Characteristic modeling and the adaptive control design based on it have attracted increasing attention from the research community due to their many successful practical applications that have been reported. This paper presents a Matlab simulation platform that has been developed to facilitate the study of characteristic model based adaptive control systems. The simulation platform consists of two interweaving components: for a given continuous-time linear time-invariant plant, represented by a transfer function, and a specified sampling period, the simulation platform calculates a discretized model of the plant, and the corresponding characteristic model, and with a specified set of initial conditions of the characteristic model and its coefficients, along with the specified duration of simulation and reference input, the simulation platform will adaptively tune the coefficients of the characteristic model and calculate the outputs of the plant and the characteristic model. All the data needed for the simulation will be entered through a graphic user interface, which also plots the evolution of the outputs of the plant and the characteristic model as well as the evolution of the coefficients of the characteristic model. The simulation results can also be saved for off line plotting and analysis through the graphic user interface.

In this paper, the accuracy of soft computing technique in solar radiation prediction based on series of measured meteorological data (monthly mean sunshine duration, monthly mean maximum and minimum temperature) taking from Iseyin meteorological station in Nigeria was examined. The process, which simulates the solar radiation with support vector regression (SVR), was constructed. The inputs were monthly mean maximum temperature (Tmax), monthly mean minimum temperature (Tmin) and monthly mean sunshine duration ( $$ \bar{n} $$ ). Polynomial and radial basis functions (RBF) are applied as the SVR kernel function to estimate solar radiation. According to the results, a greater improvement in estimation accuracy can be achieved through the SVR with polynomial basis function compared to RBF. The SVR coefficient of determination R 2 with the polynomial function was 0.7395 and with the radial basis function, the R 2 was 0.5877.

In this work, a game theoretical approach for addressing the virtual network service providers (NSPs), small cell provider (SCP) and user interaction in heterogenous small cell networks is presented. In particular, we consider the users can select the services of different NSPs based on their prices. The NSPs have no dedicated hardware and need to rent from the SCP in term of radio resources, e.g., small cell base stations (SBSs) in order to provide satisfied services to the users. Due to the fact that the selfish parties involved aim at maximizing their own profits, a hierarchical dynamic game framework is presented to address interactive decision problem. In the lower-level, a Stackelberg game is formulated to model and analyze the adaptive service selection of non-atomic users. In the upper-level, the NSPs and SCP sequentially determine the leasing and pricing strategies, respectively, by taking into account the service selection in the lower-level game. Performance evaluation shows the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed game theoretic approaches.

This task force paper summarizes the state-of-the-art real-time digital simulation concepts and technologies that are used for the analysis, design, and testing of the electric power system and its apparatus. This paper highlights the main building blocks of the real-time simulator, i.e., hardware, software, input-output systems, modeling, and solution techniques, interfacing capabilities to external hardware and various applications. It covers the most commonly used real-time digital simulators in both industry and academia. A comprehensive list of the real-time simulators is provided in a tabular review. The objective of this paper is to summarize salient features of various real-time simulators, so that the reader can benefit from understanding the relevant technologies and their applications, which will be presented in a separate paper. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization formulation to design a hybrid wind-photovoltaic-storage system to supply the demand. This design problem aims to minimize the annual cost of the overall system as well as the CO2 emissions, and is solved by Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm. Solar irradiation, wind speed, and load data are assumed deterministic. Prices are all empirical and components of hybrid system are commercially available. A test system in the Northwestern Iran is investigated. The presented technique yields the optimal number of system devices such that the economic and environmental profits are maximized. A fuzzy decision making (FDM) method is applied for finding the best compromise solution from the set of Pareto-optimal solutions obtained by ABC.

This paper studies the containment and group dispersion control for a multi-robot system in the presence of dynamic leaders. Each robot is represented by a doubleintegrator dynamic model and a distributed control algorithm is developed to drive the multi-robot system to follow a group of dynamic leaders with containment and group dispersion behaviors. The effectiveness of the algorithm is then verified on a multi-robot control platform.

In general, power converters are operated in closed-loop systems, and any characteristic variations in one component will simultaneously alter the operating point of other components, resulting in a shift in overall reliability profile. This interdependence makes the reliability of a converter a complex function of time and operating conditions;therefore, the application may demand periodic replacement of converters to avoid downtime and maintenance cost. By knowing the present state of health and the remaining life of a power converter, it is possible to reduce the maintenance cost for expensive high-power converters. This paper presents a reliability analysis for a boost converter, although this method could be used to any power converter being operated using closed-loop controls. Through the conducted study, it is revealed that the reliability of a boost converter having control loops degrades with time, and this paper presents a method to calculate time-varying reliability of a boost converter as a function of characteristic variations in different components in the circuit. In addition, the effects of operating and ambient conditions have been included in the reliability model as well. It was found that any increase in the ON-state resistance of the MOSFET or equivalent series resistance of the output capacitor decreases the overall reliability of the converter. However, any variation in the capacitance has a more complex impact on the converter's reliability. This paper is a step forward to the power-converter reliability analysis because the cumulative effect of multiple degraded components has been considered in the reliability model. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

An Integrated Cyber-Physical Simulation Environment for Smart Grid Applications

The concept of Cyber-Physical systems （CPSs）, which combine computation, networking, and physical processes, is considered to be beneficial to smart grid applications. This study presents an integrated simulation environment to provide a unified platform for the investigation of smart grid applications involving power grid monitoring, communication, and control. In contrast to the existing approaches, this environment allows the network simulator to operate independently, importing its results to the power system simulation. This resolves conflicts between discrete event simulation and continuous simulation. In addition, several data compensation methods are proposed and investigated under different network delay conditions. A case study of wide-area monitoring and control is provided, and the efficiency of the proposed simulation framework has been evaluated based on the experimental results.
