Human activities have caused concerns over the contamination of trace elements in aquatic systems due to their toxicity, long-lasting nature, and ability to accumulate in living organisms. This study evaluated the spatial pattern, environmental hazard, and potential health hazard of 13 trace metals in water and sediment samples collected from the Johor River basin using multivariate statistical techniques in order to identify the impact of both natural and human-related factors on the presence of trace metals in the area. The increased levels of metals in Station S1 indicated a significant impact from municipal, domestic, and industrial waste. The Geo-accumulation Index (I_geo) values for pollution and ecological indices in the sediment of the Johor River Basin ranged from -9.44 to 6.27. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) values ranged from 0.05 to 0.18, and the Potential Ecological Risk Assessment (RI) values ranged from 2.15 to 11.18. These results indicate that the sediments in the Johor River Basin have a low risk of contamination from trace metals. The water's hazard quotient (HQ) had an average value of 0.0001, while the hazard index (HI) had an average value of 0.0003. It is important to increase stakeholders' understanding and concerns regarding the potential long-term human health and ecological implications associated with trace metals in Johor River water. The results of this study offer essential initial information for government entities to implement sustainable management strategies, reducing the likelihood of future trace metal contamination issues in the Johor River basin and similar regions. © 2024 European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences

This study evaluates the flood hazard index in Kuala Langsa Village, Langsa City, Aceh, a region prone to frequent flooding due to its low-lying coastal location in eastern Aceh. It serves as a crucial link between North Sumatra and Aceh provinces. The area's significance underscores the importance of understanding and mitigating flood risks. By utilizing the coupled 1D/2D Hydraulic model, flood hazards are accurately predicted and mapped. The field data collection (as calibration) measures the maximum tidal water level based on information from residents affected by flooding on the land surface under their houses. Hydrological conditions during the December 2017 flood event are simulated using HEC-HMS. Hydraulic conditions are evaluated using HEC-RAS 6.4.1. The research aims to assess the flood hazard index in Kuala Langsa Village under spring tide conditions, considering variations in base flow and flood flow with return periods of 2 and 50 years upstream. The main results show that an FHI >2.62 (high) covers an area of 169.74 ha, 2.62 > FHI >2.23 (moderate) encompasses 172.60 ha, and FHI <2.23 (low) accounts for 222.32 ha. During the Q50 upstream flood, there was an increase in flood extent: low by 61.20 %, medium by 25.32 %, and high by 5.57 %. These findings deepen our understanding of estuary flood mechanisms and emphasize the importance of developing more effective adaptation strategies to reduce flood risks in the future. © 2024 The Authors

The Manggarai water Gate is a measurement point strategically located to measure Jakarta's flooding magnitude that keeps increasing from year to year. The 2015s gate capacity improvement underscores this importance. This paper applies a machine learning model that utilizes an atmospheric approach to predict the Manggarai water level as output. In the process, optimization is done by comparing three spatial input sizes and performing a sensitivity analysis of the input variables. Using a simple recurrent sequence, the model can predict the water level with a coefficient of determination (R2) reaching 0.7 using 18-hour recurrent data. This study can be used as the basis for further development that can take satellite data lead time advantage that is crucial for the early warning system. © 2021 IEEE.

Human-nature relationships and its implications on the management of eastern arc water catchments of Tanzania

This study is aimed at understanding the Human–Nature Relationships (HNRs) in the Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi catchments, as parts of Eastern Arc water catchment areas, in the United Republic of Tanzania. This study employed the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Norm-Activation Model (NAM) to understand the position of humans in the two catchments’ ecosystems. The study design involved Focus Group Discussions, Key Informant Interview, and Household Questionnaire Surveys. A total of 310 (185 males and 125 females) villagers were involved in this study. Furthermore, four HRN typologies, master over nature, partner with nature, a participant in nature, and steward of nature, were adopted. The study findings indicated that there was no significant difference (X ² test, p > 0.05) in HNRs between the two catchments. Moreover, master over nature typology was dominant in both catchments, with values of 59.4% (n = 200) and 59.5% (n = 85) in Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi, respectively. The main reason is that HNR is dependent on the nature of the livelihood activities and the mode of subsistence of a particular community. It was also found that the communities in Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi catchments are mostly dependent on agricultural and hunting activities that highly depended on the two catchment resources. This study, therefore, recommends an increase in the level of community participation in all decision-making activities, as well as an increase in environmental education for sustainable utilization and management of the two catchment resources. © 2023 The Author(s). Understanding the interplay of sludge characteristics and dewatering in water treatment plants: a review

