While the importance of automatic image analysis is continuously increasing, recent meta-research revealed major flaws with respect to algorithm validation. Performance metrics are particularly key for meaningful, objective, and transparent performance assessment and validation of the used automatic algorithms, but relatively little attention has been given to the practical pitfalls when using specific metrics for a given image analysis task. These are typically related to (1) the disregard of inherent metric properties, such as the behaviour in the presence of class imbalance or small target structures, (2) the disregard of inherent data set properties, such as the non-independence of the test cases, and (3) the disregard of the actual biomedical domain interest that the metrics should reflect. This living dynamically document has the purpose to illustrate important limitations of performance metrics commonly applied in the field of image analysis. In this context, it focuses on biomedical image analysis problems that can be phrased as image-level classification, semantic segmentation, instance segmentation, or object detection task. Background: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in 2021, the proportion of the type 2 diabetes burden attributable to selected risk factors, and projections of diabetes prevalence through 2050. Methods: Estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden were computed in 204 countries and territories, across 25 age groups, for males and females separately and combined;these estimates comprised lost years of healthy life, measured in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs;defined as the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]). We used the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) approach to estimate deaths due to diabetes, incorporating 25 666 location-years of data from vital registration and verbal autopsy reports in separate total (including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) and type-specific models. Other forms of diabetes, including gestational and monogenic diabetes, were not explicitly modelled. Total and type 1 diabetes prevalence was estimated by use of a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, to analyse 1527 location-years of data from the scientific literature, survey microdata, and insurance claims;type 2 diabetes estimates were computed by subtracting type 1 diabetes from total estimates. Mortality and prevalence estimates, along with standard life expectancy and disability weights, were used to calculate YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. Due to SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) being a novel virus, there are currently no known effective antiviral drugs capable of slowing its progress. To accelerate the discovery of potential drug candidates, bioinformatics based in silico drug discovery can be applied as a very robust tool. In the present study, more than 60 antiviral drugs already available on the market, were chosen after literature survey. These can be used in clinical trials for the treatment of COVID-19. In this study, these candidate drugs were ranked based on their potential to interact with the Spike protein and RdRp (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase) of SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, the mechanism of their action as well as how the virus infection can utilize Hemoglobin to decrease the oxygen level in blood is explained. Moreover, multiple sequence alignments of the Spike protein with 75 sequences of different viruses from the Orthocoronavirinae subfamily were performed. This gives insight into the evolutionarily conserved domains that can be targeted using drug or antibody treatment. This multidimensional study opens a new layer of understanding about the most effective drug-targetable sites on the Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Enterprise engineering deals with the design of processes which aim to improve the structure and efficiency of business organizations. It develops approaches based on modeling techniques, particularly on business process modeling, to ensure the quality and the global consistency of enterprise strategies and expectations. Nowadays, risk consideration in enterprise engineering is a growing concern since the business environment is becoming more and more competitive, complex, and unpredictable. To face this concern, a paradigm named risk-aware business process management (R-BPM) has recently emerged. It seeks to integrate the two traditionally isolated fields of risk management and business process management. Despite the significant benefits that can arise from the use of R-BPM, it suffers from a lack of solid scientific foundations and dedicated tooling. This present research work contributes to bridging that gap in a twofold way: (i) by establishing the BPRIM business process-risk integrated method framework, and (ii) by designing a dedicated tool, named ADOBPRIM which supports the efficient application of the BPRIM framework. This paper first comprehensively presents the foundation of BPRIM which is based on three main components and, secondly, its dedicated tool ADOBPRIM which was designed using the ADOxx meta-modeling platform. An evaluation with a real case study in the health care domain shows the relevance of the methodological framework. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Functional connectivity (FC) analysis constitutes a fundamental neuroscientific approach that has been extensively used for the investigation of brain's connectivity and activation patterns. To that end, several software tools have been developed. This paper presents FCLAB, the only EEGLAB-based plugin, which is able to work with EEG signals in order to estimate and visualize brain functional connectivity networks based on a variety of similarity measures as well as run a complete graph analysis procedure followed by a detailed visualization of the ensuing local and global measures distribution. FCLAB entails optimization procedures for the implementation of the connectivity structures and is the result of long-term research in EEG functional connectivity. The computed functional connectivity measures have been carefully selected to reflect the state-of-art in the field. Future work focuses on extending the platform for multi-subject analysis in order to enable the implementation of statistical analysis tools. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper we present the fundamental concept, as well as, the objectives and the architecture of HarmonicSS EU project. The proposed architecture envisages to address (i) the lack of patient stratification in large patient cohorts, (ii) the dataset heterogeneity across these cohorts, and (iii) the incomplete understanding of disease pathogenesis. In order to do so, ontology matching mechanisms are recruited for harmonizing the clinical data, distributed data analytics services have been designed for the de-centralized analysis of patient data, and different health policies can be assessed, all of them with respect to the data protection guidelines posed by the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The HarmonicSS architecture has been employed towards the development of a data sharing, harmonization and distributed analytics framework for the recruitment and analysis of heterogeneous regional, national and international longitudinal cohorts of patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS). Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Magnonics is a field of science that addresses the physical properties of spin waves and utilizes them for data processing. Scalability down to atomic dimensions, operations in the GHz-to-THz frequency range, utilization of nonlinear and nonreciprocal phenomena, and compatibility with CMOS are just a few of many advantages offered by magnons. Although magnonics is still primarily positioned in the academic domain, the scientific and technological challenges of the field are being extensively investigated, and many proof-of-concept prototypes have already been realized in laboratories. This roadmap is a product of the collective work of many authors that covers versatile spin-wave computing approaches, conceptual building blocks, and underlying physical phenomena. In particular, the roadmap discusses the computation operations with Boolean digital data, unconventional approaches like neuromorphic computing, and the progress towards magnon-based quantum computing. The article is organized as a collection of sub-sections grouped into seven large thematic sections. Each sub-section is prepared by one or a group of authors and concludes with a brief description of the current challenges and the outlook of the further development of the research directions. © 2021, CC BY.
