Fabrication of organo-silica thin film for water desalination from dual silicate precursor (tetraethylorthosilicate & methyltriethoxysilane)

A modification of silica structure is urgently needed to improve silica-based matrices applied for water desalination. It is due to the hydrophilic properties owned by pure silica structures, and it is also caused by the silica pore was collapse during ions water exposed on membrane surfaces. According to that, this study is aimed to fabricate and to observe the innovation of silica membranes modified matrices by mixing the main precursor of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) as sources of silicate as well as carbon applied for water desalination. The mixtures of MTES:TEOS (10:90) was mixed with acid-base catalysts using sol gel method. This process and reaction were held for 3 h nonstop. The modified organo-silica sols were dried by oven for 24 h and grinded into powder that called xerogel. Then it was calcined using furnace for 1 h at 350 and 450 °C using RTP (rapid thermal processing) method which under variation of condition (vacuum and air/atmosphere). Functionalization of modified organo-silica membranes were investigated using FTIR spectra and Fityk software. The results show the modified organo-silica derived from MTES (as a carbon source) exhibited the functionalization of siloxane (Si-O-Si), silanol (Si-OH), and silica-carbon (Si-C) functional groups. The optimum organo-silica MTES:TEOS mixture was obtained from sample calcined at 450 °C under vacuum calcination. The presence of carbon bonds causes the pores formed tend to be small but strong so it is suitable for application in the desalination process.

Inorganic material applied for membrane technology such as silica is well employed for water desalination nowadays. Silica membrane is favorable to use to offer high selectivity and robust materials. However, it also has a debility due to unstable matrices when contact to water. Nypa fruticans leaf was fundamentally containing carbon which is potential as templating agent to enhanced the hydro-stability. The objective of this work is to investigate performance of nypa-silica membrane for desalination of seawater. Nypa-silica membrane prepared by mixing silica sol and carbon from nypa (0.1, 0.5 and 2.5 %) for 90 min at cold temperature. Then membrane support was immersed into nypa-silica sol by dipcoater and calcined at 350 and 450°C under inert atmosphere condition via rapid thermal processing (RTP) technique. Silica-nypa membranes were tested by seawater desalination (3.5 wt% NaCl) by pervaporation. Carbon from nypa gave a good impact to silica base membrane performance depends on template loading. Increasing concentration of nypa may reduce water flux of permeate. The result of membrane in this work rather low water flux. However, all of membranes show great salt rejection >99.9%. Interestingly, the permeate salt concentration of all silica-nypa membranes performed less than 600 ppm of limited total dissolved salt on drinking water according to standards given by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The problem of environmental pollution especially urban water pollution becomes major issue in Indonesia. The cause of water pollution is not only from industrial factory waste disposal but also other causes which become pollution factor. One cause of water pollution is the existence of agricultural activities with the use of the amount of pesticides that exceed the threshold. As regulated in Government Regulation No. 82/2001 on Water Quality Management and Water Pollution Control, it is necessary to manage water quality and control water pollution wisely by taking into account the interests of current and future generations as well as the ecological balance. To overcome the problem of water pollution due to agricultural activities, it is necessary to conduct research on phytoremediation technique by utilizing eceng gondok plant. It is excepted that using this phytoremediation technique can reduce the problem of water pollution due to the use of pesticides on agricultural activities. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

