Inadequate energy management leads to more emission exposure, which causes climate change, severe environmental contamination, and human health risks. Therefore, the World Health Organisation (WHO) monitors universal efforts to prevent emissions and encourages governments to develop industries to transform the green economy. During the current study, the energy and cost variation was observed through three years (2020, 2021, and 2022) at a surface water plant in southern Egypt. Consistent with applying operation strategies that met convenient standard operating procedures (SOPs) during 2021 and 2022. Energy consumption was reduced by 13% to 17%, and the cost decreased by 5% to 12% for 2021 and 2022, respectively. These energy and financial savings should be considered as an influence of the water safety plans (WSPs). Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) was utilised to identify the mechanism of energy consumption and its impact on the cost during the study period. The finding proves that the energy and cost rise is related to increased water demand during the summer months, periodic/emergency maintenance, and comprehensive cleaning activities. WSPs were applied to control biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and oil and grease (O & G) that show increasing values than Egyptian law. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The Muara Beting coastal area on the north coast of Java, Indonesia, faces coastal erosion processes that gradually affect the decrease of mangrove land. That process causes the land to be extremely eroded and become closer to the Citarum River. The seawater intrusion occurs within the decreasing land mangroves. If erosion persists, the increased seawater intrusion might result in the convergence of the pond area with the Citarum River. This study aims to simulate and analyze how the "Building with Nature" building can be applied as a mitigation strategy through Delft3D simulations. Data was collected through field surveys, satellite image analysis, and library observations to evaluate the impact of the proposed solutions. The simulations used bathymetry, sediment characteristics, wind, tide, and river discharge measurements for input data. Apart from simulating natural conditions, several scenarios were also arranged based on the placement of permeable structures combined with the floodway. The best scenario was selected from where cumulative sedimentation and erosion and the cross-sectional depth show best. This study's findings will be intended to assist Muara Beting’s coastal community in reconstructing pond land that has been harmed by coastal erosion, allowing the locals to carry on with their pond-related livelihoods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Drought is a climatic phenomenon that has increased in severity over time. This study analyzed drought spread in the Alto Patía basin (13,047 km2) in South America, applying the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Vegetation Health Index (VHI), and Streamflow Drought Index (SDI) to assess meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought, respectively. Synchronous and asynchronous correlations were estimated, and Wavelet analysis was conducted to verify relationships among drought types. Results show that the lag between drought types varies based on the intensity, temporal continuity, and spatial extent of meteorological drought. A lag of zero months (1–2 months) was observed between meteorological and hydrological drought when moderate (severe) meteorological drought partially (fully) covers the basin. Agricultural drought, however, does not always correspond to meteorological drought during isolated rainfall events. As the first study in Colombia to systematically connect these drought types, this research addresses a gap in understanding how drought impacts progress across systems in regions with complex rainfall patterns. These findings offer critical insights into the interdependencies among drought types, supporting enhanced drought monitoring and early warning systems in similar climatic regions. By identifying specific lags between meteorological and hydrological droughts, this study provides practical guidance for land management, water conservation, and crop planning, offering a foundation for future research on drought resilience strategies.

This study investigates the occurrence and sources of fecal contamination along the Texas Gulf Coast, focusing on two barrier islands: Sargent Beach and Matagorda Peninsula. Surface water samples from six sites were collected over 19 months and analyzed for fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and microbial source tracking (MST) markers, including human (HF183), canine (BacCan), avian (GFD), and enterococci (Entero1) markers. Culturable enterococci were detected in all samples, often exceeding safety thresholds, indicating widespread fecal contamination. The cement industry in Indonesia, heavily relies on coal, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Simultaneously, Java Island generates over 23 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually, with limited utilization for energy recovery. This study evaluates the feasibility of substituting coal with refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from MSW in Java's cement industry, focusing on environmental, economic, and technical aspects. Scenario analyses indicate that substituting 10%, 20%, and 30% of thermal energy with RDF could divert up to 8.7 million tons of MSW from landfills annually, reducing GHG emissions by up to 2.77 million Gg CO₂-eq. These reductions align with Indonesia's environmental policies and global climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. The economic assessment demonstrates the viability of RDF, with potential annual cost savings of up to $421 million. Beyond addressing coal dependency, RDF adoption supports circular economy practices, reduces landfill reliance, and mitigates environmental pollution. However, challenges such as infrastructure gaps and regulatory barriers require attention. This study provides actionable insights to guide policy formulation, foster industry investment, and facilitate the implementation of RDF-based energy solutions. By bridging waste management and sustainable energy practices, the findings contribute to Indonesia's renewable energy goals, emphasizing the practical applications of RDF for a more sustainable future in industrial operations. © 2025 The Authors