In the realm of water supply and the management of residues arising from water treatment plants (WTP), an essential challenge lies in understanding and characterising sludge, and assessing whether these characteristics impact sludge dewatering, an essential step to reduce the management costs of these wastes. This review focuses specifically on the characterisation of sludge properties relevant to dewatering performance, addressing an underexplored aspect within recent literature on water treatment plant sludge (WTS). Unlike prior studies, which predominantly focus on sludge reuse after dewatering, this review systematically examines the direct correlations and interdependencies between sludge characteristics and dewatering outcomes, addressing gaps in literature. A bibliometric analysis of global WTS research revealed an annual average of fewer than 14 publications since 1957. Keywords related to sludge characteristics are notably scarce in connection with ‘dewatering’, highlighting a specific gap that this review aims to address. This review categorises sludge characteristics into ‘micro-properties’ and ‘macro-properties’, providing detailed descriptions of each. The latter primarily influence dewatering and are generally unmeasured in WTPs due to the inherent difficulties in their determination. However, it’s possible to derive macro-properties from micro-properties, establishing their relationship and subsequently selecting an appropriate dewatering technique. Main findings underscore direct proportionality between: viscosity (micro) and capillary suction time–CST (macro), solid concentration–SC (micro) and CST;and inverse proportionality between: SC and specific resistance to filtration–SRF (macro). These findings contribute a refined understanding of parameters affecting sludge dewatering processes, supporting further research focused on enhancing efficiency in WTS management. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Heavy metals in agricultural soil in China: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Microplastics in wastewater and sludge from centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment plants: Effects of treatment systems and microplastic characteristics

Domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a vital role in limiting the release of microplastics (MP) into the environment. This study examined MP removal efficiency from five centralized and four decentralized domestic WWTPs in Bangkok, Thailand. MP concentrations in wastewater and sludge were comparable between centralized and decentralized WWTPs, despite these decentralized WWTPs serving smaller populations and having limited treatment capacity. The elimination of MPs ranged from 50 to 96.8% in centralized WWTPs and 14.2–53.6% in decentralized WWTPs. It is noted that the retained MPs concentrations in sludge ranged from 20,000 to 228,100 MP/kg dry weight. The prevalence of synthetic fibers and fragments could be attributed to their pathways from laundry or car tires, and the accidental release of a variety of plastic wastes ended up in investigated domestic WWTPs. Removal of MPs between the centralized and decentralized WWTPs was influenced by several impact factors including initial MP concentrations, longer retention times, MP fragmentation, and variations of MP concentrations in sludge leading to different activated sludge process configurations. Sewage sludge has become a primary location for the accumulation of incoming microplastics in WWTPs. The MPs entering and leaving each unit process were varied due to the unique characteristics of MPs, and their different treatment efficiencies. While the extended hydraulic retention period in decentralized WWTPs decreased the MP removal efficacy, the centralized WWTP with the two-stage activated sludge process achieved the highest MP removal efficiency. © 2024 The Authors

Alue Naga Beach and Ulee Lheue Beach are beaches located in Banda Aceh City, Aceh Province, these two beaches have a fairly large role in the fields of fisheries, transportation, and tourism. During the last few years, the population growth rate of Banda Aceh City has increased by 2% per year, this causes the volume of waste generated to be even greater, unfortunately, the municipal waste management office cannot manage it fully. Most of the untreated waste enters water bodies and has the potential to pollute the marine and coastal environment. So it is necessary to do research to provide an overview of the level of marine debris pollution on the two beaches. This study uses the transect method, the waste obtained is grouped according to size and type. The results showed that marine debris on Ulee Lheue beach was found to be more numerous and varied than marine debris on Alue Naga beach. Overall, macro waste with a size range of 2.5−1 m was the most commonly found and plastic was the waste with the highest yield with a density value of 65.8 g/m2, an abundance of 6.56 items/m2, and a percentage of 75%. © 2022
