Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. Chronic heart failure represents a global pandemic, currently affecting over 26 million of patients worldwide. It is a major contributor in the death rate of patients with cardiovascular diseases and results in more than 1 million hospitalizations annually in Europe and North America. Methods for chronic heart failure detection can be utilized to act preventive, improve early diagnosis and avoid hospitalizations or even life-threatening situations, thus highly enhance the quality of patient's life. In this paper, we present a machine-learning method for chronic heart failure detection from heart sounds. The method consists of: filtering, segmentation, feature extraction and machine learning. The method was tested with a leave-one-subject-out evaluation technique on data from 122 subjects, gathered in the study. The method achieved 96% accuracy, outperforming a majority classifier for 15 percentage points. More specifically, it detects (recalls) 87% of the chronic heart failure subjects with a precision of 87%. The study confirmed that advanced machine learning applied on real-life sounds recorded with an unobtrusive digital stethoscope can be used for chronic heart failure detection.

We present IDTxl (the Information Dynamics Toolkit xl), a new open source Python toolbox for effective network inference from multivariate time series using information theory, available from GitHub (https://***/pwollstadt/IDTxl). Information theory (Cover & Thomas, 2006;MacKay, 2003;Shannon, 1948) is the mathematical theory of information and its transmission over communication channels. Information theory provides quantitative measures of the information content of a single random variable (entropy) and of the information shared between two variables (mutual information). The defined measures build on probability theory and solely depend on the probability distributions of the variables involved. As a consequence, the dependence between two variables can be quantified as the information shared between them, without the need to explicitly model a specific type of dependence. Hence, mutual information is a model-free measure of dependence, which makes it a popular choice for the analysis of systems other than communication channels. Transfer entropy (TE) (Schreiber, 2000) is an extension of mutual information that measures the directed information transfer between time series of a source and a target variable. TE has become popular in many scientific disciplines to infer dependencies and whole networks from data. Notable application domains include neuroscience (Wibral, Vicente, & Lindner, 2014) and dynamical systems analysis (Lizier, Prokopenko, & Zomaya, 2014) (see Bossomaier, Barnett, Harré, & Lizier (2016) for an introduction to TE and a comprehensive discussion of its application). In the majority of the applications, TE is used in a bivariate fashion, where information transfer is quantified between all sourcetarget pairs. In a multivariate setting, however, such a bivariate analysis may infer spurious or redundant interactions, where multiple sources provide the same information about the target. Submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths provide a unique view of theUniverse, from the gas and dust that fills and surrounds galaxies to thechromosphere of our own Sun. Current single-dish facilities have presented atantalising view of the brightest (sub-)mm sources, and interferometers haveprovided the exquisite resolution necessary to analyse the details in smallfields, but there are still many open questions that cannot be answered withcurrent facilities. In this report we summarise the science that is guiding thedesign of the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST). Wedemonstrate how tranformational advances in topics including star formation inhigh redshift galaxies, the diffuse circumgalactic medium, Galactic ecology,cometary compositions and solar flares motivate the need for a 50m, single-dishtelescope with a 1-2 degree field of view and a new generation of highlymultiplexed continuum and spectral cameras. AtLAST will have the resolution todrastically lower the confusion limit compared to current single-dishfacilities, whilst also being able to rapidly map large areas of the sky anddetect extended, diffuse structures. Its high sensitivity and large field ofview will open up the field of submillimeter transient science by increasingthe probability of serendipitous detections. Finally, the science cases listedhere motivate the need for a highly flexible operations model capable of shortobservations of individual targets, large surveys, monitoring programmes,target of opportunity observations and coordinated observations with otherobservatories. AtLAST aims to be a sustainable, upgradeable, multipurposefacility that will deliver orders of magnitude increases in sensitivity andmapping speeds over current and planned submillimeter observatories. © 2024, CC BY.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic;characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic;and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting System (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019;293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. Forecasting has always been at the forefront of decision making and planning. The uncertainty that surrounds the future is both exciting and challenging, with individuals and organisations seeking to minimise risks and maximise utilities. The large number of forecasting applications calls for a diverse set of forecasting methods to tackle real-life challenges. This article provides a non-systematic review of the theory and the practice of forecasting. We provide an overview of a wide range of theoretical, state-of-the-art models, methods, principles, and approaches to prepare, produce, organise, and evaluate forecasts. We then demonstrate how such theoretical concepts are applied in a variety of real-life contexts. We do not claim that this review is an exhaustive list of methods and applications. However, we wish that our encyclopedic presentation will offer a point of reference for the rich work that has been undertaken over the last decades, with some key insights for the future of forecasting theory and practice. Given its encyclopedic nature, the intended mode of reading is non-linear. We offer cross-references to allow the readers to navigate through the various topics. We complement the theoretical concepts and applications covered by large lists of free or open-source software implementations and publicly-available databases. © 2020, CC BY.
