The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical profile of extracts (aqueous and ethanol) and the essential oil of Myrocarpus frondosus Allem?o, the sensitivity of strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium and Listéria monocytogenes, front the extracts and essential oil, by means of the microdilution method in broth, the antioxidant activity by the ABTS method, and the content of phenolic compounds present in the extracts and oil. For the preparation of extracts from plant leaves used with ethanol and water, then separated, the chemical identification of compounds was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (CLAE-DAD) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrum (CG/MS). With the chemical analysis of the extracts obtained the presence of the major compound rutin, and oil major compound was found germacrene B. In the microdilution method in broth, oil and extracts showed inhibition against all the bacteria tested in the concentrations 1 mg/ml to 0.25 mg/ml, except for Staphylococcus aureus at a concentration of 0.25 mg/ml of the essential oil and trans-caryophyllene. The results of Minimum Bactericidal Concentration showed that the essential oil had bactericidal activity at a concentration of 1mg/ml for all bacteria tested and trans-caryophyllene at the same concentration only for Listeria monocytogenes. In relation to the essential oil, antioxidant activity showed higher radical reduction capacity of 40.92% and the content of phenolic compounds ethanol extract showed more 12.72%. The in vitro results support the conclusion that the essential oil is very promising both in antimicrobial action as antioxidant activity and the leaf extracts on antioxidant activity.

Physico-stimulant like audible sound is one of the new promising methods for enhancing microalgae growth rate. Here, microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis was cultivated with the addition of audible sound with titles “Blues for Elle” and “Far and Wide.” The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of audible sound to the growth and productivity of microalgae. The experiment has been conducted by exposing the audible sound for 8 h in 22 days to microalgae cultivation. The result showed that microalgae H. pluvialis treated by the music “Blues for Elle” shows the highest growth rate (0.03 per day), and 58% higher than the one without audible sound. The average number of cells in stationary phase is 0.76 × 10⁴ cells/mL culture and the productivity is 3.467 × 10² cells/mL/day. The pH of microalgae medium slightly decreases because of proton production during photosynthesis process. The kinetic rate constant (k_app) is 0.078 per day, reaction half-life (t_1/2) is 8.89 days, and catalytic surface (K_surf) is 1.66 × 10⁻⁵/day/cm². In conclusion, this audible sound is very useful to stimulate microalgae growth rate, especially H. pluvialis. © 2017 Institut Pertanian Bogor

Improvement of lipid yield from microalgae Spirulina platensis using ultrasound assisted osmotic shock extraction method

Microalgae Spirulina sp. has been identified as potential source of natural food supplement and food colorant. The high water content of microalgae (70-90%) causes an obstacle in biomass dehydration which requires large amounts of energy, eventually damaging the lipid in the microalgae. Therefore, the lipid must be extracted by using a suitable method which complies to wet biomass conditions. One of the methods is applying osmotic shock. This study was aimed to investigate the influence of osmotic agent (NaCl) concentration (10-30%) and extraction time (20-50 min) on yield of lipid and also to determine the optimal conditions in the extraction process through response surface methodology. The extraction was conducted at a temperature of 40°C under ultrasound frequency of 40 kHz. The result showed that the optimum yield lipid obtained was 6.39% in 16.98% NaCl concentration for 36 minutes 10 seconds.

Lower energy consumption compared to reverse osmosis (RO) and higher rejection compared to ultrafiltration make nanofiltration (NF) membrane get more and more attention for wastewater treatment. NF has become a promising technology not only for treating wastewater but also for reusing water from wastewater. This paper presents various application of NF for wastewater treatments. The factors affecting the performance of NF membranes including operating conditions, feed characteristics and membrane characteristics were discussed. In addition, fouling as a severe problem during NF application is also presented. Further, future prospects and challenges of NF for wastewater treatments are explained.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The research study is located in Semarang with 10 samples of ground water gathered from dug wells. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis of ground water data is used to find water quality. The findings show lead concentration, cadmium concentration, and TDS in the water have surpassed the standard by the rules of Indonesian Health Ministry Year 2010. Those surpassing concentrations make water not suitable to consume because it will have impact on health, such as: inducting injuries through oxidative stress, epigenetic changes in DNA expression, central nerve, hematopoietic, incurable liver and kidney failures. Cluster analysis shows 7 locations are included into first cluster meanwhile three other locations are included into second, third, and fourth. From factorial analysis of four main factors, such as manganese, nitrate, zinc, and cadmium. Those factors are assumed to pollute because anthropogenic factors, such as: industrial, domestic, and agriculture waste causing lowering water quality.

Global warming has become an important issue over the last few decades. One of the causes is the presence of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) which is emitted by human activities. Oil and gas production (drilling, work over, and refinery) for energy consume will be followed by the associated gas. The associated gas will be flared due to safety and non-economic reasons. The objectives of this study are reviewing the environmental impact and utilize technologies from flaring gas. The impact of flaring gas can lead to a decrease in human health, increased GHG, changing the plant metabolism, and decrease the production of agricultural crops. Due to these, there are some technologies to reduce flaring such as: reinjection (EOR activities), PNG, LPG, LNG, CNG, NGH, GTE, and GTL. The flare gas recovery is expected to obtain the lower value of GHG in the air and as one of the clean development mechanism (CDM) practices with a rethink, reuse, reduce, recovery, and recycle principle.

Flood disaster is one of the problems that could threaten the sustainability of Jakarta. The intensity of major floods continues to increase as a result of high rainfall and land conversion as well as poor urban drainage system. Therefore, the city requires an increased capacity to face flood disaster. The enhancement of the city capacity needs to be well designed to achieve a state of city that is resistant to disaster or what is known as a Resilient City. The purpose of this research is to develop an adaptation model of flood disaster prone city resilience to actualize the sustainability of the city of Jakarta. Based on the position analysis results using Structural Equations Model (SEM), 4 (four) factors affecting the adaptation model of resilience disaster prone city of Jakarta were found, which are spatial arrangement, technology innovation, disaster mitigation, and disaster adaptation. To form a resilient city, resilient ways are required. The effective resilient ways to be implemented in the city of Jakarta are the implementation of orderly spatial management, the enhancement of the adaptive capacity of society and a dynamic and planned urban systems to actualize a resilient and sustainable.
