The Stabilization of Coordinated Distributed Model Predictive Control *

A stabilized Distributed MPC for large scale system is proposed and its designation is given in this paper for improving the global performance of closed-loop system. To make the performance of closed-loop system more close to that using centralized MPC, each subsystem-based MPC added the cost of the entire system into its optimization cost function. In addition, a consistency constraint and dual mode strategy are designed and adopted. Provided an initially feasible solution can be found, subsequent feasibility of the algorithm is guaranteed at every update, and the asymptotic stabilization is established.

Prediction of hard rock TBM penetration rate using least square support vector machine

The prediction of tunnel boring machine (TBM) penetration rate is helpful to plan construction time and to control cost. This paper studies on modeling the penetration rate and the rock mass parameters via least square support vector machine (LS-SVM). These rock properties include uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), peak slope index (PSI), distance between planes of weakness (DPW) and the alpha angle. The correlation between the rock parameters and the measured rate of penetration (ROP) is first investigated via LS-SVM. Then the necessity of normalizing the rock parameters is discussed. Finally, comparisons between the LS-SVM and other methods are presented to demonstrate the applicability of LS-SVM for predicting ROP.

This paper investigates variation of infinite horizon (IH) performance of Model Predictive Control (MPC) without constraints as the optimization horizon changes. By exploring properties of the Difference Riccati Equations (DRE), an upper bound and a lower bound of the ratio between variation of IH performance of MPC and finite horizon (FH) optimal cost are obtained. The result shows the dynamic behavior of IH performance of closed-loop MPC systems as the optimization horizon varies.

Congestion is a condition in power systems operation in which some transmission lines become fully loaded. This problem intervene considerable amount of extra cost and increase burdens of power market participants. To alleviate congestion, the operator of power system pays participants to modify their active power generation or consumer side demand. This change in operating point would put the power system in the peril and the stability margins would drop because of the increase in participation of critical generators and load demand. Considering security margins as secondary function could maintain power system from instability points by restraining participation of generators and demands. In this paper a multi-objective version of particle swarm optimization is employed to find Pareto solutions of novel secure congestion management in which congestion management cost and Corrected Transient Energy Margin are considered as two competing objective functions. The proposed method has been tested on the New-England power system to validate the efficacy of proposed method. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper considers anti-windup design for linear systems subject to actuator *** anti-windup gains are designed for activations immediately at the occurrence actuator saturation,after the saturation has reached a certain level and in anticipation of the occurrence of saturation,*** design is based on the minimization of L 2 gain from the disturbance to the controlled output of the resulting closed-loop *** anti-windup scheme involves a single anti-windup loop for immediate activation.A recent innovation is to design a single anti-windup loop for delayed or anticipatory activation,as well as to design two anti-windup gains,one for immediate activation and one for delayed *** design of three anti-windup gains for three different activations is shown through simulation to lead to significant further performance improvement over the previous activation schemes.

A new online measurement and analysis method has been presented in this paper to identify the state of health of power converter circuits. Using spread spectrum time domain reflectometry (SSTDR), impedance in the various current paths inside the converter as well as any fault can be identified without interrupting the circuit's normal operation. Multiple sets of test data have been generated while the SSTDR process is applied to each of the components i.e. the power MOSFETs, the dc bus capacitor and the load. These obtained test data are analyzed to show how these test results are consistent with the impedances in various current paths. An impedance matrix was formed for a non-aged converter and a corresponding matrix using SSTDR data was formed as well. The matrices could be formed for any power converter, and the impedance matrix for the non-aged converter could be considered as a “Reference matrix” for comparison purpose. By comparing these two matrices, the variation in path impedances due to aging could be determined. This research aims to identify the measurable quantities to characterize the aging process, their origins of these quantities and propose convenient methods to measure them.