Urban in Indonesia, is no longer limited as a center of community settlement. Now the city also functions as a center of government, a central hierarchy, and a center of economic growth. As a logical consequence of the role of cities as a center of growth and economy, urban contributions to national economic growth are increasing. To overcome this problem, a portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system was designed. With the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the dryer will be easily moved and flexible to use. The advantage of portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system is the drying process could be done continuously with a little human power. Therefore, this portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system is designed to use renewable energy sources. To examine the portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system, the foodstuff was used for a testing of ingredients. The portable conveyor of solar-energized drying system testing show that the amount of water content in the foodstuff reduced, the drying rate accelerate. In addition, the amount of heat energy needed for the drying process also reduced. Hence process of drying foodstuff more efficienct. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The emergence of waste management technology innovation is able to inhibit the accumulation of waste in temporary collection sites and landfill. Innovations that have been developed in developed countries and summarized in the concept of "Smart Waste Management" are still not able to be applied to cities in developing countries, such as Indonesia. This is because the technologies that already exist in Indonesia are still far behind by developed countries in the world. In addition to sophisticated technology, the understanding and behaviour of the community has also been more advanced in the field of waste management, which starts from the process of sorting waste in each household to the recycling process of waste to minimize the amount of waste entering the landfill. This study took place in the city of Semarang, Central-Java where the area is an urban area with waste problems that must be addressed immediately. The lack of technology, especially the city-scale recycling technology makes land in the landfill increasingly unable to accommodate the production of waste that enters every day. Therefore, the aim of this study is to define the high level of application of the Smart Waste Recycling concept that has been carried out in Semarang City by utilizing the technology currently available. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. The processing of markets' organic wastes in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta, is still done conventionally, that most of it, is directly composted at the Landfill or sometimes even directly dumped without going through the composting process. This research was conducted to maximize the processing of the organic waste that was generated by the local market, using continuous flow bin and vermicomposting to make it more economically beneficial to the community and to test the chemical parameters like Carbon / Nitrogen, Phosphor, and Potassium level from the vermicast, which is the after-product of vermicompost process. The research process goes through several stages: the acclimatization stage, the feeding stage or the vermicompost process, and the testing stage. Carbon/Nitrogen ratios, Phosphor, and Potassium values in the final results of the three reactors in the composting process meet the composting criteria according to SNI 19-7030-2004. The Carbon/Nitrogen measured in the three reactors were 10.2%, 16.6%, and 11.54%, respectively. The phosphorus levels (P) available in the three reactors were 0.32%, 0.35%, and 0.33%. Potassium (K) levels available in the three reactors were 0.26%, 0.58%, and 0.67%. The K values in reactors 2 and 3 meet the compost criteria or standards from SNI 19-7030-2004 because it is more than 0.20%, while for reactor 1 it is still below the criteria standard.

The heading Ecological footprint is one of the methods developed to respond sustainable development issue expected to measure the availability and usage of natural resources affecting the ecology of environment. The purpose of this study is to count the value of ecological footprint at Farming Production Centre Merauke through the supply and demand approach based on GFN (Global Footprint Network) and count the capacity of environment. The method used was Global Footprint Network, and counting capacity method. The results of ecological footprint counting was 29.9536 gha/inhabitant and the value of bio-capacity (supply) was gha/inhabitant, so the ecology (environmental support) value was 1,1936gha/inhabitant. The results show that the Farming Production Centre is categorized into ecological surplus and the capacity is 36,8964inhabitants/ha. The value shows that the environment and ecosystem condition in the development area of Farming Production Centre in Merauke, Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate, is able to accommodate the needs and support the people living in the area (ecological debt). © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2019.

This research discusses about safety and health occupational control in Bangka Ocean KIP Timah 16 Units using some risk management methods. The methods are Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA). Purpose of the research is to explain safety and health occupational in KIP Timah 16 Unit it is for get the improvement of productivity work, production, welfare and comfortability workers and achievement of zero accident. The type of the research is descriptive. There are two data had collected. They are primary and secondary data. Primary data get from interview with the employees and secondary data get from K3 documents in the enter company of PT. Timah UPLB and KIP 16. Based on result of research can get some conclusions. Pretreatment during biogas production aims to assist in degradation of lignin contained in the rice husk. In this study, pretreatment which is used are acid and biological pretreatment. Acid pretreatment was performed using acetic acid and nitric acid with a variety levels of 3% and 5%. While biological pretreatment as a control variable. Acid pretreatment was conducted by soaking the rice straw for 24 hours with acid variation. The study was conducted using Solid State Anaerobic Digestion (SS-AD) with 21% TS. Biogas production was measured using water displacement method every two days for 60 days at room temperature conditions. The results showed that acid pretreatment gave an effect on the production of biogas yield. The yield of the biogas produced by pretreatment of acetic acid of 5% and 3% was 43.28 and 45.86 ml/***. While the results without pretreatment biogas yield was 29.51 ml/***. The results yield biogas produced by pretreatment using nitric acid of 5% and 3% was 12.14 ml/*** and 21.85 ml/***. Results biogas yield with acetic acid pretreatment was better than the biogas yield results with nitric acid pretreatment. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.
