Electrooculographic (EOG) artefacts are one of the most common causes of Electroencephalogram (EEG) distortion. In this paper, we propose a method for EOG Blinking Artefacts (BAs) detection and removal from EEG. Normalized Correlation Coefficient (NCC), based on a predetermined BA template library was used for detecting the BA. Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) was applied to the contaminated region and a statistical algorithm determined which Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) correspond to the BA. The proposed method was applied in simulated EEG signals, which were contaminated with artificially created EOG BAs, increasing the Signal-to-Error Ratio (SER) of the EEG Contaminated Region (CR) by 35dB on average.

Biomedical Engineers should be prepared to adapt to existing or forecasted needs. There is a strong pressure on education, training and life long learning programs to continuously adapt their objectives in order to face new requirements and challenges. The main objective of the TEMPUS IV, CRH-BME project is to update existing curricula in the field of Biomedical engineering (BME) in order to meet recent and future developments in the area, address new emerging inter-disciplinary domains that appear as a result of the R&D progress and respond to the BME job market demands. The first step is to extensively review the curricula in the BME education field. In this paper, a proposal for a generic curriculum in the BME education is presented, in order to meet recent and future developments and respond to the demands of the BME job market. Adoption of the core program structure will facilitate harmonization of studies as well as student and staff exchange across Europe, thus promoting the European Higher Education Area.

Business intelligence is a new methodology to maximize the benefits for healthcare organization Business intelligence provides an integrated view of data that can be used to monitor, key performance indicators, identify hidden patterns in diagnosis and identify variations in cost factors. Intelligent techniques provide an effective computational methods and robust environment for business intelligence in the healthcare domain. From the technical point of view, healthcare based business intelligence systems, are complex to build, maintain and face the knowledge-acquisition difficulty. Efficiency of such systems is determined by the efficiency of the intelligent techniques and methodologies. In this paper we discusses some pros and cons of using AJAX for increasing the usability of Web applications. As AJAX allows Web applications look like desktop applications, it can increase the learnability of a Web application. Nevertheless, AJAX can also be the source of end user frustration if the XMLHttpRequest is not supported by the browser, Javascript is not available, or an Internet connection is missing. We also provide some workarounds for server response time gaps, for example by providing visible user feedback messages) and enabling the back button to work properly.

Artificial bone implants are in relatively simple shapes for use mainly by cutting or manually. To produce a desired bone shape, we used tribasic calcium phosphate bone ash powder as the material and aqueous sodium chondroitin sulfate solution as the binder in inkjet powder-layered manufacturing. In experiments, we reproduced a rabbit femur with a precision of 0.6 mm and a minimum longitudinal hollow shaft 2 mm in diameter based on computed tomography data. We gave the brittle artificial bone a compressive strength of 3 MPa by dipping it in water and binder through its hydrate reaction. © Fuji Technology Press Ltd.

Multicarrier transmission is an established technique for radio transmission systems and it can be considered as a promising approach for next generation wireless systems. In channel situations with high delay-spreads, OFDM requires large guard interval lengths which decrease the spectral efficiency significantly. Therefore, alternative multicarrier transmission systems are of great practical interest, which guarantee a reliable transmission without a guard interval. In multicarrier systems the subcarriers are weighted in a quite different way by the frequency selective channel, based on the inherent structure of the multicarrier transmission system. If the transmitter knows the channel, the subchannel's transmission parameters such as transmit power or modulation alphabets can be adapted. In this contribution, transmit power allocation schemes for BER performance improvements in a wavelet-based multicarrier transmission system with SVD equalization (singular value decomposition) are investigated under the constraints of a limited total transmit power and a given data rate. Thereby the differences between the optimal but highly complex solution and suboptimal but complexity-reduced solutions are analyzed. Numerical results are obtained by simulations assuming different time-variant channel characteristics, with delays larger than the multicarrier symbol duration.