The multilevel modular capacitor clamped converter (MMCCC) topology overcomes the difficulties of the multilevel switched capacitor (SC) based dc-to-dc converters in high conversion ratio applications. MMCCC is completely modular and has many other advantageous features. Like most other SC converters, MMCCC suffers from limited voltage regulation. The conversion ratio of an ideal MMCCC converter in step-up mode is an integer, and this integer conversion ratio depends on the number of active modules. The maximum conversion ratio in step-up configuration for a k-module MMCCC is (k+1). It has already been shown in literature that different integer CRs can be achieved by changing the number of active modules of an MMCCC. Achieving voltage regulation by lowering the operating frequency is another well known technique for switched capacitor converters. However, the output voltage ripple increases in inverse proportion of the frequency. In this paper, a new switching scheme is proposed for MMCCC to achieve continuously variable CRs. The proposed switching scheme requires introducing a small inductor in each module of the MMCCC without altering the modular structure of the converter. This additional inductor can be realized using the stray inductance distributed in the circuit or small external inductors. It has been shown that continuous CR variation with lower output ripple can be achieved without lowering the operating frequency of the converter. This proposed method introduces another degree of freedom in order to achieve variable CR using MMCCC. Simulation results and experimental results obtained from an MMCCC prototype have been used to validate the new control scheme.

Epoxy used as insulating material in electronic and electrical devices plays an important role in system reliability. Addition of nanoparticles into epoxy can improve the insulating properties compared with undoped material. However, due to the change of the material structure, trap characteristics and charge behaviors are altered as a consequence. This possibly leads to a great risk of electric field distortion and discharge that degrades the insulation. From the viewpoint of safety, it is necessary to investigate the charge behavior on epoxy nanocomposites. This paper presents study aimed at clarifying the effect of nano-filler content on surface charge accumulation and decay behaviors of epoxy nanocomposites with SiO 2 particles. Samples were prepared by dispersing nano-scale SiO 2 into epoxy by mixing with shear force. Corona charging tests were performed at room temperature with a relative humidity of ~ 40%. The charge distribution was measured by means of an electrostatic voltmeter. Obtained results show the dependence of the accumulated charge as well as the charge decay rate upon the concentration of SiO 2 , varying as a function of the charge polarity, charging time and charging voltage. It is suggested that the charge dynamics is dependent upon the characteristics of localized surface states that are altered by the nanoparticles.

power converters constructed from discrete components are difficult to mass produce, and the installation involves a significant labor cost to have the proper interconnection among the panel, inverter and the grid. These facts indicate that the present PV technology may not be able to address the challenges involved in reaching the DOE target of $1/W. Therefore, a paradigm shift in the design of the entire PV power system is needed to reach this goal. In order to increase the converter reliability and watts/$, the active and passive elements of a power converter (especially capacitors and active switches such as MOSFETs, JFETs or IGBTs) could be embedded on the same substrate material used for fabricating the p-n junctions in the photovoltaic panel. To the knowledge of the author, there is no prior work in cell level power conversion, and therefore, this project idea could be considered as an “Out of the box” kind. A novel fabrication process is proposed in this paper demonstrating the integration of PV cells and two major components needed to build a power converter. Because of the cell level power conversion, PV panels constructed from these cells are likely to be immune to partial shading and hot-spot effects. The end goal of this research is to produce 120V/240V ac output directly from the panel. An extremely accurate device simulator (*Silvaco Athena/Atlas) was used to generate reasonably accurate characteristics of the proposed PV system.

Demand Response is playing an increasingly important role in smart grid control strategies. Modeling the dynamical behavior of a large population of appliances under demand response is especially important to evaluate the effectiveness of various demand response programs. In this paper an aggregate model is proposed for a class of second-order Thermostatically Controlled Loads (TCLs). The model efficiently includes statistical information of the population, systematically deals with heterogeneity, and accounts for a second-order effect necessary to accurately capture the transient dynamics in the collective response. A good performance of the model however requires a high state dimension which dramatically complicates its formal analysis and controller design. To address this issue, a model reduction approach is developed for the proposed aggregate model, which can significantly reduce its complexity with small performance loss. The original and the reduced-order aggregate models are validated against simulations of thousands of detailed building models using GridLAB-D (an open-source distribution simulation software). The results indicate that the reduced-order model can accurately reproduce the steady-state and transient dynamics generated by GridLAB-D simulations with a much reduced complexity.