A cross-flow microfilter capable of operating at elevated temperatures and pressures was evaluated for its ability to remove inorganic salts from supercritical water (SCW). The separation characteristics of-molten sodium nitrate were investigated. The overall performance of the cross-flow microfilter and the effects of process variables on the separation efficiency were evaluated. Separation efficiencies up to 85% were observed. An empirical model was developed for the prediction of the filtrate salt concentration and the fluidized cake resistance as a function of the salt solubility and salt flux to the filter. Physical principles governing the separation process were defined.

GENERALIZED KINETIC-MODEL FOR WET OXIDATION OF ORGANIC-COMPOUNDS

A generalized kinetic model for wet oxidation (WO) of organic compounds was developed based on a simplified reaction scheme considering acetic acid as the rate-limiting intermediate. The selectivity of product vs. intermediate formations was quantified by the ratio of the two reaction rate constants. This point selectivity alpha may be used to characterize the "strength" of the feed stream to be treated. This global model was validated using WO kinetic data reported for temperatures ranging from 150-degrees-C to 550-degrees-C and pressures varying from 20 bar to 440 bar. Organic conversions predicted by this model, as compared to other models, more accurately reflect the actual performance of WO processes. The model has practical validity for a variety of organic compounds, wastewaters and sludges in both subcritical and supercritical water oxidation processes.

SUPERCRITICAL water OXIDATION OF ACETIC-ACID BY POTASSIUM-PERMANGANATE

Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) of acetic acid by potassium permanganate (KMnO4) was studied. The experiments were performed in a batch reactor at temperatures and pressures, respectively, ranging from 400-degrees-C to 460-degrees-C and from 275 bar to 350 bar. For comparison purposes, other oxidants, such as oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, Cu-H2O2, Fe-H2O2 and MnSO4-H2O2, were studied. Subcritical tests with potassium permanganate were also conducted at temperatures of 250-degrees-C, 300-degrees-C and 350-degrees-C. The order of acetic acid destruction effectiveness was found to be KMnO4 > Cu-H2O2 > Fe-H2O2 > MnSO4-H2O2 > H2O2 > O2 at a temperature of 400-degrees-C, density of 0.3 g/ml and reaction time of less than 10 min. The acetic acid destruction efficiency by potassium permanganate was 77% at a temperature of 400-degrees-C, density of 0.3 g/ml and a reaction time of 2.5 min. Under similar conditions, only 40% of acetic acid was destroyed at 250-degrees-C. Potassium permanganate was demonstrated to be an effective oxidant for SCWO of acetic acid.

High frequency monitoring for impact assessment of temperature, oxygen and radiation in floating photovoltaic system

Floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems are designed for free water surface installations to provide a feasible solution for places with no availability of land areas and to avoid land-use conflicts caused by conventional solar energy farms. However, lakes and reservoirs are essential for ecosystem services like water supply and biodiversity support. In this regard, there was a lack of long-term and high-frequency monitoring data of important parameters influenced by FPV installation such as photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and dissolved oxygen (DO). Temperature, despite being more reported, there is no consensus on increase or decrease values below the FPV. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive field assessment to accurately quantify temperature variations (at the weather station, modules, between the modules and the water surface and within the water), DO, and PAR of a FPV installed in a water supply reservoir. High-frequency monitoring sensors indicated that despite the 94.7% of radiation reduction below the FPV compared to the lake reference station, slight differences in water temperature and dissolved oxygen were found between measurements in monthly and daily averages in a system that covers less than 1% of the reservoir water surface. In addition, a microclimate due to the module warming is created between the module and water surface with temperature 12% greater than the weather station measurements. The fluctuation throughout the different time frequencies showed that the processes of the reservoirs are influenced by the FPV according to complex interactions among meteorological conditions, FPV configuration, and site-specific factors.
