were 0.26%, 0.58%, and 0.67%. The K values in reactors 2 and 3 meet the compost criteria or standards from SNI 19-7030-2004 because it is more than 0.20%, while for reactor 1 it is still below the criteria standard. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
